To HATE background noise of sport on tv.

This is causing major issues with me and my husband.
We've been together for 12 years and I swear it's getting worse. Every room he walks into he puts sport on. Cricket, football, darts, tennis, horse racing, cars, snooker. Any sport, he's not fussy. If I'm trying to relax on the sofa scrolling through stuff on my phone, or lying on the bed, or sitting in the kitchen he will walk in the room and the first thing he does is stick sport on.
I find the noise really overwhelming. Commentating, cheering, fans chanting, general sport noises, eg hitting a ball.
Half the time I think he puts it on just so the room isn't silent. But I LOVE silence! He says I'm being controlling telling him what he can and can't watch, but it's become like habit for him to walk into a room and grab a remote control. Any suggestions?

All I can think of is headphones for one or other of you, but sympathy - it sounds like a nightmare.

One of the reasons I like having my flat to myself is being in control of the noise levels. When I go to stay with people I always have to get my head round the TV noise and conversations happening at the same time.

branvan5000 · 30/05/2024 21:23

I've even suggested him turning it down low, but he argues he can't hear it. It's really grating on me now. I feel physical anger when I see him walking into the room where I'm sat as I know he's going to turn it on. When he works away and I'm home alone I'll go all week with no tv. I'll have radio in the background, but not tv.

That sounds dreadful
You shouldn't have to but maybe get some ear plugs?

Tangled123 · 30/05/2024 21:28

I feel your pain, OP! I grew up in a house where football was on constantly. I can’t stand the sound of it now. The crowd noises and commentary do my head in.
I wish I could say my house now is better but my husband is a gamer, so gunshot gaming noises are very common, with the common annoyed shouts thrown in too.
I try zoning out as much as possible, using white noise when it’s really annoying, but I love working from home when he’s not here just for some quiet.

PorkPieForStarters · 30/05/2024 21:31

Yes I'm the same, for some reason those noises really put me on edge and I have an almost physical reaction which then either becomes rage or a need to flee!!

I've been looking at those Loop earplugs that apparently block annoying sound while still letting you hear people speaking etc.

GreenPhlem · 30/05/2024 21:31

DH and I are similar, he likes noise and light. I like darkness and silence.

First thing he does when he gets up is open all the blinds and sticks radio 6 on. Drives me mad. I’d draw the line at sport though, I actually find sport commentary depressing and I couldn’t live with that. Genuinely i would divorce over it.

branvan5000 · 30/05/2024 21:32

I think after 12 years of crowd and commentary noises I've finally reached the end of my tether!!! I have a really vocal job too and spend 8 hours a day talking to colleagues and members of the public. Then I come home and have kids chewing my ear off. After 8pm I really really crave silence!

YANBU. It really changes the atmosphere to fill it with the voices of men who've been selected and trained to enthusiastically go on and on without stopping even when there's nothing to say.
You aren't being controlling to object to it; the pain is real.

ragdoll12345 · 30/05/2024 21:54

Yes I feel the same. Fortunately my DH rarely watches sport so I am lucky. Really wouldnt cope with living with someone who is sport obsessed.

grinandslothit · 30/05/2024 21:56

He needs to wear some earbuds or headphones of some type so he's not annoying everybody else in the house with his noise.

Meadowfinch · 30/05/2024 21:58

Hide the remote. 😀

Preprogram it to classic fm 🙂

Retreat to your bedroom and lock the door or use a door wedge to stop him coming in. 😁

Leave !!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/05/2024 21:58

I see your non-stop sport and raise you.......non-stop CNN (with particular excitement over the Trump trial). 🙄

branvan5000 · 30/05/2024 21:59

I think I'd take CNN right now!!!

My husband is similar with putting music on. He does it even when he is in the shower. I'm hard of hearing and oversensitive to noise. Dealing with the kids constantly talking, screaming and then him putting music on sends me off the chart with sensory overload. I honestly think I need a padded sound insulated room that I can hide in to escape it all.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/05/2024 22:02

Actually some sport I don't mind. Some cricket commentary can be VERRRY relaxing. Spent years falling asleep in the afternoon to Michael Holding's lovely West Indian lilt.

Snooker can be relaxing in the background too. One of the ones which most pisses me off is the bloody darts. And Formula 1. Sets me nerves on edge.

But if he’s that much of a selfish bugger he’ll probably refuse!

PattyDuckface · 30/05/2024 22:18

I find it quite relaxing, it's so boring it's soporific.

However if it riles you get some good noise cancelling headphones

ThereIsIron · 30/05/2024 22:19

Why don't you have your "own" room without a TV?

DrStrangesSmarterSister · 30/05/2024 22:25

I also grew up in a house where football was often watched; I really can't stand it now.

NewName24 · 30/05/2024 22:47

Well, neither of you ABU, you are just different.

You'll have to work out a compromise. I'd suggest only having TV in one room (living room would be normal) then you have , what 5?, other rooms you can choose from when you need silence.

This is me - found this thread googling "can't stand tv football sound"! Really puts me on edge. DW loves football and we're in the midst of the Euros atm
