Kids birthday party etiquette

Bit of background:

I met a mum at a baby group about a year ago, turned out we have 2 older children roughly the same age so have had a handful of play dates with the kids. The mum has met my husband a couple of times when we bumped into each other at the park, I’ve met her husband briefly once. We have no other friends in common

shes just text saying they’re throwing a party for their son, at home in the garden.

is it just me that should attended or should my DH come along? For all school parties most dads come along but would you find it weird in this circumstance?

aibu to bring dh - to help with our 3 young kids and properly meet my friend and her dh?

If it's just a kids party only one parent usually drops off.
How is the child?

2dogsandabudgie · 30/05/2024 18:16

It depends on how old the children are. Once mine got to 6 I just dropped them off as did other parents. If still pre-school I would think just one parent in attendance.

pre school age birthday child but all 3 of mine were invited, my youngest is 18 months

In that case I think it's fine for you and your husband to go.

MummyDummyNow · 30/05/2024 18:20

It's a tricky one, probably best to just ask the Mum who invited you.

Overthebow · 30/05/2024 18:20

You f all 3 kids are invited I’d bring DH too. I’d assume just one parent if it’s one kid invited but siblings too is more of a family thing

DNAwrangler · 30/05/2024 18:23

Best ask her…

POTC · 30/05/2024 18:25

I'd just reply saying that it sounds lovely and would it be okay for both of you to come

Cleo2628 · 30/05/2024 18:41

Feel a bit awkward asking (feel like she’d feel she had to say yes!) but I could do

Just ask her 'ho looking forward to little Billy's party, do you mind if Dave tags along with me? if you're tight for space don't worry I'm sure he'll enjoy the peace and quiet'

Yes, this. Bright and breezy.

Although I would recommend you don't call her a 'ho'. 😝

PurpleBugz · 30/05/2024 21:31

I would ask personally. Parties I've been to for children it's usually just one parent who comes along. You could phrase it that dh can lend a helping hand

starsinyourpies · 30/05/2024 21:32

Are you sure all three kids are invited?

WimpoleHat · 30/05/2024 21:34

Can you text back along the lines of “Oh - lovely! A “party” party, or a kids’ party? Was wondering whether to bring Dave or not!”.

PrincessTeaSet · 30/05/2024 21:38

I would take your husband if you want. It's normal for both parents to go to pre school parties. Sometimes the husband will stay for a bit then go or turn up halfway through after walking the dog or something. Minding 3 kids single handed will be stressful anyway. Easier if he comes

SparkyBlue · 30/05/2024 21:46

Just ask in a breezy way like the suggestion made earlier. I wouldn't think it would be a problem at all. If all the DC are invited then I can't see why it would be a problem

Goldbar · 31/05/2024 00:11

If you're bringing three children including an 18 month old, it seems very sensible to me to bring another adult for back-up.
