To hate the word "spenny"

SpeedyBoarding · 30/05/2024 16:36

"I have a great hand cream, it's a little bit spenny, but totally worth it."

It makes me cringe. Especially when prefaced with "a little bit".

Not sure why I hate it so much. Possibly because people who use it always buy the thing anyway - and it's usually in reference to a luxury item. Normally the thing is pretty darn expensive for what it is (£100 face cream). It conjures up a certain image in my mind: Someone who thinks they're posher than they are. They have to tell everyone how expensive everything is they have bought.

  • Was my council tax bill or rent "a little bit spenny" this year? No.
  • Is my Soho House membership, or a dinner at Nobu, that I'm telling you (bragging) about "a little bit spenny"? Yes.

Ah I quite like it.
Doesn't suit me so I don't use it but I know loads who do. Definitely not "brain dead" or "idiots".

Moier · 31/05/2024 12:02

🤣🤣🤣 ??? That's a new word for me.
Never ever heard of it .
Just messaged some friends and family members.. they haven't either .
Must be a County word?
Here in Yorkshire we have our own lol.

RuthW · 31/05/2024 12:15

Never heard of it

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 31/05/2024 12:15

'Pricey' is the kind of word that they always use in Take A Break tips e.g. "Don't waste money on pricey cotton buds when cleaning out your ears - simply cut dried spaghetti into three-inch lengths and dip the ends in melted toffee."

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 31/05/2024 12:23

Don't you just all go round saying "By 'eck, 'OW much?!?!" Grin

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 31/05/2024 12:31

This thread is the first time I've ever heard of it.

thecatsthecats · 31/05/2024 12:35

I've heard people use it exactly as OP describes. Worst, it was for a hen do described as "a bit spenny".

Grim.

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/05/2024 12:35

It's common with younger generation - DS and his university mates all say it. The kids I teach say it. It's just a new word like we had 'chinny' - I bet our parents hated that!

Language evolves

mouse70 · 31/05/2024 12:38

A new word NOT to add to my vocabulary.

Aw, I've not seen a Take a Break for at least the last decade, but my favourite ever Readers Tip came from a lady who had fashioned a pair of waterproof pants out of carrier bags so that her dear "hubby" could continue to swim in the sea on their hollibobs despite being struck down by gastroenteritis.

The top tip came complete with a photo of hubby stood in the ocean with a couple of Somerfield carriers wrapped round his arse cheeks!

I have only heard it as part of a place name - Spennymoor in Co Durham. I have never been there but now wondering if it is particularly expensive to visit! Not a fan of yoof speak - I suspect in 10 years' time there will be terrible communication issues between the various generations if this sort of thing goes on being acceptable. Heaven help overseas visitors. They must get even more confused than the rest of us.

Spenny isn't particularly spenny.

Toooldforthis36 · 31/05/2024 13:26

Hate it. Often used by people who ‘love a bit of sparkle’

Euw, grim!

Some of the tips in Take A Break, That's Life and all the rest are often not that different from the spoof ones in Viz!

I don't know how many of them are sent in seriously and how many are just people having a laugh to bag themselves twenty quid?!

Misthios · 31/05/2024 14:13

It's spendy. Not "spenny".

longdistanceclaraclara · 31/05/2024 14:15

Hate it, along with spends.

Floralnomad · 31/05/2024 14:16

Never heard it being used or seen it written

Ever since I saw an old Time-Team-style sketch on Dead Ringers, years ago now, where they were featuring unexplained mysteries - and they found an abandoned used condom in a beauty spot car park and declared that they had unearthed an ancient 'pixie bag full of sparkle' - I've never been able to hear the word 'sparkle' in the same light ever again Grin

Nope, it's both. Short for expensive.

Spenny is more common where I am

guineverehadgreeneyes · 31/05/2024 14:58

I've never heard anyone use the word "spenny" - only "spendy".

I can confirm that while on a quiet night shift, myself and colleagues did indeed make up fake handy hints, and even got one in. It concerned using a salad spinner to dry underwear if you ended up staying at somebody's house unexpectedly. I hope nobody was daft enough to try it.

NamechangeMay24 · 31/05/2024 17:39

Spenny is indeed awful. Right up there with ‘vacay’ which Mumsnet are currently torturing us with via one of the ‘promoted by Mumsnet’ ad threads.

sophi1995 · 31/05/2024 17:41

Never heard of this word before, only clicked into the thread to see what on earth it was.

It is a bit annoying alright..... hopefully this is the last that I'll hear of it...

lalaloopyhead · 31/05/2024 17:49

I've never heard of it...i'd feel slightly better about it if spelt Xpeni but that might add pronunciation problems....

🤣🤣 at buccy spayds
