Half Term Clubs Safety etc

Am I being over cautious by asking to physically see things like a DBS for those looking after my kids at clubs during half term?

Do other people ask this? Feels awkward like I'm the only one doing it. Do people just assume they've got one and/or trust them if they say they do?

Or do I need to go further and ask for more stuff, if so what?

Or am I just paranoid

I would personally be more interested on whether they have 1st aid training but would only use providers I feel I can trust and would not ask to see any certificates.

You can't ask someone for this information. You can check the companies policy, which may say something like 'all of our staff are dbs checked' but you cannot ask to see individuals.
I understand many awful things seem to be highlighted in the news which happened in childcare, but people can have a clear DBS and still commit horrendous crimes.

You can ask things like
"Are all your staff/ volunteers DBS checked?"
"What safeguarding measures are in place?" (and to see the safeguarding policy or the risk assessment if you'd like)
"What's your policy on staff with criminal records?"

You cannot demand to see the individuals staffs DBS certificates, as they contain other personal information which you've got no right to see. The organisations also don't always get a copy, and some won't ask to physically see the certificates, and they aren't stored on site, but retained by the individual who holds them. The organisations usually get informed of something akin to 'This DBS check has come back clean, nothing found' or 'This DBS check has been returned with information on, please ask the holder to see it for further details', so they can confidently say 'This person has a clean DBS' without seeing the certificate.

If you've got concerns about an individual member of staff (eg you've heard a that Joe Bloggs shouldn't be allowed to work with kids, but might be a member of staff there), you should highlight this, in writing to whoever runs the club, and they should either look into this or provide you with reassurance that this has already been checked.
