Some horrible teenager has given my address to get out of paying for a train ticket

A have got a letter from the train company telling me that my son, whom I’ve never heard of, tried to dodge a ticket and now I need to pay for it. I want to ring them and tell them what’s happened but partner says we shouldn’t engage and should just write return to sender not at this address on the letter. Says if we appeal the fine that’s sort of like saying it’s our fine.

What would be the least ridiculous way to deal with this stupid situation 🙄

Speaking from experience (bought a flat where previous owner had left masses of debts), ‘Return to Sender doesn’t work! Nor does ‘Not/no longer at this address’.

You need to give a proper explanation.

Could be a scàm. don't ring

It doesn’t come from the train company if legit. It comes from the transport police.

The thread was started in May, so I'm guessing it's all done and dusted by now.

OP there's a lot of bad advice on this thread. The most sensible suggestion was to go to Rail Forums and post there, where people actually know something about how the rail industry works and will give you accurate advice.

Ah just saw the date. Oh well if someone else has something like this - go to the Rail Forums website - they have a specific section for disputes and prosecutions.
