to ask for your holiday recommendations for september?

Not sure where else to ask this!
Need recommendations for a week's holiday in September for two women. me (f, early 40s) and DM (f, early 70s). We both like different things which is the problem!
I like heat, history and scenery. DM hates history and culture, finds it boring.
DM likes cakes, food, shopping. I hate shopping and rain and like familiar food.
Neither of us are sporty / fit.
We are terrible with directions so looking ideally for a safe place where we won't get lost and maybe a package holiday where transfers etc are all provided.
I'm sick of Spain. I love Italy but going already this year. We both dislike France.
DM doesn't want to do long haul and wants direct flights (we are in Scotland).
Please give us suggestions. Ideally around £2000-2500 max for us both.

Croatia? Dubrovnik would be lovely in September?

TheChosenTwo · 29/05/2024 22:24

No idea if this would be your thing but could you fly somewhere and cruise? Never done one myself but you could have historical tours of cities and your mum could do some shopping, plenty of cake onboard too I would imagine.
Also mostly you could organise group tours so you didn’t need to worry about getting lost!
Could do a med cruise, weather will still be lovely that time of year but I reckon the ship would have aircon!

We are off to Dalyan in Turkey early September - you can do architectural ruins, deserted cities, boat trips, shopping and plenty of food n drink options
Another option for me would be Majorca - stay in Palma n do lots of excursions plus shopping - food to suit anyone

Mabel222 · 29/05/2024 22:26

Malta

motheronthedancefloor · 29/05/2024 22:27

We did discuss a cruise but with the added extras it would be more than we'd like to spend.

Cyprus - has everything both of you want , and so much more .

cherryassam · 29/05/2024 22:30

I also think a cruise might be a good option - you can eat as safe a food as you want, and your mum could be more adventurous. Lots of cake definitely. You could do excursions if you wanted. If you’d be happy flying, Marella is good value.

Are you happy sharing a room or do you need two single occupancies?

Malta is also a good shout.

Croatia is gorgeous too.

The Algarve maybe would suit, but it depends a little what your mum would actually like doing day to day.

Would you want to spend time together every day or split up and do different things?

cherryassam · 29/05/2024 22:31

Yes Cyprus is also a great shout - Paphos has a good mix of things and some great culture.

SabrinaThwaite · 29/05/2024 22:31

Lisbon.

Indigobird111 · 29/05/2024 22:33

Sicily

Yiayoula · 29/05/2024 22:37

Easyjet fly into Paphos from Edinburgh, and into Larnaca from Glasgow.

mightydolphin · 29/05/2024 22:39

Berlin - history for you, shopping for your DM? It won't be cold in September and it's an easy city to navigate. They also have nice pastries but the food is generally similar to UK food.

itsallabitofamystery · 29/05/2024 22:52

Paphos. Lots of history/scenery. Also lovely bars/cafes. They also drive on the same side as the UK, so hire a car and get exploring. You can go down to the more lovely Protarus in just over 2 hours, passing many many beautiful beaches along the way.

SweetChilliGirl · 30/05/2024 09:04

Vienna. Lots of history and good cakes.

cheapskatemum · 30/05/2024 10:01

Cornwall is lovely in September DM can shop in towns: Penzance & Falmouth are just 2 examples, while you visit museums, mines etc. There's the Minack theatre & the Eden centre, plus lovely coastal walks, famous cream teas.

Bjorkdidit · 30/05/2024 10:08

I was also going to say Berlin or Vienna. You could even do both and travel between them by train, if you don't want to spend a whole week in one city. Or swap one of them for Prague if you don't want the long train journey.

The advantage of a city break is that you don't need an organised transfer because there will be a bus or train into the city. Have a look at Jet2citybreaks, who have packages from Glasgow and Edinburgh, but you might find it cheaper and/or more accommodation choices to book independently - look at Skyscanner and booking.com
