I know I'm not being unreasonable I just want traffic lol. I got home fro. The hospital after an operation which had gone wonderfully well. I felt cosy and warm and my husband tucked me in bed then ordered me fish and chips. I don't know if it was being sleepy post anaesthetic, feeling relaxed because the op was over, that I'd been fasting before the op ( although the nurse was so lovely and gave me loads and loads of biscuits and tea before I came home ) or that for once I knew I could justify eating a takeaway in bed which I'd usually never do and didn't have to move ( husband had also cleaned our flat we were in at the time and lit some candles etc ) but it was truly one of the best meals I've ever had. I wolfed it down. I remember finishing my chips and shutting my eyes with Sex In The City on and realising how simple life's pleasures are lol.

What's the best meal you've ever had?

We live near a very dated and old fashioned country hotel, the owner is in her late 80s but still going. Don't think it's been updated or decorated since 1980 but the food there is always amazing. We went last week for our wedding anniversary and I had a heritage tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella and basil oil for starters. It was absolutely divine, just tasted of summer. I wanted to lick the plate!

A burrito at a festival 14 years ago. It was glorious. I was drunk and not eating much there because I was young and poor but still! It was beautiful.

Special mention goes to the chips we once got on the way back from the science museum when I was a kid with my dad. I don't know what was in the chips that day but.... chef's kiss.

Bonjovispjs · 01/07/2024 20:12

Skaus croquettes at a German restaurant in Liverpool. Most amazing things I've ever tasted.

Staplerandstappler · 01/07/2024 20:17

L’Enclume, Cartmel - whole meal.

Whitebait from a small restaurant by the sea in Biarritz about 15 years ago.

Fish and chips from a cafe at the North end of Blackpool in 2002 - truly spot on.

The raspberry souffle at Le Manoir (Raymond Blancs) restaurant is by a millions miles the best thing I have ever put in my mouth 😋

Have you tried Raymond's coq?

Crab nachos at The Four Seasons in Mexico City.
Lobster rolls with skin-on fries at The Little Apple in Le Marais.
Giant ‘everything’ sandwich at Miam Miam Chez Alain in Le Marais.
Paella in a tiny back street restaurant in Pollença, Mallorca.
Any time I’ve ever eaten at The Pipe and Glass in Yorkshire. They have oysters at the moment and they are perfection.

muddyford · 01/07/2024 20:27

Scallops in a champagne sauce, cooked by a pupil of Rick Stein.

A vegan curry from a van at a university open day. And I’m not even vegan, just tasted my daughter’s then dove into the queue.

That or the Fat Duck tasting menu with matched wines which was spectacular but rather more expensive.

We rented a small place in a beautiful village in France. It was on the side of a gorge. We got friendly with the people who owned the house and they invited us over to drinks with the man who lived in the tower on the other side of the gorge. Some other people were there from a commune that grew all their own organic vegetables. I was given half a tomato with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and herbs. That was the best thing I have ever tasted.

Starlightstarbright3 · 01/07/2024 20:30

Not necessarily a meal but I had hyperemisis during my pregnancy .

After giving birth I had a cup of tea and toast . It was so weird that I knew it would stay down . I hadn’t had a cuppa in about 8 months

BobbyBiscuits · 01/07/2024 20:31

There were a couple of things I had I Spain that were amazing. One was very simple fried big sardines, the other was pork cooked in loads of salt, like baked in it. It was so tender and tasty I was in heaven! That an octopus and potato stew I had on my first ever holiday on a plane to Greece, aged 19.
I think it's to do with the weather and food in other countries being nicer though!

UghFletcher · 01/07/2024 20:32

Fillet steak at a restaurant called MeatEater in Prague... oh my days. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a steak so much before. Had it medium rare and it melted like butter.

That or my nans cheese & potato pie and the recipe is long lost now 😭

I'm obviously very immature but I'm dying with laughter at this.

My favourite meal was a stew I made the other day. It was my best yet.

allaboardtheplaybus · 01/07/2024 20:36

A spit roast chicken eaten with my fingers from a little beach side shop in Spain.

AliTheMinx · 01/07/2024 20:36

Fish snd chips about a week after my tonsillectomy. I had barely been eating, but woke up that day with an appetite and had drenched them in salt and vinegar and it was heavenly!

Moules frites in a little backstreet restaurant in Brussels with crusty bread - amazing!

A superb steak in Florence, whilst on honeymoon. So succulent and beautifully cooked.

Mixed chicken and seafood paella in Portopetro, Mallorca. The flavours were sensational and the freshness of the seafood was incredible.

hari27 · 01/07/2024 20:37

About 20 years ago pate in filo pastry with a salad and possibly Cumberland sauce. I’ve tried many times to replicate it and cannot describe how good it was.

AliTheMinx · 01/07/2024 20:38

Also some giant anchovies in a Spanish tapas bar in Bath!

flipflopsandsun · 01/07/2024 20:39

Two that spring to mind..

A fish pie, I had this at a hotel I stayed at in Jura, Scotland.

The pancakes at this hotel were also delicious.

Can't remember the name of the restaurant but somewhere in Kent, Lamb Cutlets.

GoingOutShoes · 01/07/2024 20:40

My DH's bacon and egg sarnies made with his own home made bread, 4 rashers of back bacon and two fried eggs.

I'll never have it again because I'm vegan now and he's in a dementia home. He made the best meals ever. He said he added love as a secret ingredient, which made all the difference.

Hibernatalie · 01/07/2024 20:44

After I gave birth to my first. I'd been in labour 19 hours and hadn't eaten in many many more. I tried to eat in early labour but vomitted it up. The midwife brought me bread and jam and a cup of tea and it was the best thing I've ever tasted.

Lindy2 · 01/07/2024 20:47

I've a few that have been really memorable.

A seafood risotto as a starter at a conference in a hotel in London. I can't remember which hotel it was though. The risotto was amazing. So creamy and full of flavour. I was sad it was just starter size - I would have so happily had it as my main course too.

Calamari at a Greek restaurant owned by some friends. The calamari was always so amazing. They have retired now. ☹️

Baked beans and oven chips cooked by my husband for me when I was just starting to recover from Covid. I'd had days and days of no appetite at all. He made me a little portion of beans at chips and I managed to eat it all and i enjoyed every mouthfull. It was exactly what I needed at that time.

Tlolljs · 01/07/2024 20:48

I forgot tea and toast after labour definitely up there.
cheesy mash at the Eden project.

Lokshen · 01/07/2024 20:53

Wood fire restaurant in a castle ruin on top of a Spanish hill. A very well hung steak topped with chargrilled foie gras (don't judge me, different times). Just amazing. I suspect the steak was actually a little too well hung as I was then ill for days, but I would still eat it again. Totally worth it

🙄😂

MissBattleaxe · 01/07/2024 20:58

Steak fries in Angouleme. There was a Roquefort sauce and the most perfect garlicky green beans. 15 years ago and I've never forgotten it.
