Last hair appointment before baby is due

I know I know there are more important things out there. I've had plenty of pregnancy misery so far and this is meant to be light hearted. I have dark hair naturally, but normally balayage it blonde, I love it like this. Tried to go darker last year, it looked great except it showed ALL the greys and it turns out I have quite a few already. BUT the balayage appointments are easily 3-4 hours long. I have an appointment 6 weeks before baby is due. Plan was to add more blonde as usual.

There is no way I can maintain this after baby comes, is there?

Between breastfeeding and having to go back to work at 6 months, I cannot envisage having the time for 4 hr appointments for, I don't know, years??

So what should I ask my hairdresser to do? Just a dark root gloss maybe so the hair blends as it grows? What did you do?

Also I'm aware hair will start falling out after birth, so spending loads on a balayage seems...pointless.

YABU - stay blonde so you look great while you can, and see how it goes after baby is here, you're being dramatic

YANBU - your balayage days are over

I'd talk to your stylist and see what they suggest. It does sound quite high maintenance when the baby is very little.

This. Though I also wish I’d taken more photos of my fabulous pregnancy hair — thick, glossy, bouncy. All fell out when DS was four months. So enjoy it now! And document it!

I would go back to brown and embrace the grey hairs. Your current style is completely unsustainable and you'll be glad of a no fuss hair style when baby arrives.

i had regular highlights pre baby and was pretty blonde. I had my final appointment at about 38.5 weeks pregnant. Post baby, I couldn’t keep up with hair washes, as I think blonde roots make your hair look greasier quicker. So I went darker at the roots when he was about 6 months old (after 2x appointments post birth)…. And HATED it. I felt so ugly, so unlike myself, just dowdy and blah. So I’ve gone back to what I was before and am much happier. You can make long appointments work with help from your partner and family. It’s been less of an issue than I anticipated. I would personally try and maintain looking like yourself, you already feel grotty after birth with every other body change.

Get the balyage! It's a forgiving hairdye style if you neglect it in the early post-partum days.

You absolutely deserve 4 hours to get your hair done 🩷

Ilovecakey · 29/05/2024 16:58

I get balsyage and my babies would stay awake while I had my hair done mostly just take your partner or a friend with you to help watch them plus balayage still looks hood when it grows and roots are nit as harsh as when you have a block colour or hilights so I would say yeah still get balayage

OnceICaughtACold · 29/05/2024 16:59

Isn’t balayage pretty forgiving - you can do a root top up rather than redoing the whole thing?

As long as you have partner/family to take the baby then long hair appointments are totally doable (maybe not for the first few months if EBF). It’s just that your free time reduces right down so you have to ruthlessly prioritise what you want to use it for!

HappierTimesAhead · 29/05/2024 16:59

I went brown in preparation for both my babies being born and I regretted it both times! Second time wasn't really a choice because we were in lockdown. Yes it will probably be ages before you can have it redone but balayage is forgiving. My main issue was that I felt like I lost my identity when my baby was born and not having my usual highlights added to that.

Ratatouille1 · 29/05/2024 16:59

I don't see why you can't have a 3 or 4 hour hair appointment when your baby is a few months old. You don't have to say goodbye to having your hair how you like it. I suppose its just thinking of priorities. If you are with your babies dad you should both plan to have some me time. I chose doing a sport I loved over a hair style but one is no more valid than the other. Speak to your hairdresser about lower maintenance options, but you will be able to have your hair as you like it again.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2024 17:01

You can have hair appointments that long if you wish.

Especially as there's so many mobile hairdressers nowadays who can come to you and you can even BF whilst being sorted!

Hankunamatata · 29/05/2024 17:13

My biggest issue post baby was falling asleep in the hairdressers chair. So embarrassing. I ended up just going for all over brunette with root touch ups as it was quicker.

DontKnow1988 · 29/05/2024 17:14

@Ratatouille1 well I've never had a baby before but I'll be breastfeeding and don't they feed every few hours until 6 months? A 3-4 hr appointment is easily 5 hours out of the house when you add tome for getting there and back.

Don't leave it too late. My husband had to phone my hairdresser and explain I wouldn't be in as I was still in hospital having just given birth.

CelesteCunningham · 29/05/2024 17:15

I don't colour my hair and struggle to make it to the hairdresser for a cut - but I have loads of friends with kids and full on jobs who kept their colour. Much less forgiving styles than balayage too.

I say plan to maintain it and then if it isn't doable you can change it later.

You lose so much of yourself to early motherhood, try keep this.

Northerndreamer · 29/05/2024 17:16

Find a good mobile hairdresser then you can look after your baby while they do your balayage at home.

DontKnow1988 · 29/05/2024 17:24

No, absolutely no to mobile hairdressers. I'm not going to spend hundreds and hundreds of £ per appointment experimenting with a new hairdresser when I have an amazing one already. That's even more time wasted! I'd rather chop it all off 😂

Plus who wants a mobile hairdresser in their house for 4 hours???

Lou's if hairdressers (round here anyway) offer the service despite having salons. It's because many hairdressers rent their space and will adapt to their personal customers.

But if you do t want them in your house then take baby and BF whilst having your hair done.

DontKnow1988 · 29/05/2024 17:25

Also, I don't live in the UK, mobile hairdressers are not a massive thing here. They exist but not lot of them and I don't know anyone who has been happy with one.
