Asking Permission To Take On A Second Job

Tickytocky · 29/05/2024 09:20

Apparently it’s in our t&cs that if we need/want to take on an additional job, we need to ask permission from our Line Manager before doing this.

YABU - This is a very common requirement in an employment contract.

YANBU - It’s nothing to do with anyone what you do outside those working hours.

I don't think we had to ask permission but we did have to declare it.

Depends on your line of work I think. In my area (academia) it's very common due to conflicts of interest and university reputation etc.

There's also considerations such as working time regs and a good manager would want to check you wouldn't be at risk of burnout.

Just identify as an MP. They can have as many jobs as they like.

Tickytocky · 29/05/2024 09:32

I never thought of Working Time Regs but an employer can only be responsible for adherence to those in their own time surely ?

@SerendipityJane That’s funny 😁

I had to as work in a school, but part time and term time. When asked why I was clear that as a single parent I couldn't actually support a household on what I earned from their job.

CecilyP · 29/05/2024 09:33

i work for a large local authority and we have to ask for permission. It’s usually just a formality. It’s usually just for bits of part time work so, I suppose if you want to take on an additional full time job, it might be refused.

Hidingthegoodchocolate · 29/05/2024 09:36

We don't need permission but we need to declare that the combination of jobs doesn't prevent us from taking required amounts of rest (and if high sickness then starts, the multiple jobs situation will be part of sickness meeting conversations, both from a burnout pov and in case someone's calling in sick to one job to go to work in another).

Just identify as an MP. They can have as many jobs as they like.

That's because MPs aren't employed, they're office holders, they're meant to work for their constituents rather than the state.

OP - it's very normal to have to ask, especially if you have a full-time job as it might affect your performance. If you're part-time though or on a zero hours contract, they'd find it difficult to say no!

NDmumoftwo · 29/05/2024 09:37

Really normal. Working time aside, they need to be aware of any conflict of interest.

blobby10 · 29/05/2024 09:38

Its in our contracts but realistically its only to protect the company from someone working for both us and a competitor. Or if someone was also working nights, they wouldn't be safe operating machinery during the day. There were no protests when I got a bar job a few evenings a week years ago.
