To want to move somewhere where I don’t have to hear sound from people’s phones?

The one thing that makes me feel my privacy is invaded is people’s phones- loud or quiet. I would rather hear a baby screaming, people fighting, anything rather than that tinny sound emitting from other people’s phones. Don’t mind hearing people talking into their phones, that’s a different type of sound.
I hear it everywhere now- children in buggies listening to kids programmes on full volume, grans showing their friends videos of their grandchildren, people making video calls. I find it wildly irritating and distracting.
Maybe I’m mad, but I had to move four times in a cafe to get away from devices.
I’d love to know if there is anywhere at all that frowns on this. Switzerland? I’d be tempted to move there, I think.

I actually got shouted at by a women in Dubai after I had refused to sit at a table next to her kid and a blaring iPad. She decided that if I didn’t like it I could go elsewhere ( there was no where in that restaurant where you couldn’t hear it - honestly it was so loud) she complained to the manager that I asked it to be turned down saying ‘it’s supposed to be family friendly’ she didn’t seem to understand my problem wasn’t with the kid, it was with the ridiculous volume of the iPad. Gets some fucking headphones people.

so whilst I want to come with you if you find the place, my guess is selfish and entitled lazy parents and people that give zero shits about others are rife EVERYWHERE.

Omg yes, this. I'm coming too.

Rumors1 · 28/05/2024 08:40

Me too, had to move three times on the train last week to get away from people having video calls and children with ipads on high volume - no headphones on any of them.

mondaytosunday · 28/05/2024 08:55

I thought you meant moving houses!
Have to say I haven't ever had this problem from kids. The odd adult having a conversation which sounds loud because there's not a lot of back noise (on a train for example). But I just eavesdrop and try and imagine what work they do or family they have depending on the conversation!
My niece is autistic and sometimes has her iPad but very low volume (I mean we can still have a normal conversation at the table while she's looking at it).
However while I've had my share of meetings at a café or restaurant, a few times I've wondered at others who seem to be quite revealing in theirs. Mine were fairly casual one to one catch ups, not proper strategy meetings with loads of paperwork!

I recommend the Victoria line on the London Underground. The trains themselves are so bloody noisy (up to 117 decibels apparently…) that you can’t hear ANYTHING else. I was travelling on it on the other day and a young man got on, clearly with the intention of being the train DJ with his phone. He started blasting shitty music as the train pulled out of the station, but was drowned out after about 5 seconds by the rattling and screeching as it accelerated. He tried turning up the volume to no avail, and in the end gave up and put his phone away, looking quite crestfallen 😂

That actually sounds great. I've always appreciated the rollercoaster feel of the Victoria line too.

I'm in too. I first noticed ordinary people doing this in about 2015 (as opposed to deliberate provocations by antisocial people) and it seems to be an everywhere thing now. Yanbu but god knows where we can start the new colony.

qpid5tunt · 28/05/2024 10:16

People these days are just fucking inconsiderate towards others. Just no respect for anyone else😡

I don’t mind people noise no matter what it is because it’s natural. It’s device noise- sends me crackers.

I have never ever seen a sign anywhere asking people not to emit sound from their devices. Why is it ok?

It's also the move from normal talking on the phone, with it held to your ear, to this weird thing where you hold it out flat in front of you - so you sort of shout and have the other side of the conversation as loud as possible. What on earth started people using phones like that?

I think your best bet might be where there are a lot of social conventions around food and people use eating together as an event - France or Italy, maybe?

There are signs on all forms of public transport where I live in France.

VolvoFan · 28/05/2024 10:47

Yes. The other thing I find annoying is people who use their phones like radio walkie-talkies. That pisses me off so much. I think it's because they're imitating how people talk on their phones on television programmes. They might have a camera crew following them around, so they put every call on loudspeaker.

Interesting that there's 35% reckon you're unreasonable. Presumably the ones who do it 😄

MathiasBroucek · 28/05/2024 10:56

The tech bros removed the headphone socket AND the bundled headphones. This is the result. Of course they all travel by car....

Lavengro · 28/05/2024 11:27

I've seen signs on public transport asking people not to do it, but people just ignore them.

The talking on speakerphone thing is incredibly annoying, and I also wonder if the person on the other end tends to know. I overheard - well, a whole carriage of us overheard - a toe-curlingly detailed and personal conversation the other week about our fellow passenger's friend's man troubles. Every time we went through a tunnel and lost signal, everyone relaxed with collective relief but then the call would start up again. Eventually I think we were all wanting just to shout out, "Look, he's never going to change! You deserve better!"

I think it started with property programmes, where Kirstie & Phil (or whoever) end up making an offer to an estate agent on speakerphone so we can all hear the thrilling transaction play out in real time.

I would rather eavesdrop on a conversation than listen to someone's action movie or their kid's tinny cartoon music though. If I had a gun to my head and had to choose.

Locutus2000 · 28/05/2024 11:35

You would maybe enjoy Japan, where every train carriage is a quiet carriage and respect for others is woven through society. Crime is minimal and you can leave your bike unlocked in the street.

They are not mad about foreigners/immigration though, even with a plunging birthrate and aging population.
