I never meant to, I am a learner driver and had to go to the hospital today so off I set with DP who has a full driving license but is not insured to drive this car (I am) anyway I had my L plates on and as I say am insured and so on.
I got really mixed up at a round about and ended up on the slip road on to the M25 so all I could do was go to the next junction DP was beside himself (so was I ) but I stayed calm and went to the next junction and came off, however the bit of M23 I was on is a wash with cameras, I had L plates on and am clearly a learner, Am I going to lose my license before I even get it? Do I have to inform anyone, am I in a lot of trouble? Help.

Really LL, I am so worried.
I will book extra lessons now, I am usually so good. I can't believe I was so stupid, I really don't want to lose my license before I get it.

Thank you SO.
I did stay as calm as I could as I knew I could not stop or back up the slip road so I had to drive well and get off safely.

I am so not going to the hospital unless someone else is driving from now on

Hiw can you be insured to drive a car when you haven't got a drivers license?

girlfrommars · 05/04/2008 17:27

Learners can be insured on a car.

How else could they learn?

lardylumps · 05/04/2008 17:27

yes you can but the insurance becomes invalid if you drive alone. Just like it does if you have no tax etc.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 05/04/2008 17:31

Hmm. You're right. I guess I thought the "instructor" needed to be insured on that car too though.. is that not the case?

kittywise · 05/04/2008 17:37

You would have thought that the 'instructor' would have to be insured too incase they needed to take over and drive!

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 17:37

I had DP with me, He has a full license.
The car is insured fully comp and I am a named driver (learner).

The car belongs to first DH and he lent it to me (as I said I am on the insurance).

did somone answer htis int eh end?

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 17:53

Hi Cod, I have been told I will be ok.
I really hope so. At least I have stopped shaking now.
Was waiting to be arrested.
It was a genuine mistake.
So do you think I am going to be in a lot of trouble? Or am I ok as the others have said?

lardylumps · 05/04/2008 17:54

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 17:58

guilty indeed

we walk over the M25 on the school run, I've never seen a camera flash yet..........

K999 · 05/04/2008 18:02

I see lots of cars on the motorways and bypass where I live which have L plates on. It does not always mean that the person is a learner driver. I doubt anything will happen to you. My friend learned to drive in her husbands car and the L plates were pretty much on all the time....even when he was driving.

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 18:02

Dp was meant to be telling me the way .
I got there fine, I have no idea why I went wrong on the way back, think I am just stupid

OP posts:
DJCod · 05/04/2008 18:03

i think the teacher has to be insured - am i wrong?
is a learner not allowed on motorways?
i dont knwo much about htis tbh.

Pesha · 05/04/2008 18:03

For future reference I do think the person with you has to be able to take over and drive if needed so they also need to be insured to drive the car. If your dp has fully comp insurance on another car then chances are he is covered to drive any car. If not then I think you need to look into this.

I learnt to drive 2 years ago and pretty sure I was told whoever was with me had to be covered to drive whatever car we were in.

DJCod · 05/04/2008 18:04

no that si a commonly HEld myth re if oyu are fully comp you can drive any car,
we haev this a LOT in court
some companies do offer it as an extra.

peoepl are clueless on the whoel abotu insurance myslef in cluded

guiltyascharged · 05/04/2008 18:04

yes cos on " car cops "hte other night the drivers brother had ot haev insurance iirc

arf

Swedes · 05/04/2008 18:10

Learner drivers are not allowed to drive on motorways. Learner drivers and L plates are allowed on motorways. I could drive your car with your permission and be insured by my own isurance. I don't think you've got anything to worry about.

I thought you were going to say you and your partner switched seats on the slip road.

K999 · 05/04/2008 18:19

As long as you are insured to drive the car then that is fine. He does not need to be. Yes, it is illegal for a learner to drive on the motorway but unless you were speeding or driving erratically I doubt anything will happen.

DJCod · 05/04/2008 18:21

realy?
wow thats odd isnt it

Pesha · 05/04/2008 21:00

I have checked my insurance before to make sure I was covered to drive other people's cars and I was but I did think it was relatively standard. Will have to remember to keep checking in future then if I change insurers, thanks Cod

K999 - are you sure? I thought the accompanying driver has to be able to take over if necessary and fit to drive if needed, if they are not insured then they cant surely.
