To be really annoyed at this selling technique on FB marketplace?

DS needs a new double bed. He's in a single now so I will need to buy a new mattress too.

I will buy a new mattress from local shop but am looking for a wooden bedframe 2nd hand.

Ever since looking every advert I've enquired about that has a clearly used looking bed messages back with 'oh that's gone but we have the following in stock :' and list brand new beds and mattresses.

What is the point.

Surely if someone is replying to an ad for a 2nd hand bed they're not going to suddenly have new bed money. They're just wasting everyone's time.

Few examples from just this morning :

Are they marked as used? I use the filter to filter out new- items which are new but marked free are not likely to be so ime

Yes! They're marked as used.

Its frustrating, I've bough mine and DDs bed from market place in the past. Mine is gorgeous, I sanded it down and painted it with frenchic.

Never had this before but now every ad is like this and all different people.

Yes it’s v annoying and they clog up Facebook with their stupid lying adverts. I’ve had that experience too. You contact them and the pricing is completely different, about 10 x more.

Hateliars34 · 27/05/2024 08:14

These ads tend to be for new stuff. They sell sofas too. It's annoying there's no way to filter them out as I'm sure the quality of what they sell must be horrendous as it's all so cheap.

It's easy to see differentiate them from the real used ads though. Just click on the sellers profile and if they're selling a bunch of furniture, don't message them. The descriptions they use are extremely similar too.

LucyShoo · 27/05/2024 08:15

I had the same experience looking for “used” as the OP.

Morningcrows · 27/05/2024 08:16

Same here. Took me ages to find a real second hand bed. I was about to give up.

But they're not the cheap prices they've listed.

They list a £50 bed that looks used, in a bedroom with stuff laying about.

Then when you message they say, oh it's £250

Yes this is so annoying. I’ve reported so many fake profiles and adverts like this. They are all women selling old used beds but you click on their profile and they’re selling about 20. And clearly no one actually has that many old beds to sell! I have never messaged any as I thought they were some kind of scam
but I wondered how it worked!

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 27/05/2024 08:20

There are loads of beds and sofa ads like that, at least of the ones you've posted is obviously not a genuine person

Do you click on their profile before you contact them?

It reminds me of pre internet days when properties for sale were listed in the local press. Perfect sounding properties in popular areas would be advertised, you would ring up to enquire, to be told that property is sold but we have these other properties…..

These are just the first 3 that came up this morning that I screenshot as examples.

I find it impossible to get beds or sofas from Marketplace for this reason! If it helps I got a lovely bed frame for around £75 from Wayfair.

SilentSilhouette · 27/05/2024 08:49

Is there a free cycle group on Facebook? Our local one often has double beds going free. I free cycled one of ours on there which just needed a little TLC on the headboard.

Latenightreader · 27/05/2024 08:54

I was looking for a mid sleeper earlier this year and there were so many like that. Most of them were obvious from the adverts (often pictures straight from company websites) but a couple only became clear when you looked at their profile. Someone tried this on our local page recently and was promptly removed.

Theunamedcat · 27/05/2024 09:00

Report and block everytime

And if they are in a group report to group admins for removal too

Click on their profile and you'll quickly figure out if they're genuine or not. It's annoying but Facebook doesn't care unfortunately.
