To be concerned my 5 year old is still in pull ups at night time?

Just that.

He’ll be 6 in October and still wearing pull ups at night time. He has the odd dry night, but mostly it’s still wet when he wakes up.

Do I need to contact a doctor / paediatrician?

DD wet the bed around 4 times a week until she was 10ish, at which point it just stopped overnight. There's a hormone that regulates it that some kids just don't start producing until later in childhood.

Its intensely frustrating, but the NHS will start investigating from age 7, but sometimes it just takes time.

Springchickenonion · 30/05/2024 14:34

My dd 7 still wears them. Gp.wasnt worried but I pushed for a referral. Only because it will take months to come through and she's upset about it. If she ends up being dry before then I will let them know so someone else will get seen quicker. We have been waiting 4 months and not even a letter yet

My sons 6 and a half and still wetting 90% of the time. Trying not to make too much of a deal out of it. We buy ‘ninjamas’ and they are brilliant. Never leaked once but the drynites and regular pull-ups always leaked. Pretty much every time.

I would recommend trying him without a nappy. From my experience, wetting carried on while they were having the nappy on. It would overflow and wet the bed occasionally too so I one day I just thought to stop using them. Not once they wetted the bed when in just pyjamas. Definitely worth a try even though it is counterintuitive.

@greatvisuals I think you have misunderstood my post.
He is under peads for toileting issues not for nighttime bed wetting. Each appointment they ask if he is dry at night and have said they may also investigate that further when he is five.

Utterlyb · 30/05/2024 18:40

@Pricklypears as you can see from this thread there is an awful lot of variation in advice and when to start investigating! In our area it’s also around age 7…. However my 12 yr old is also still incontinent at times at night even on medication, my other child was around 8 before became dry at night with use of an alarm. As he is having some dry nights ,then this is a positive sign as it shows his hormones are starting to kick in….it might be different for a child who was still wet every single night but in your case it may be a good time to start training . It’s a good idea to start with wearing pants under his pull ups as this in itself might start to make him aware of what is happening. As things progress, worth investing in a washable bed pad as well as plastic under sheet…it means in the night it’s easy to just change to bed pad rather than the whole bed.

Sorry about that.

It read as if you were advising the OP to take her 5 year old to a doctor because they are in pull-ups.

Totally normal - my son was wet every night until he was 8 then it stopped overnight. I would just wait it out to avoid stress for you and him.

contentlycontent · 30/05/2024 18:48

Mine is exactly the same age and has only just come out of nappies at night. As others have said, making a big deal of it would make it worse so we just ignored it and he stopped by himself.
I have 3 friends who have same age DC and still in nappies at night, don't worry about it yet

Terrribletwos · 30/05/2024 18:51

I found the pull ups (in retrospect) just delayed my child being dry at night, I really would not recommend for other parents.

My child was the same and incontinent for peeing up until a late age..maybe 9, I don't remember exactly.

We did try the alarm thingy but it woke up everyone but him!

He eventually outgrew it and is now a happy, perfectly continent adult.

Really, not sure what the reason was, might have been he is a deep sleeper but definitely think the pull ups didn't help.

I agree. A week after I stopped using them my son was dry every night. Only one, maybe 2, accidents after the pull-ups were taken off.

I think the makers of these 'bedpants' know they are prolonging the natural readjustment to being dry at night.
I don't think mums were wrapping their school kids in terry towels each night right up to the invention of these in the 1990's.

Following as similar situation, my sons 7 and still in them at night he does have additional needs but toilets fine during the day, not sure if its something I should be going to GP with now

FizzyStream · 30/05/2024 19:45

My eldest son was 8 I think when he was fully out of night time pull ups. It's very common particularly in boys. His younger brother by three years was dry at night before him. Bit of a sore point at the time but he caught up. It's a hormonal/brain chemistry thing I think. It'll suddenly click when he's ready.

Following this thread I decided to give my 5 year old another go without pull ups at night, we tried in November (at which point he was 4) and did a solid 4 weeks and he was wetting the bed often twice so we gave up as it was just so stressful.

He always has a v full pull up in the mornings.

Ive been limiting fluids from 5/6pm so quite early, waking him for a wee around 9.30/10pm and then again between 1-5am (he usually wakes at some point then anyway). So two night weeks but trying to avoid “lifting” as I’ve been told not to do that and actually getting him to take himself.

Hes had two dry nights, which we’ve never achieved even if we are getting him up for the loo and one small wee accident which woke him (still progress IMO).

Fingers crossed we are finally cracking it. Part of my son’s issue is definitely motivation.

My 12 year old is too, boys sleep more deeply and don't wake to go for a wee - it's normal, GP says we've nothing to worry about and he'll sort it naturally.

Echo PP to say this is not "normal" and your GP should be referring on

xyz111 · 30/05/2024 20:42

My 6 year old is the same. I spoke to the doctors and she said they wouldn't do anything until he's 7

Gabby82 · 30/05/2024 20:56

I champion the alarm as some others have mentioned. My almost 6 year old was wetting the bed a few times a night. We bought an alarm and within a week he was consistently dry. That was 7 months ago and he's maybe had 2 accidents in that time. I was very skeptical about it but wanted him dry before 6 and it definitely worked.
