People who look at phone whilst crossing the road

Why can’t they get off their phones for 10-20 seconds when crossing roads? These idiots don’t look up either before stepping out onto the road.

This afternoon I had to apply my brakes as some mindless idiot stepped out. Whilst his eyes were glued to his phone. Shouted “eyes on road, not on your phone”

Leave them to it. Natural selection.

I was watching a thing about this on tv recently it’s called popcorn brain. I’m guilty of sitting on my phone at home but try to avoid it when out and about I am not very good at multitasking so I’d def get run over or trip

We had a very near miss the last week. I had been to a bottomless brunch with some friends and dd and dh had picked us up. Suddenly a young woman stepped out in front of us as we rounded a bend, she was on her phone. I shouted at dh to stop and fortunately we avoided her, she just carried on walking oblivious.

SurelySmartie · 26/05/2024 17:45

It’s been made illegal in some countries. Distracted walking laws I think it’s called.

Mountainpika · 26/05/2024 17:48

Idiots. Hoot at them and see them jump.

ThinWomansBrain · 26/05/2024 17:49

And the ones that walk along crowded pavements, headphones in, eyes glued to phone, oblivious to the fact anyone else might be walking in the other direction.
I live in central London. so am typically the only person walking towards the tube when everyone else is streaming out in the morning.
100 meters of hell.

The thing is if drivers hit these idiots, we will be done for dangerous driving. When the phone idiots were to blame

I see this so often. And people who are glued to their phones in pedestrian areas and nearly walk straight into me piss me off too. I have mobility problems, use a walking stick and I'm not very sprightly on my feet, but there has been numerous occasions when I've had some idiot nearly plough into me because I can't move out of the way quickly enough. And invariably they have a go me because it's my fault!

shearwater2 · 26/05/2024 18:11

I've had people walk into me on purpose in London when I was using my phone for directions- was definitely looking where I was going! Also I might just be changing the song- I still pay attention when crossing the road.

LlynTegid · 26/05/2024 18:15

The law should have blame for certain crashes automatically one person or the other, unless it can be proved otherwise. Hit a cyclist unless they have moved inside a vehicle from behind, for example.

This would be one case, if you are on a phone whilst moving you are presumed to be at fault.

LoveStories · 26/05/2024 18:19

I actually saw a hit this spring a couple of cars ahead -- fortunately car going slowly along a narrow road near the university, but the guy actually rolled over the car bonnet. The driver got out and screamed, I think in fright as much as fury, and then passed out on the ground.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/05/2024 18:21

My mother's friends son was killed because of this.

Hit by numerous cars on a dual carriageway.

There should be public safety ads done about it.

GrazingSheep · 26/05/2024 18:22

Get a dash cam.

Ladybird69 · 26/05/2024 18:23

I was driving down a road last week and a young lad was walking right down the middle of the road watching something on his phone. He didn’t realise I was there until he’d walked into my bumper! (I’d stopped as I could see that he had no idea I was there!) and what did he do? Walk around me and carried on watching the screen! Unbelievable

I get the same as a visually impaired person. I have friends with guide dogs who've been walked into as well.

PassingStranger · 26/05/2024 19:00

They are Zombies.

what level of stupid do people have to be to be told to pay attention to what's going on around them when crossing the road?
but, yep, spend money on an ad, it will give them something to watch while they cross the road🙄

NoProblems · 26/05/2024 21:40

If it was at a zebra crossing, you should have slowed down and looked at either side and stopped if there was anyone on either side.

Your shouting could have made things worse if it wasn't at a zebra crossing.

What do you think of drivers being on the phone while driving?

Apart from that, it is of course stupid and dangerous to cross a road while on the phone.
