That we all follow fashion?
I know, within seconds of me posting this someone will be along to say they are completely free thinkers and would never be sheep like enough to follow any trends but if that's the case why do we never see anyone dressed in a flowing regency gown or trussed up in a victorian dress?
Personally I love vintage dresses (70's/80's maybe, like Mary wears in Young Sheldon) but I see loads of people wearing the same style of dress, where does it come from? Who decides what 'looks good'?
I remember as a teenager reading Cosmo and the style advice at the time was that boot cut jeans were great for everyone and the only shape of jeans anyone remotely stylish should consider! As it turns out, as a tall, fat woman with relatively slim legs skinny jeans look much better on me! I couldn't have bought them at the time even if I wanted to as nowhere stocked them until I was in my late 20's!!
I think we have far more choice now which is good but to some extent we can still only choose what someone decides to buy in for retailers.
Personally I am waiting for a full Georgian revival inspired by Bridgerton so I can waft around in an exquisite gown all day (not sure I will be able to walk the dogs in it but I am prepared to give it a go😆)

What about someone who has their own style and buys clothes that fit that, whether they are currently in fashion or not?

I'd class that in number 3; i.e. wears what they like whether fashionable or not.

There are literally millions of clothes shops in the world.
You can find anything you like if you look.

But not everyone cares enough

Anyone who did was interested in clothes even if not liking fashion trends

JamSandle · 26/05/2024 12:18

Humans are a social species so we will always be influenced by each other.

Haha ok fair, I suppose some of my favourite t shirts I have had since my youth 😂

You can care about clothes and style without caring about fashion.

Not caring about clothes is a different kettle of fish, that would involve only buying replacements when what you had wore out, with the only criteria being that it fitted you and was warm enough/cool enough/waterproof etc.

Standingupstandingout · 26/05/2024 12:24

I don't follow fashion. I don't buy magazines, follow you tubers etc. I genuinely don't care what other people wear and I'll wear what I want. However, I do buy what's easily available in the shops so I suppose people have to follow it due to that. I'm not going out of my way to find regency gowns etc and there's no way I'd fit into vintage clothes 😂

Etsy - but you'd pay a fortune for them (not unreasonably as they are usually hand-made and complicated to sew).

Etsy, costuming companies that specialise in role-playing clothes, or you make them yourself, or use a dressmaker.

Broadly, there are three categories of person:

  • Cares about fashion and makes an effort to be fashionable
  • Consciously anti-fashion, i.e. alternative (so might wear Victoriana/Goth/whatever)
  • Doesn't care about fashion at all, wears whatever they feel comfortable in and is suited for the occasion, it might happen to fit current fashion if newly bought but it might equally be a 20 year old t-shirt and elastic waist trousers.

I think there is also a fourth type.

Wears what they have until it falls apart, then gets whatever is available in Sainsburys (or their nearest supermarket).

Unless it has puff sleeves in which case, carry on wearing the fallen apart clothes.

midgetastic · 26/05/2024 12:37

Well I only buy stuff when the old stuff is full of holes , practicality is key and getting stuff to fit is the usual problem

I do chose what I think looks ok but I would not make multiple shopping trips - I'd get the best of what was available

Obviously everyone is part of society and accepts its rules to a greater or lesser extent

But to say everyone follows fashion really is an oversimplified statement

Sone people will be able to telll you what colours and styles and brands are in and sone won't
Some people would look in a magazine or follow people or whatever to see what is in and some won't
Some people would look to update their look regularly and sone just wouldn't

So sone people just fit in because they don't care enough not to and sone people it's much more important to them and it's not really fair to those that care and make special efforts to try and rebrand "following fashion" as what everyone does

I mean everyone eats but not everyone is a foodie
Eveyone moves every day - not everyone is into exercise

Choccyp1g · 26/05/2024 12:40

@midgetastic I think you are with me in my fourth category.

Branching out slightly, it annoys me when I watch a film set in the 60s for example, everyone will be wearing brand new 60s clothes, but in real life, most of us are wearing clothes that were bought a few years ago.

NonPlayerCharacter · 26/05/2024 12:46

It's not really weird...fashion has always been a key part of humanity and clothes are self expression. Even people who don't care about it don't tend to want to look dated, even if they do like reproducing a particular era, which isn't the same thing. Most of us have a look we like.

upthespoutagain · 26/05/2024 12:48

It's been most noticeable for me with women's dress lengths. Before the lockdown most women I worked with in school were wearing short dresses with leggings or opaque tights. When we went back after lockdown suddenly they were in long Amish-style dresses with trainers. I was a bit resistant at first but now I waft about in smocked flowery dresses of a style I last wore as a preteen. My Mum is happy, though, and thinks I have finally turned into "a lady" 😁at the age of 55!

ArchaeoSpy · 26/05/2024 12:53

i guess it depends on the following of certain fashions eg i love the steam punk type outfits, although usually im in more common clothes

Ciderlout · 26/05/2024 13:10

I think certain fashions come along such as bushy eyebrows and initially I think they look awful but then they start to grow on me and my opinion changes. I wonder if that’s the same for clothing?….

What I do find weird is that people spend so much on designer gear. It’s obviously a status symbol and to have one or two things is one thing but for some people who spend thousands it blows my mind. Hey ho were all different I guess
