Next door's dog has been barking non-stop all morning

He's a really quiet black lab. I never, ever hear him (I'm in a semi and he lives on the other side of the shared wall). My neighbours are a lovely young family. I think they are out. He has free access to the garden. I'm starting to worry for him, but I'm not a dog owner so not sure if non stop barking from a dog who is always really quiet is something to be concerned about? YABU he's fine, just having a rare barky day, YANBU something's up with doggo.

Go and check. Dog might be trying to alert someone to something.

I’d be concerned too. Not sure what you can do though, but tell them about the unusual behaviour when they get home. We’re they definitely there last night?

Does he have access to water in the garden? If not sure can you lower some over the fence to make sure!

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 25/05/2024 10:56

Is he in the house or garden? Could you knock and if no answer try and look in the window? Wondering if he's hurt himself or trapped somewhere, collar caught on something.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 25/05/2024 10:57

Sounds as if he's deliberately trying to get attention. When I responded to a similar situation it was because the owner had fallen in their house and needed help. Have a little check.

MonaChopsis · 25/05/2024 10:59

I have a very quiet lab, and would definitely worry that something was up if she was barking.

TabithaTimeTurner · 25/05/2024 11:00

Go and knock on the door, then have a nose through the window/over the fence to see if you can see him.

A car is on their drive now and he's gone quiet. It's not the neighbour's car so maybe they've gone away and someone else is looking after him. They are the kind of folk who come home from work at lunchtime to walk him, so he's well cared for. Hopefully the visitor is staying or taking him with them. He's such a good boy with their two little ones.

If he's normally quiet then it is unusual behavior. I would pop round and knock on the door. If no-one is in can you see through the windows or into the garden to check he is ok. Is the dog used to been left alone for periods of time? Or is there usually someone in the house all the time. I would also make the owners aware when they get back. It could be that he's knocked something over or got himself trapped in a room or can't get outside as he's knocked something in the way of his way out. This can all be easily rectified by the owner for next time. If he's not used to been left alone for long periods of time then they know to do shorter periods or get him used to longer periods at home.

It’s probably just he’s been left alone then. Could you grab the visitors as they leave and ask if the dog is ok, because you heard it barking?

My aunt's dog once barked for hours when they went out. Turns out he had knocked the clothes horse over and blocked his doggy door in the conservatory so he couldn't get out to the garden for a wee. The neighbours mentioned that Rio had barked for hours when they came home. My aunt went in and saw a puddle of wee, then the clothes horse knocked over in the conservatory in front of the doggy door. Lesson learnt for her was not to put the clothes horse near the doggy door in the conservatory. Perhaps his way out or in is blocked.

PupInAPram · 25/05/2024 11:19

@TabithaTimeTurner good idea. I'll watch out for them leaving and if he's not with them I'll let them know.

Aww hope he’s ok.

We had a chocolate lab who was good as gold, hardly ever barked (except at blackbirds and hedgehogs). Beautiful dogs ❤️

My neighbours dog used to bark all day when they gave him access to the garden. I don't know why. But he stopped once he was restricted to indoors only.

Hmm, sounds like the temporary helpers left him on his own for too long. Poor dog. I would definitely tell the dog's owners!
