…parking ticket. Because I don’t have £60 to pay it, much less the £100 they’ll charge if I make an appeal and it fails.

car park recently changed ownership. New signs up. I buy a ticket on Ringo as usual.

except, instead of being Regent Park 221 it’s now Regent Park 345 or something like that, and so they say I don’t have a legitimate parking ticket.

technically I’m wrong because I didn’t check the code was right, I just used the same one as usual.

morally I’m right because I bought a bloody ticket.

if I appeal, are they likely to fail it? Money is so tight at the moment, I’m scared to risk it but also I can’t afford to lose £60 when I paid to park!

I did the initial ‘appeal to car park owner’ but that was declined so now it can only go to the independent people.

please help me figure out what to do.

Had a ticket while parking near Kew Green recently. Ringo app wouldn't accept code for the area in, it suggested a different code for an area a little further up. Appealed with evidence that a ticket was bought for the time period and it wasn't attempt not to pay - ticket was cancelled.

So worth giving it a go, as a PP said clock paused for us when the appeal went in. Good luck!

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/05/2024 12:56

Defo worth appealing. I doubt it will fly though. Ringo always repeats the actual location linked to the number so they will say you should have checked. Worth trying to appeal though. Good luck.

Anothnamechang · 25/05/2024 13:02

I would definitely appeal. I appealed my council issued ones after they sent sheriff officers to my house. They were lovely when I explained that I had parked in the 1 hour max space as I was nipping in for an appointment however I was admitted and in for 3 weeks ☺️

Am in similar position - my parking app updated and reverted to one of my old cars as default, so I paid for parking for a car I no longer own and got fined on the one I do. I’m really annoyed, but I think in my situation I need to suck it up. Yours is slightly different though, so might be worth trying to appeal.

I did the same, I had a new car and paid for my old car. I appealed it and showed I had paid and they let me off. Worth a try 🤞🏻

LIZS · 25/05/2024 13:53

Ask them to prove that a car of your numberplate parked at the other location. Genuine errors should be successful appeals but unfortunately legislation to implement such guidelines was talked out of Parliament a few years ago.

Zwicky · 25/05/2024 14:00

Did you get the letter within 14 days? I got one overturned because the postmark in the letter was day 13 after the “offence” so they couldn’t prove they had contacted me within 14 days. My first appeal didn’t work - it was a “double dip” fine because I went to the same retail park twice in one day and they said I’d been parked for over the 3 hour limit.

Appeal. I had an issue last summer when I parked but the ticket was issued before I could type the full reg number in. Machine was faulty. I had no more change and there was no phone signal so couldn't pay by app. It had my first three letters so thought it td be ok as clearly it matched my car but it was both a pay and display AND an anpr system.

I got it reduced to £20. I had the ticket so proof id paid. I was a bit pissed off but better than the full fine.

Mossstitch · 25/05/2024 14:17

No help but frustrated solidarity! They do these things to catch you out on purpose and make money I believe. Recent experience, grey rainy day, somebody coming out of space so I quickly reversed into it as there was a queue behind me. Free parking that day as a Sunday, I only go on Sundays as don't trust myself with the machines/technology. Got a ticket for parking in a disabled bay! When I checked all the other disabled bays were painted with yellow lines and an extra wide access also criss crossed in yellow, this one was same width as all the normal parking bays, no yellow lines but one of those disabled wheelchair signs on the floor..........I'd parked over it and did not see it🤦 never using that carpark again, I'll shop elsewhere!!

User1979289 · 25/05/2024 14:53

Exactly this happened to me. I wrote them a letter and posted it recorded offering £10 to cover their admin charges. They accepted it.
It shows reasonableness from yourself and it is a lot of hassle to take you to court.

Itschaoshere · 25/05/2024 16:50

I did this once, one road, two codes. They cancelled the ticket.

Hatehayfever · 25/05/2024 17:15

Good Luck Op. Definitely appeal. And thank you, because this thread has reminded me to update my parking apps having changed my car

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 17:16

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator it's still her fault.

TeenLifeMum · 25/05/2024 17:19

Is it a council car park?

I put the wrong number plate (one letter wrong because I added it wrong to the app initially and hadn’t realised). I took screen grabs and sent evidence via email with a very humble message and received a rather patronising letter saying it was my fault (yep, true) but they’d wave the fine as they could see I did pay. But I emailed the council direct as they owned the car park. That was with pay by phone app.

No one said any different

It was a genuine mistake that I guess anyone could have made, IE, not a daily visitor to the cP but a regular, several times a month for a long time - go it, got the details beforehand and bingo

This is why I gave the good advice

HTH

ElizabethVonArnim · 25/05/2024 17:28

I had similar, except that I put the wrong car in - I'd set up all the family cars on my RingGo app and got it wrong. They let me off as I was able to prove I had paid. I just sent screen shots of the app to the appeal bit of the website. Good luck!

Remagirl · 25/05/2024 17:35

There's a group on facebook called Private Parking Tickets Help and Advice. It's run by a couple of experts who will advise you free of charge. You need to post a copy of the fine with personal details redacted and they'll tell you if you have a defence.

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 17:36

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator but your advice wasn't good.

Ignorance isn't a defence. OP didn't pay to park in the car park they were in.

Fgshwga · 25/05/2024 17:39

If you go onto Facebook and join the group "fight my private parking invoice"
They can give great advice

Don't do anything yet - but you will have to appeal - this stops the £60 rising.
The notice may be wrong or out of date or hasn't followed procedure so you may get off on that.

It may also come under a keying error which usually they will reduce to £20

The ignorance is on your part for not recognising what OP has stated and your inability to comprehend that people do make mistakes.

Quote from OP !morally I’m right because I bought a bloody ticket."

I totally agree with that

FYI - I usually have to bite my tongue and roll my eyes when people park incorrectly and get a ticket and then mona.

In thiscase/ the OP made a genuine mistake

That's the phrase I was trying to remember. That's what I got.
