Reposting here for traffic:

I found this a couple of weeks ago just above my hip on the side. It just sort of appeared out of the blue. Does anybody know what this might be?

I thought it may be a scab, but it hasn't fallen off, and I can't scratch it off either. Dh thinks to get it checked, but isn't this just a random pimple? The body is a strange thing.

It looks a bit wart-like

But do go and get it checked out by your GP

ToTheMoontoStay · 24/05/2024 11:10

@ShinyBandana I will. My grandma died of skin cancer that lead, or was a product of stomach cancer. It is a sensitive subject for me. It doesn't look overly worrying, and I just wanted to see if anybody had a similar looking thing.

It looks like keratosis but definitely get the GP to take a look

KreedKafer · 24/05/2024 11:20

It's almost certainly nothing sinister - but definitely get it checked to rule out squamous cell carcinoma.

It's probably just a little wart or something, but if it is SCC, it's a very easy skin cancer to treat and obviously it's always best to catch things early.

My DP had an odd little thing on his upper arm that wouldn't go away, and although his turned out not to be anything nasty, the doctor repeated several times that he was definitely right to get it checked and that he should do the same again if any other weird little moles/bumps/warty things appeared.

ToTheMoontoStay · 25/05/2024 14:03

Thank you @KreedKafer and to everyone who has replied. I will get in touch with the GP after the bank holiday.

This is it today, not sure if is has changed at all? It is probably just me.

This is a close up, doctor Google is scaring me, can't believe it is bank holiday too, typical!

I just have the one, and it is on my side above my hip, so not an area that is even exposed to the sun these days!

It could be a basal cell carcinoma. I had one that was flesh coloured,on the middle of my back,if it hadn't itched I wouldn't have known it was there. 3 years ago, I had what looked like a teenage pimple on my chest, showed my GP when I went about something else,he said it was just a spot. 6 months ago,it changed shape, was red/white, then when it started itching. I knew! Went to a private dermatologist for confirmation. It was removed 3 months ago. Also had a thing on my arm, appeared to have grown out of a brown mole. That went dry and crusty, that was a type of wart and removed by liquid nitrogen.

ToTheMoontoStay · 25/05/2024 14:41

@Nannyfannybanny thank you, I'm pleased everything was okay for you. I'm in my late 30's with 2 young children, so I haven't had this part of my body out in the sun in years. That's why it is really strange!

Probably a wart. Doesn’t look hugely sinister. Its symmetrical. How big is it? If you can cover it with a pencil rubber its less than 6mm and much less likely to be anything to worry about.
get it checked but dont ruin your weekend over it.

ToTheMoontoStay · 25/05/2024 14:46

@Wherearemymarbles thank you so much. It is only 4mm so far. I'll ping an e-consult through to my gp surgery when it reopens after the bank holiday. My family is absolutely riddled with cancer on both sides, it is too easy to worry! I bet it is a wart!

Fraaahnces · 25/05/2024 14:50

Honestly, getting it checked will at the very least give you peace of mind. Please don’t muck around and wait.

ToTheMoontoStay · 25/05/2024 15:04

Thanks @Fraaahnces I will contact the gp surgery first thing on Tuesday. Hopefully it is just something minor. Dh said what ever it is we have caught it early and it'll be fine.

I wasn't doing a great job of reassuring you was I,😂. These things take years to grow and change. Still better to get it checked, they remove a big margin. I had a red lump on my leg,was convinced it was something nasty, turned out to be scar tissue. Big black crusty thing on my spine, due to have it removed,it disappeared completely! Was told it was probably a seborrheic keratosis, harmless, had one removed from my cheek. Neighbour had something that looked the same, but was a lentigo, and malignant,so trust the experts.

ToTheMoontoStay · 25/05/2024 22:48

Haha @Nannyfannybanny oh not at all, I'd much rather be safe than sorry! It's crazy isn't it?! I had a mole on my back for 7 years, it crusted over and fell off randomly. I have a really light brown bruise looking thing in its place.

It is definately best not to self diagnose as you say. My GP surgery will be receiving my e-consult through Tuesday morning complete with pictures!

Even if it is SCC it's no big deal - most people I know have several taken out every year, dh about a dozen! (we were brought up when it was fashionable to stick your dc in the sun to get a tan, and not in the UK!)

HÆLTHEPAIN · 25/05/2024 22:57

I had something similar called a seborrhoeic keratosis. It looked like a cross between a wart and a mini cauliflower floret. Very similar to your picture. My gp removed mine because it constantly caught on my bra strap but they sent it away and it was tested and shown to be harmless. It seemed to pop up relatively quickly too.

Obviously it needs to be checked but it is likely nothing to worry about.

ToTheMoontoStay · 26/05/2024 11:57

@CatherinedeBourgh thank you, i couldn't even imagine putting my dcs in the sun to tan. Crazy times those were!! I grew up in the late 80's and the 90's so it was all sunny d, and spray in hair "sun-in." My parents kept quite a collection of suncream of various brands in the garden shed! They were the same ones there year after year, with varying amounts left, sometimes a new one added! They were always abit warm, with a stinging sensation when you applied them!!🤯

@HÆLTHEPAIN thanks, that is reassuring to know. It is on thr side of my abdomen, so doesn't catch. Not sure if they will just leave it. It is the only one I have, I haven't had anything similar before. Maybe it is 'another' sign of getting old, I'm in my late 30's!!

CatherinedeBourgh · 27/05/2024 07:16

I know, I was constantly criticised for not liking sunbathing, and highly praised if I got any colour on my face.

Only the very pale people of irish extraction used sun cream, and that was factor 2 or 5 at most. Even on holiday in the tropics!

I still remember the pain of some of the sun burn I had.

Fraaahnces · 27/05/2024 08:51

@CatherinedeBourgh I think the “factor” system has changed significantly too. It certainly wasn’t regulated like it is now. Pretty sure they could say anything.

KnittedCardi · 27/05/2024 10:18

Get it checked for sure, but in my late 50's I have so many weird and wonderful lesions on my skin. Recently had suspected BCC removed from my scalp, turned out to be an inflamed follicle! What a waste of time, but I suppose you can't grumble about that.

I have numerous "warts", remove several a year, skin tags, same. I have weird multi coloured bumpy moles, some of which have been "dysplastic". Mostly it's just genetic and skin damage, and age 😭

I get mine checked every year just to be safe though, as like you, lots of cancer in the family, but then many lived into their 80's and 90's so I suspect that's the main reason.
