For thinking it's ok for DC to watch TV before school

If they're completely ready to walk out of the door.
We just got a TV in the lounge yesterday, and DH has gone a bit huffy about them watching it this morning.

Just want to check if I'm being unreasonable because DH has a tendency to be a bit of a party-pooper and I'm not sure if that is colouring my judgement and I'm unwisely pushing back against that.

Do your DC watch TV before school?

We don't. I think it sets their brains on the really bad start to the day. My ds stops eating or doing anything once the TV was on.

Mountainhowl · 23/05/2024 09:27

Mine do while eating breakfast, this will change when we get a table to eat at but for now while they have lap trays on the sofa they have the TV on for 15 mins or so

CannotbebotheredNope · 23/05/2024 09:27

At primary school ,yes once completely ready for school. Secondary school TV never on because teenagers generally got up later and had to leave earlier for school.

Stylishcooncil · 23/05/2024 09:29

It would not have worked for my kids but they are autistic and putting the TV on in the morning forms an extra barrier to the overall transition from bed to school. For any child who wasn't negatively affected by it, I would say why not?

Marblessolveeverything · 23/05/2024 09:29

Not here, I have a very funny radio program on that they love. I just wouldn't want it intruding on our morning.

They get plenty of TV in the evening after homework, sports, play. I couldn't stand the morning nonsense anyway or cartoons at that hour.

😂 this place.

Why is that funny? I literally don’t know anyone who watches TV in the morning before school/work. Who has time?

RedCoffeeCup · 23/05/2024 09:30

I think the person supervising the morning routine gets to decide! So your DH can decide on the mornings when he is responsible for getting the kids ready and out the door, and it's your choice on the mornings when you're doing it.

ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife · 23/05/2024 09:31

Sometimes I read threads on here and it makes me feel like a shitty parent with an utterly chaotic household.

And then I speak to people in the real world and I realise that a lot of people on here are either (I) anal as fuck, or (II) talking complete shite.

thesmedsandthesmoos · 23/05/2024 09:33

Mine are allowed up to half an hour as part of the morning routine, but only once they're ready to go. They never make a fuss about switching it off. If they watch in the morning, then they aren't allowed the TV on after school, as I like to keep it to a minimum where possible! (although we're not at home much after school anyway due to after school clubs/sports etc)

LBOCS2 · 23/05/2024 09:34

Sometimes my youngest gets up and puts it on because she's awake earlier than the rest of us. Sometimes they watch bits and pieces on their devices. My eldest went through a phase of having a really long loo break in the morning which was a cover for playing Genshin Impact. They have never been a problem to get to turn it off but it definitely slows things down, so if you can keep it to once everyone's ready then it acts as a good incentive to be ready. I really can't get wound up about it.

Lucky you, knowing only people who don't have young children that get up at the crack of dawn.

I used to feel like that no I'm more of the everyone fed no one dead motto.

Mine are the world's slowest eaters so they get up watch tv with their breakfast. (Cardboard Cereal not eggs or greek yoghurt) while myself and dh gets ourselves showered and dressed for a full day work as well as pack lunches and bags and afterschool lunches. If we were sitting at the table discussing politics I would be going to work in my pyjamas.
No issue with turning it off.

Sunshineclouds11 · 23/05/2024 09:40

We have TV on before school.

He's absolutely fine to leave it to get ready and no issues turning off to leave.

Depends on who is getting them ready! DH? Yup. Me? No. Not because one episode of Bluey will ruin them, but because I take extra care with their hair etc and we run out of time.

ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife · 23/05/2024 09:43

How does having Bluey on interfere with their hair care?! 😭 if anything it keeps mine in the one place so that I can do their hair…

It would never even enter my head to turn on the TV in the morning,
So an absolute no in our house.

We listen to to the radio and chat about the news/sport and take part in the morning quizs.

this morning we had a little dance and sing along with that song"shut up and dance with me"

Morning quiz? Grin

AnneNotEmily · 23/05/2024 09:44

We stopped TV before school when DD1 was in reception as it was always ‘5 more minutes’ and then tears when I was turned off before a programme had finished. They never ask for it (it’s been about 5 years) and generally play or read a book if they’ve time to spare.

ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife · 23/05/2024 09:45

See we have no issue with the tv going off when it’s time to leave. But if my kids “played” before school then getting them out of the door would definitely be more of an issue.

Jxtina86 · 23/05/2024 09:48

DD watches TV in the morning - 20mins or so. No issue turning it off. She goes to breakfast club 4 days a week so it's an early start and it helps her just ease into the day. She doesn't like rushing so we account for that and it works well so far!

We do if they are up at 6.30 and don’t have to leave until 8.30…

See this is what would make us late. Just one more page, can I finish the chapter, I've nearly done the book. DS is pathologically incapable of putting a book down mid way through a page.

If the smalls start a PAW PATROL adventure with their toys and I stop it to leave, I'll end up with tears and half the sodding toys on the toy run.

Getting them to turn the telly off at the end of a specific show is way easier but then we don't massive restrict screens so it is something they'll happily do without/ turn off themselves

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2024 10:03

And we had it on in the 80s. I walked with my friends and every. single. day. we watched Aladdin on video

GoBonobo · 23/05/2024 10:06

Mine would, once up and ready, it was a good timer for actually leaving the house for my youngest who otherwise tended to dilly dally (“ok we will leave for school when Octonauts is finished”) and gave me 20 mins to wash dishes, finish sorting myself out for work and so on. Is your DH around in the mornings, and is he prepared to entertain them instead?
