Money or happiness?

What would you choose?

Offered two jobs. One is better money but more stress. The other is a happy job but around 3k less per year. Same hours.

Yabu = choose the money
Yanbu = happiness is worth more

For 3k per year difference, its negligible. Definitely go for an easier life.

For the sake of £3k, after tax, I’d go for the “happy” job.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 22/05/2024 23:37

3k after tax wouldn't be enough for extra stress.

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/05/2024 23:41

How sure are you that the first job will be more stressful and the latter happier? For the sake of a negligible amount like £3K I’d opt for happier - but consider all aspects of each role before deciding that one will definitely be less stressful and more enjoyable: some of my favourite jobs which gave me the greatest fulfilment have been the intense, “hard” ones whilst the only job I’ve ever hated was, on paper, unstressful and “easy.”

Are you talking an extra £180 per month after tax? How much would that help?

Ohidolovewine · 23/05/2024 12:11

I equates after tax etc to about 6 quid a day I've realised

Not for £3k but I definitely think there is an amount I would take more stress for

Sharptonguedwoman · 23/05/2024 12:14

I think it depends on your finances. If the extra money would be life changing, then go for the higher salary. Might also be worth looking at commuting costs, etc. If the extra money would be nice but is not vital, you are free to choose, seems to me.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 23/05/2024 12:16

For £3k easily life for sure. It’s would have to be £10k+ for me to take the harder option.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/05/2024 12:42

I would say it depends on the amounts and your finances more generally.

For example: £90k or £93k? Go for the lower sum as the extra hassle won't be worth it.

£24k or £27k? Go for the higher sum as it will make a big difference to your standard of living.
