GPS tracker for children

MadDogMama · 22/05/2024 16:43

Posted here for traffic.

I'm taking my 8yo DD to London at the weekend, and I want to purchase a GPS tracker as I am paranoid about losing her.

I have an android phone, and I have been looking at the Samsung smart tag 2 but notice that it has a range of only 120 metres. It isn't a GPS tracker.

Could any of you lovely people recommend any devices that you've tried and tested, please? Or should I stick with the idea of the smart tag?

Many thanks for any responses.

That's not a bad idea. Thank you.

I'm guessing an Apple air tag doesn't work on an android phone? That's what we use

Without wishing to feed your anxiousness, you shouldn't rely on tech.

You need to talk to your DD about what she needs to do if you get separated - at age 8, you've probably gone through many of the typical precautions, but this is the time to go through them again.

So can she recite your mobile number? Will you sharpie it under her sleeve in case she forgets? Does she know who she should ask for help? (Police, uniformed staff, someone with children) Do you set up rendezvous points where you both go - eg entrance you came in by, information desk, specified street corner?

Life360 has a 250 feet range.

Magnastorm · 22/05/2024 17:24

Why would you worry about losing her specifically in London?

Just do as you normally do when you are out and about, and make sure that she knows to stay put/ask a trustworthy adult for help if you do (which you won't) get seperated - which at age 8, she should know anyway.

I'm with PP are not relying on tech. Focus on teaching your DD what to do in a situation. My kids are younger than yours and know my mobile number our address off by heart. I routinely test them on this.

In the event that they get lost or separated they are to go into a shop or pub and ask them to call me.

That doesn't mean that the tag has to be within 120m of your phone. It will work if its within 120m of any Samsung galaxy phone. That's how tracking tags work, they use Samsung (these ones, or Airtags (Apple) or any android (Tile)) to ping around a network and show location that way.

No, they don't. The Samsung smart tag is the air tag equivalent for android.

Yes, I have done all of that and will reinforce it on our journey.
I aren't solely relying on the tech, I want it as and added security measures so that if we did become separated, then I can instantly begin to track.
She will also have my number written on her skin.

Because it is a very large, and incredibly busy city. We don't live in a city so she isn't used to being in such a busy environment. Neither am I for that matter.

If you're using the Underground, most of the time you cant get a signal.

As I mentioned previously, Im not relying on it. It's a back up.
She already knows what to do if/when lost, I just want an added security measure.

Oh brilliant, thank you for explaining that to me. I've only just started researching.
I'll get the smart tag then, thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Tracki GPS tracker - this has worked for long distances and android phone. Used with DH, not tried with kids!

Solasum · 22/05/2024 17:40

Make sure you avoid the rush hour tube and Leicester Square station, you will be fine.

AmiShitsaline · 22/05/2024 17:41

I agree it’s a good idea to have one as an extra measure, not sure why anyone would be against it as it makes it easier to find a lost child.

Thank you for this, I was beginning to wonder if I was overreacting 😂

Do you or a friend have an old phone you could buy a one month SIM card for, and put Life360 on it?
