to want this tooth OUT

Saw the dentist today after yet another flare up of my wisdom tooth. This is the worst yet, unreal pain (and I have a high pain threshold). Taken ibuprofen and co codamol regularly which is barely taking the edge off. Taken oramorph this evening as well and I’m still in too much pain to sleep.

Dentist has referred me for extraction but said it’s unlikely to meet the threshold?! I can’t eat or sleep! Plus I won’t know for months if they’ll do it or not.

I am so bloody tired! Anyone been here before and got any ideas? Bonjela, corsadyl, anbesol and salt wash doing nothing either.

I know dentistry in this country is on its knees and I was lucky to get an appointment at all, but given she did nothing I may as well have not had one!

When you say flare up is it an infection or another type of pain? I had 2 infections and got referred for extraction (was on the waiting list for 2 years but did eventually get there!) so I would have thought you'd meet the threshold if there's an infection there?
When I was waiting I did get the option to go private - realise that may not be possible for you but I think I was quoted around £250? Hope you get it sorted.

I’m not sure this time, previously there’s been infections this time she couldn’t see anything causing the pain.

2 years 😭

Private is available but it’s about a grand apparently.

My DN had awful pain and infection after infection. He was told it’s a 3 year wait. He went private and paid £500.

Definitely worth it if you can afford it.

QuestionableMouse · 21/05/2024 23:30

I'd look into private. I had one out and it was about £400- had to pay on my credit card but the relief was totally worth it!

3 years??

Don't know if prices have gone up but she said £1000 today for private. Given the wait times though it might be worth looking in to.

To be honest if someone came in here now and offered to do it I’d do it - anything for a bit of sleep!

I had a wisdom tooth extracted by the NHS emergency dentist as a result of an abscess. It cost me virtually nothing.

Ubugly · 21/05/2024 23:35

I need one out I have stupidly avoided and am private and they said 350. Knowing my luck will be twice that as I can't face it. You will probably be seen within days.

StripedTomatoes · 21/05/2024 23:37

Phone around some private dentists. I paid £80 consultation fee and £99 for the extraction just a couple of years ago. I'd be very surprised if it was actually going to cost you £1k.

Oh yeah. That honestly hadn’t occurred to me! Will get on the phone tomorrow, thank you

If it is a lower wisdom tooth in a difficult position and needs surgical extraction with iv sedation or General anaesthetic , that is a very different proposition from an easy upper wisdom tooth and could easily cost this amount as a surgical extraction is a complex proceedure.

Not always. I had a lower one with "tricky roots" removed by an oral surgeon with just local. It was fine.

Thanks that is useful. I definitely don’t want to just find the cheapest and hope for the best!

Still horribly sore, every other time it’s hurt before it’s not gone on this long. Oh for a decent night’s sleep!

I had a lower impacted wisdom tooth removed privately in 2020 as I couldn’t stand it, constant infections and obviously given the other things that were going on in the world no idea how long NHS would take. Definitely phone around. Mine was done in my local dentist by a private dental surgeon under local anaesthetic.

fieldsofbutterflies · 23/05/2024 07:14

DH had a tooth removed privately last week and it cost him £130 for a same day emergency appointment.

Jowak1 · 23/05/2024 07:20

I had my lower left wisdom tooth removed privately just before Xmas it cost £3000. I am very fortunate that I could afford it. The problem I had was that the tooth kept getting infected and the antibiotics I kept getting prescribed began to stop working. The NHS waiting list was 18 months!!! I couldn't and wouldn't be in pain for 18 months so dipped into savings. The dentist said it was so far back and partially erupted that it would always keep getting infected. So what was I to do if the antibiotics kept not working? I was told pain medication. Money well
Spent I hope you get sorted x

Jowak1 · 23/05/2024 07:20

Sorry forgot to
Mention I needed GA hence the cost

Londonrach1 · 23/05/2024 07:22

Hope you find a solution. Tooth pain is awful x

waitingforthetram · 23/05/2024 08:12

£1000 is very steep. Does that include sedation as well?
I'd definitely shop around. However if the pain is keeping you up at night, at the very least your own registered dentist has a responsibility to see you and get you out of pain. I'd call them again this morning. Even if you were just in yesterday.

GoogleWhacking · 23/05/2024 08:14

It wouldn't cost £1000 where I am. Max £300. Definitely worth ringing around.

As said before if it is complex and requires sedation or general anaesthetic it will cost this and more.
The day fees for a private hospital are upwards of £1500 and that's just for the day stay .

OverZealous · 28/05/2024 08:10

Thanks all - I agree I shouldn’t have left the dentist without insisting on proper pain relief.

The pain is now manageable (finally!), and my referral for nhs extraction seems to have been accepted and booked in for July. Genuinely surprised at how quick they can do it. Fingers crossed they don’t change their minds after the scan!
