Any opticians on here? Been referred to opticians by school sight test

Feeling a bit anxious as only my child and one other were given letters after school today.
It says he was found to have reduced vision and something was written on a form which I’ve attached and I don’t understand.
It says to book him in at an optician of your choice.

Can anyone interpret the comments written?

@SavetheNHS

Thank you, that’s reassuring. So his vision is not really poor, but might just need some support with glasses. Fingers crossed the appointment isn’t too traumatic!

@TiredArse
His eyes are already Sun sensitive, so god knows what they’ll be like, I’ll definitely bring his sunglasses though.

Lots of children cope just fine having drops put in.
And sometimes it can be a wee bit of a battle but it will be over in seconds and will allow the best test possible.
This is why we have school eye tests so that things like this can be picked up and sorted.

My dsis passed 3yrs of school eye tests (yrs ago) and started to fallback in her reading etc.my DM took her independently to a local optician who couldn't understand how she was able to pass them/read from the board/small print!

Not an optician but those numbers look like he is a bit short sighted (things far away are a bit blurry). The acuities aren’t too bad at all so don’t panic. He will probably need glasses for seeing things further away like the board.

Just to warn you, the eye drops to dilate their pupils were horrific for us. Dd has had them 3 times from age 6 and each time it has taken 2 adults to hold her down while the optician puts the drops in and even then she’s screamed, cried and struggled. It was traumatising for all of us.

What an incredibly unhelpful thing to post for a Mum who is already worrying.

OP Thousands upon thousands of children have this done all the time with no issue.
If he is interested in the science of it, even better.

My dc who was picked up at Reception screening and then had to have the drops is pale / fair haired / light blue eyes, and apparently they dilate much quicker than the brown eyes. Again, that was really interesting whilst we were in the waiting room, recounting the "My, what big eyes you have" line from Little Red Riding Hood.

It IS a good idea to take some sunglasses though as they do take a little while to go back to normal.
