To ask for options if I don’t want Turkey teeth

I admit that I haven’t looked after my teeth. They’re not in an abysmal state, I brush morning and night, but years of coffee, tea, red wine, and fizzy drinks have all taken their toll. They‘re discoloured, grey rather than yellow, and I hate smiling with my teeth.

I have no interest in full on Turkey teeth. I would like the same teeth, but whiter and repaired where needed. However, I’m a bit lost with where to go and what options are good, and what are bad.

Anyone any experience of this?

Have you been to a hygienist? I was amazed the difference it made to my teeth which were very discoloured.

Ask your local dentist about cosmetic bonding, keeps your teeth looking natural and doesn't damage the underlying tooth.

As a PP said - go to the hygienist as your first task:

Then some whitening strips. Should make a big difference.

Not recently. That’s the other thing - I had a private dentist but got out the habit of regular check-ups, so haven’t been for years. Really need to go back.

There is absolutely no point in spending money making your teeth look better is you have no intention on keeping them maintained. All work needs maintainance and will quickly degrade if not looked after.

As others have said first book a check up and hygiene visit , not only will this get you healthy , it will also get any staining removed, damage to teeth repaired and advice how to keep stain away. Any dentist can prescribe and administer tooth whitening which, if your teeth and gums are healthy enough, is a great way of brightening your teeth up .

After that it depends on what else, if anything needs doing. Most dentists can do simple cosmetic treatment or will know who to refer to for more advanced work.

Ask friends and family who they recommend as a dentist . You will not get cosmetic work done on the NHS so probably best to seek private treatment from the start.

My teeth periodically get a bit grey from tea drinking etc, and a quick polish from the dentist sorts it. So maybe you could start with a polish/cleanup from a dentist or hygeinist?

Hygienist, whitening, composite bonding is brilliant for minor chips and improving the appearance (also makes them look whiter). If they need straightening then braces, although composite bonding can also help subtly with the appearance of the placement too. Otherwise veneers from a reputable dentist (the Turkey teeth are mostly crowns and not veneers. Crowns should only be used following a root canal and when necessary not for cosmetic reasons). Personally I'm slowly going through the stages of straightening, whitening, and some composite bonding, and will avoid veneers (too expensive) and Turkey teeth (don't like the appearance and don't want to ruin my natural teeth, even though they aren't pretty they are entirely functional, which is something I'm not going to throw away unless I need dentures). I'm sure my teeth will end up looking less perfect, but doing a better job. So no Hollywood smile, that's not my goal. Well maybe old Hollywood! Straighter, whiter, with the chips fixed, and a bit less see through, that's my goal!
