To panic about toxic gases from new pizza oven

alwaysalwayssomething · 19/05/2024 18:19

Am feeling so stupid - bought a new indoor pizza oven yesterday, plugged it in and realised after 20mins that there was a really toxic smell in the kitchen. My 2 yo and 5 yo were sitting there with me, we had no windows open. Realised instantly that there would be some toxic chemical gases burning so took them out immediately. Spent all of last night googling and am now worried that they’ll both get cancer and my anxiety is off the scale. DH thinks I’m totally over reacting.

AIBU appreciating that there is nothing I can do about it now 😥

You are being completely over the top, all new appliances have that chemically burning smell.

albertoross · 19/05/2024 18:21

Why is there toxic gas in your pizza oven?

SkaneTos · 19/05/2024 18:21

Do you have the instructions to the oven? Any information about it?

alwaysalwayssomething · 19/05/2024 18:24

Thanks for quick replies - apparently you’re meant to burn off residual chemicals from all new ovens for 30mins or more as there can be some left over from manufacturing and can be toxic when burned. There was nothing in the manual so never thought of it but makes complete sense now.

I take it that you are all fine today?

alwaysalwayssomething · 19/05/2024 18:25

Yes all fine today - and at the time. I know that there’s nothing I can do now but just feel upset that I did it to them, even if a tiny risk.

Happy to hear that you are all feeling fine today!

magnoliasweets · 19/05/2024 18:34

YABU to panic about it. Do you suffer with health anxiety in general, op? It might be worth having a word with your GP if you are prone to overthinking things like this. I'm glad you're all ok though, and no adverse effects today.

Hermittrismegistus · 19/05/2024 18:35

Go to your doctor and get help for your anxiety.

alwaysalwayssomething · 19/05/2024 18:46

Honestly, thanks to all of you who have replied and for a unanimous YABU so far. Am feeling calmer already.

@Hermittrismegistus and @magnoliasweets my DH said the same as you both and thinks I need to see my GP. I’d be afraid of time wasting though and really, what could she do other than suggest meds maybe?

This is the kind of thing I’d post about and worry about forever. I just wanted to say I get it. The worry is paralysing at the time isn’t it and means you can’t think of anything but that. I really think you will be fine. You won’t be the first person to have done this. You could go and watch a tractor rally and breathe in all the exhaust fumes, or go for a walk and someone could be burning stuff with fumes that aren’t great. This isn’t intended to worry you more but more to say humans are resilient and if it was going to affect you, you’d have known about this at the time and you’d have all been coughing non stop all night and all day today or feel tight chested.

I’m glad you’ve had some helpful comments on here, sorry for the ones that just say ‘you need to seek support for anxiety’ as that’s not very helpful when the worry is very real in the moment. Xxx

@anxiousmummaa the constant worry is awful, isn’t it? I have just ordered the book, thank you

She could suggest talking therapy, CBT, mindfulness, a good variety of support options.

And you do realise your "what could she do other than suggest meds" is a strange thing to say? Would you say that about diabetes or sepsis? If meds would help what's the issue? Sometimes they're necessary and the only option. You seem to think that a Doc issuing meds for anxiety is somehow passing the buck or using the way option.

Echobelly · 19/05/2024 19:41

I'm pretty sure cancer from inhaling substanced is about prolonged, repeated exposure to carcinogens, not something happening once unless it was a massive dose of radiation so I'm very sure there will be 0 effects from this.

rwalker · 19/05/2024 19:43

A lot of these warnings are just complete arse covering
yes these toxic fume could cause cancer if your sat in a room full of them continuously for years

5YearsLeft · 19/05/2024 19:44

This thread isn’t funny at all, but @alwaysalwayssomething , if you have a laugh left in you, Mumsnet ads are at it again. We’re here talking about how you get help for your anxiety, that happened because of this pizza oven, (and do see your GP; there’s a lot you can try besides meds - apps, yoga, meditation, therapy, CBT, etc) and this is the bloody ad they put on the page!

Your GP may be able to refer you for talk therapy, or recommend medication. It may just be that you require something for a while to help get you back onto an even keel. Please don’t dismiss medication, it could really help, and if this is an ongoing issue, it could get much worse if you don’t seek treatment, and I’m sure you wouldn’t want it to start impacting your DC, which it could do as time goes on. Please seek help, op. Best to nip it in the bud now if you can. I wish you the best of luck.

I have one of those. Best kitchen gadget I've ever purchased.

Happy to say, still alive 18 months on and it's in regular use. Enjoy! And have a look at the pizza express book.... the Florentine with the egg on top is divine!

alwaysalwayssomething · 19/05/2024 20:23

@magnoliasweets and @FarmGirl78 thank you, you’ve given me something to think about. My meds comment was from a place of thoughtlessness / ignorance, sorry, I thought I would be time wasting but, from the comment here, I can see that this anxiety is beyond normal.
