To bin cooked spaghetti that's been sitting out for two days?

Not a major problem but still, I'm being made to feel like I'm overreacting and "wasting food". Happy to be told I'm being unreasonable...

On holiday at a camping site (DH, mil, 2 DC).
I cooked spaghetti on Friday for pesto and there was some spaghetti leftover. I asked if mil / DH could pop it in the fridge whilst I put toddler to bed. Mil told DH it didn't need the fridge and instead, it's been sitting in the pot since Friday night (with the lid on).
Mil wants to feed the spaghetti to my boys tonight (4 yo, 16 months old) whilst we eat something different. I think the spaghetti should've been in the fridge and it should be binned.

So, Mumsnetters, am I being precious and unreasonable not to feed my kids spaghetti sitting out for two days? (It's just spaghetti with red peppers, no meat, no sauce).

Yabu - feed the children the spaghetti!
Yanbu - chuck it!

Oh God yes bin it. There's no chance it's safe to eat! 🤢🤢🤢

ouch321 · 19/05/2024 12:07

I would think it would have gone a bit minging after 2 days even if not unsafe.
Pasta is cheap enough to churn out and not fe bad

veryawkwardohno · 19/05/2024 12:09

Cooked pasta left out is pretty unsafe, in the same way as cooked rice is. Def wouldn't feed it to anyone let alone small children

RosieLeaLovesTea · 19/05/2024 12:10

No you are NBU - bin it

Newcrocs · 19/05/2024 12:10

Does she hate your kids? Why would she want to feed them 2 day old congealed spaghetti that's been sat out in the heat?

If she thinks it's fine to eat then she can have it ~and get food poisoning~

I'm pretty blasé about things like this but that's disgusting.

Blarn · 19/05/2024 12:10

Compared to many of mn, I am pretty relaxed with leftovers. But pasta at ambient temperatures for two days? Absolutely not. It's botulism I think, that can grow, the same as rice. Tell your MIL to eat it! Or just chuck it now and cook new rice.

LeftLegRightLegYourBodyWillFollow · 19/05/2024 12:10

No way my children would be eating that, and I wouldn't either!

SauvignonBlonk · 19/05/2024 12:11

No way would I eat that or let anyone else eat it (only exception being my exH lol)

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/05/2024 12:12

I would bin it .

This! Bin it op and show them the food safety advice online if they insist it's safe!

Olika · 19/05/2024 12:12

Absolutely would not let my kid eat that. and wouldn't eat it myself either. She can have it herself.

SwingTheMonkey · 19/05/2024 12:12

Even if it were safe it will have dried out. Disgusting! What on earth is she thinking?!

Renamed · 19/05/2024 12:12

It’s actually been quite warm so no way. Plus even if it was safe taste and texture will be disgusting

Doowop1919 · 19/05/2024 12:13

Thanks all.
I knew I wasn't being unreasonable really but she is so adamant sometimes and can be very opinionated.
DH has actually just come in saying there's no chance we're feeding our kids that 🤣 so there we have it. In the bin it goes.

A bit outing but mil is German and her parents lived through the war. She doesn't waste a scrap of food, ever. Unless in really extreme circumstances. So that colours her common sense sometimes.

Not sure I'd fancy it if it had been in the fridge TBH
Let MIL & DH enjoy it.

madameparis · 19/05/2024 12:14

Not a chance. I’m fairly relaxed about eating things days after BBD, keeping and reheating leftovers etc. I would eat something left out overnight (indoors) the next day. But 2 day old pasta left outdoors - no way, not worth the risk. Especially something so quick to remake fresh, like spaghetti and pesto sauce!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/05/2024 12:14

YANBU, but I would have strongly encouraged her to eat it if she was so sure it was fine, and sat and watched her do it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/05/2024 12:15

I see a decision has been made but how awful she wanted to give it to the children and have something else herself!

TellMeWhoTheVillainsAre · 19/05/2024 12:17

No way - congealed sticky horrible spaghetti. I wouldn't even bother putting it in the fridge it's just not food that works well as leftovers. Whatever culinary delights your MIL is planning later on let your children eat that!

Or else tell her she can have the spaghetti and you'll make something else for you and the children. If she doesn't want it why would she insist your children eat it?

Ah I see the way I worded that looks really awful. But it was because there's not enough left for us to eat a full portion ifswim. (Still, I agree with you though!)

Don't bin it so. Let her eat it herself 😉

I will report back and let you know if mil eats it tonight...it wouldn't surprise me 😅

Apart from the safer aspect, who wants to eat two day old congealed pasta?!
