To ask for tips on buying single beds?

I'd like to replace 2 single beds. I've looked over the usual websites, ikea etc. Its quite overwhelming. The beds currently in use were gifted to us. Icamt decide to but cheap and cheerful or higher end. They are for two pre teens lads. The storage underneath would be a bonus but not essential. I don't like the beds that you lift up for the storage to be under the mattress. I prefer the divan. Does anyone have any advice about what else I should consider? These are big purchases for me.

I would definitely get one with drawers.

I would go to ikea in person as you will get a decent bed for whatever price you pay.

If DC are likely to be tall I'd go for beds with no footboards so they can put their feet over the bottom edge. They are pre-teen now but presumably you want the beds to last and boys grow rapidly (usually)

One of my DSs has the Brimnes bed from IKEA and this has quite a compact frame which helps with space and you can get drawers with it.

IKEA is decent quality, deffo get under bed storage.

Consider that your preteens will turn into adult size relatively quickly so buy for adults not children. My Ex made this mistake when we lived together, cheapskate so scrimped on buying his older sons' beds for our house. I had to make him replace them quite quickly as they weren't strong enough for adult sized boys to sleep on and the frames cracked under their weight.

I have cheap ikea pine beds and they have been good for years now. I bought them because I had moved areas and didn't have beds. I don't see why you would replace beds with cheap new beds though, unless the beds are broken? Or if you need drawers and the current beds don't have them. I'd only replace with something better.

I know you said no lift up but we got this for my son (14) and it’s brilliant. Lifts up easy with the mattress on and much more room than drawers. The only issue I have is that if we need to take it out of the room (we’re decorating) the lid doesn’t stay down so we have to tie it up!😂 That doesn’t happen often of course.

If you still aren’t keen, they do other types and they were great with customer service and delivery.

That's really helpful. And definitely a consideration I hadn't thought of.

They are rickety. For various reasons they used to be put on their side and moved from room to room. They haven't noticed that the beds aren't great. Yet. I want to get something whilst I can take my time and choose carefully.

Thanks for the link. I definitely don't like the lift up but it's good to know that the website is recommended.

I would avoid a divan with drawers, the bases almost always drop out, leaving you with no storage at all.

my 6ft 3 son is currently sleeping in this and its comfortable and strong enough for a man

SlumberWorx TEWIN VINTAGE HOSPITAL STYLE BLACK METAL BED FRAME - SINGLE/SMALL DOUBLE/DOUBLE/KING SIZE WITH MATTRESS OPTIONS (No Mattress, Single) : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen (his was cheaper than this, around £70 but I don't have the exact link)

my 15 year old has this style and its been taken apart and put back together in 3 house moved and its still brilliant

Clayton Wooden Bed Frame with Mattress Options (Buy & SAVE!) - White | very.co.uk

I'd say with beds the most important bit is the mattress, drag them to a local shop and find out if they prefer medium or firm etc (don't have to buy from there, just for an idea)

Thank you. They're great links.
