Feeling down with reoccurring tonsilitis

Cloud44 · 18/05/2024 08:44

Ive got tonsilitis for the second time this year, been on antibiotics both times. I’m feeling pretty down with it this time because I keep thinking it’s going to come back again! The antibiotics seem to have worked but I’ve caught a cold on top and it feels like one thing after another. Has anyone else had this and it hasn’t come back again? How can I stop worrying about it?!

I was plagued with this when I was younger. 40 years ago. Doctor told me to gargle with soluble aspirin. It was the only thing that worked.

My daughter (24) has finally had hers removed after years of discomfort and disruption. Medics might not want to remove them but they don't see the years of harm keeping these things causes to young people!

Mystro202 · 24/05/2024 05:11

Another vote to get them removed privately if you can. Imo it's cruel letting people suffer on vecause they dont get it 'enough times' a year.
Even once a year is debilitating never mind every few weeks. I got mine out at 19 but had to go private (had health insurance) the recovery was hard but not as bad as a bad dose of tonsillitis. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to recover if you go ahead with removal. Being a teen I didn't and picked up every infection going after.
But I must say I have very rarely been ill since & I'm twice the age now as I was getting them out. It was life changing for me. Solidarity to everyone suffering with tonsillitis, it's horrific 😔

Cloud44 · 24/05/2024 06:03

For all those suffering with it regularly do you have to take time off work when you have it and how long does it take you to shake it off? There seems to be more around this year than normal.

I used to have it a lot, and honestly the best thing is not to take antibiotics. Take whatever painkillers you need and make your body fight it, that’s what worked for me, never had it since

CatWontBudge · 24/05/2024 06:49

My DD had tonsillitis more than 30 times and quinsy at least 3 times before we decided to pay for private removal because the NHS said she didn't meet criteria. She was 13. Her school was constantly sending me warnings about her poor attendance. She weighed about 5 stone, wore age 10 clothes and was basically always pale and unwell.

The recovery was brutal, I slept with her for 4 nights because she was so unwell. But as others said after about 10 days she really picked up. We had a brilliant year, she had a couple of sore throats but nothing major and she grew a huge amount because eating actually became possible for her - her throat previously was so narrow due to the size of her tonsils.

But as a warning, removal isn't always the end of it. She's now 15 and is on her 2nd batch of penicillin this year for a throat infection with a tonsular abscess. It's not quite as bad as her tonsillitis of old but it's still grim. She feels lousy. It interferes with so much of her life and I have every sympathy with all of you who suffer the same way. It's an absolutely miserable affliction.

Absolutely agree with everyone
the recovery was pain like I’ve never felt but I would do it all again to be free of those tonsils that were poisoning me.
I’m lucky enough to have health insurance through my employer so I’m not sure on the cost but it’s well worth finding out.
even maybe paying for an appointment with an ENT consultant who can advise you on the best course of action…they took one look at mine and said they needed to come out ASAP

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 24/05/2024 07:43

Keep asking your GPs for a referral to get them removed.

Best thing I ever did.

Cloud44 · 24/05/2024 17:45

For those of you suggesting soluble aspirin, I’m struggling to find any, am I being stupid?! Would soluble panadol paracetamol work?!

The tonsilitis keeps coming back after the antibiotics finish, has anyone else had this? I don’t know what to do!

Go back and get another type of antibiotics.

Penicillin v is the first type of abx but there are other types too.

Try the other methods first over the weekend. Im on day 3 of my TCP gargling and its getting slightly better

@molly5678 thats really interesting to know! My GP said i have really deep crypts so it could be a case that all us recurrent sufferers have such chronic infections that antibiotics just wont work.

What is the recovery like? I imagine it cant be much worse than suffering with tonsillitis for a week? How much was it if you don't mind me asking? I may just take the plunge if it can be done and I can recover in a week or so so can just use a weeks leave.

Really hope you get it sorted.
you’ll need a couple of weeks off work and I’d say it was a good 6 weeks until I was back to normal
I felt like a new person though once I recovered…you won’t regret it

Yes I was the same. There really is no solution but removal when it gets to this point. I tried everything and nothing worked. sorry you’re suffering. Fight for a ENT referral.

Rubyupbeat · 25/05/2024 04:42

I used to get it up to 8x a year as a child, up to age 21, when I got the worst bout ever, I got taken into hospital for a week, I also found out I was pregnant whilst in there. That was the last time I got it, I am 60 now and my tonsils are large and ugly from so much abuse.
I never had them taken out as a child, not sure why .

Humphriescushion · 25/05/2024 05:57

I feel your pain op. I suffered for years when I was younger ( in my 20’s and 30’s). Even hit a lamppost when trying to park in pain going to to doctors, and I remember him saying he did not know how I got there they were so bad.

Bizarrely ( or maybe not) I had some molars taken out and never had tonsillitis ever again!

BlastedPimples · 25/05/2024 08:13

I regularly got it as a child. Had had enough aged 22 and had them out.

Recovery wasn't great. Got an infection so felt really wobbly. But totally worth it.

Thisbastardcomputer · 25/05/2024 08:38

I had mine removed at 33, I had a hell of a fight on to achieve this and it was 30 years ago. I had chronic tonsillitis for 5 years and saw doctor after doctor.

I paid privately to see a specialist and stressed how much time I was taking off work and how utterly miserable I felt.

The specialist agreed to remove them, I didn't have to pay for the surgery, he put me on his NHS list and it was done 6 weeks later, it's probably the best £150 I ever spent.

I was told I would end up with all sorts of health problems having no tonsils, I have had no problems and it's been wonderful to be normal and get on with life.

Cloud44 · 25/05/2024 13:54

Has anyone else experienced fatigue after tonsilitis?
