Tesco ... AIBU?

I had a Tesco grocery delivery due yesterday evening. I cancelled at lunchtime (by phone, speaking to an actual person who did it there and then) because something urgent came up and I wasn't going to be home. The order was less than 30 quid's worth, as I had fallen asleep while doing it! The lady refunded me - all good.
Yesterday evening came and the shopping was delivered after all. My daughter unknowingly took delivery of it and put it all away.
I've just noticed that Tesco have charged me for it all. AIBU to think they could have sucked up the loss, as it was their error?
I spend an absolute fortune there and get a shopping delivery weekly without fail ... including one today as yesterday's delivery was so small!
AIBU?

I don't understand. Your daughter accepted an order you hsd cancelled and you think you should get it for free?

PonyPatter44 · 17/05/2024 18:10

Doesn't sound like online delivery is really working for you. I'd be going back to shopping in person, if I was you!

Scaredycat259 · 17/05/2024 18:10

🤦‍♀️

ZipZapZoom · 17/05/2024 18:10

If you cancelled on the day it was obviously already loaded and that's why it was delivered. I'm surprised the women refunded you initially but given it was delivered and taken in then of course they charged you for the delivery.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/05/2024 18:11

Your dd took the delivery in, so yes.

Spirallingdownwards · 17/05/2024 18:11

The error was not telling your daughter you had cancelled so she knew to refuse delivery. You gave the items so you pay.

I guess because OP said noone was going to be home so the customer service assumed it would be returned to store.

Yes, YABU.

justaqui · 17/05/2024 18:13

Thanks everyone! Looks like I am being unreasonable.

No you're at fault for cancelling at such short notice & not letting your daughter know.

Course they're going to charge you - you got the shopping

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 17/05/2024 18:13

It was refunded on the basis that you would not receive it. The fact that it was then delivered and received is the end of the matter. Your DD could have refused it. But she did not. There is no doubt at all that you owe the money.

PossumintheHouse · 17/05/2024 18:14

If you ring up customer services and say "Grrrr, hello Tesco. I cancelled my delivery, but you still sent my delivery and we accepted the delivery and now you've actually CHARGED me for it!" what do you think they're going to say?

Been doing this weekly as soon as they started making home deliveries, which must be a couple of decades ago now. It has worked just fine!

Why couldn't your daughter have accepted the delivery in the first place rather than you cancelling it? YABVU for wanting free food.

Boomer55 · 17/05/2024 18:16

If you received the goods, then they need to be paid for.

dreadisabaddog · 17/05/2024 18:17

The order was accepted so no, sorry.

crumbpet · 17/05/2024 18:18

Nah this is on you

ByUmberViewer · 17/05/2024 18:22

I also don't understand why you cancelled when your dd was there to accept it anyway.

TansySorrel · 17/05/2024 18:26

If you cancelled because you weren't going to be home its good your daughter was able to accept it so it didn't need cancelling.

Of course they should have charged you for it, it's in your house. If the delivery was made and you were not In fair enough they shouldn't try and charge the delivery fee for a delivery you cancelled if not in, but you can't seriously expect them to give you the food free of charge.

noctilucentcloud · 17/05/2024 18:30

I'm surprised they gave you a refund to start with. But of course they'll charge you if you accept the delivery, otherwise folk would play the system by cancelling last minute to get their shopping for free!

justaqui · 17/05/2024 18:37

My daughter is 17 and I didn't think under 18 was allowed. I could be wrong on that though, as there was no alcohol in the delivery.

What the hell?
They are not charity- if you accept the groceries- then you have to pay- obviously...?

justaqui · 17/05/2024 18:52

The votes are unanimous, I am indeed BU Grin
Whilst I appreciate the responses, I probably don't need to be told the same thing a hundred times! So I'm off to enjoy the sun in the garden. Happy Friday night!

I’ve cancelled on the morning of a delivery when I’ve realised once they send the receipt a few hours before that I had totallY failed to check out my main session of adding stuff and have only got a bunch of bananas coming. Every time they have kindly cancelled it and not turned up. So I do get why you’re annoyed OP. You didn’t mention it to your daughter as you didn’t expect it to turn up. However surely you did need the shopping anyway as you’d put it in your online trolley so it’s no big deal really?
