To think that barking dogs is the norm now?

I recently moved to a lovely neighbourhood but I'm at my wits end with the constant barking dogs here. There are two on my street here that start from 7:30 AM and are on/off until 10 PM. AIBU to think that this is just the world now, and that people think it's just ok to put dogs outside to bark all day?

OP posts:

It’s not the norm where I live.

BUT there are more dogs with serious issues (nervous, SA, reactive) post-lockdown because of poor socialisation etc. and that leads to excessive barking.

There are also more people who got dogs during lockdown/just after, who chronically under exercise and under stimulate their dogs which manifests in bad behaviour including barking.

ItsSerious · 17/05/2024 14:21

There are way too many dogs with seriously selfish and inconsiderate humans! YANBU!

Bad for the dogs, bad for humans to have to listen to them all the time, bad for the environment.

Pastryface · 17/05/2024 14:24

Is certainly the norm where I live. I don't think my neighbours even realise they can train their dogs not to bark so much.

AmiShitsaline · 17/05/2024 14:27

Yes fucks me right off

buffyslayer · 17/05/2024 14:30

Yep. One here, small dog that yaps all day
I've shoved notes through the door etc
Never seen it be walked ever

Blueeyes13 · 17/05/2024 14:33

We got a puppy just before they announced lockdown, we didn't know lockdown was on its way and had decided to get a dog. So, yes, she missed out on lots of crucial socialising and because we were at home , she also now has separation anxiety. It's been really hard, and despite our best efforts at training, behaviour classes, etc she still barks a lot and hates people in our house. We are continuing to train her, but I think she missed out on so much at a crucial time, that I'm not sure she will get much better. Our vet says that she sees lots of dogs like this and it's been very hard on the dogs and the owners. So I am not surprised that the OP thinks there are more barking dogs around. I also don't agree that it is necessarily the owner's fault. I am trying everything to stop the barking and for her to get used to people in the house, but it is a long process.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/05/2024 14:35

As a whole I think many people's standards have got much lower when it comes to having a dog in the last 10 years.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 17/05/2024 14:38

I don't think it's the norm - my dog can be a noisy little (big) prick when he wants, but if he barks outside then he's by immediately called inside. I would have hoped that was basic manners.

hollyivy123 · 17/05/2024 16:43

Yes fed up of having to put up with other people's antisocial noisy pets. The people next door to me have two yappy howling hounds, one of them has just tried to poo on my front lawn until I shouted at it to get off. I don't see the pleasure of owning them at all. No one care's about your dog even if you do worship the grounds its paws tread on

The same can be said about children I guess.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/05/2024 16:53

I've never had a neighbours child poo outside my house.

Coshei · 17/05/2024 16:54

I’m not sure if it’s the new norm, but there are definitely more “anxious“ dogs. I have no doubt that some of this is related to lockdown and socialisation delay but it cannot be denied that a lot of this comes from the owners, be it mental health or simple lack of care and training.

angelcake20 · 17/05/2024 16:58

Yep, drives me up the wall. There are at least three near us that routinely bark in the garden, often from very early in the morning. The gardens are essentially between two rows of terraces so it echos a lot as well. Our next door neighbour's dog howls when left alone but we won't complain as we don't want it on the record when we can finally afford to move away from them.

Children can be taught not to make noise. My child has never bothered any neighbours. He has also thankfully never pooed on anyone else's lawn.

BeaumisterandLeary · 17/05/2024 17:02

Two neighbours have noisy dogs but both are working with a behaviourist to try to sort it.

Minniemooose · 17/05/2024 17:09

You’re not wrong OP. It’s the same here, yap yap yap. Folk are selfish and lazy. Take it out for a walk instead of it barking and howling all day in the garden. Gets on my wick too. The owners see their dogs as part of their family and think everyone feels the same…. No it’s a dog, not a fucking human! It’s when owners try and compare to kids making a noise…. Errr no!
There’s no excuse in excessive barking at silly o’clock.

It’s the same as the trend of dogs being allowed it pubs, restaurants and shops. Talk about unhygienic 🤢

Ereyraa · 17/05/2024 17:11

It really shouldn’t be.

But the proliferation of cocker/malti/cavapoo dogs in lockdown means there’s so many more yappy mutts which don’t seem to be trained at all.

AgentProvocateur · 17/05/2024 17:12

Yes, people are inconsiderate and selfish. If you’ve got a barking dog, move to somewhere with no neighbours.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/05/2024 17:12

I don't care if it makes me uptight, not a fan of dogs in cafes and restaurants. Don't mind the odd quirky dogs allowed established but not dogs allowed bloody everywhere.

coxesorangepippin · 17/05/2024 17:14

It's becoming much worse, and has done so for the last ten years

It definitely doesn’t make your uptight - you’re absolutely right. It’s so unhygienic!

I think the difference between dogs and children is that, in the main, parents think they are parenting their children. Where there are issues it is generally lack of efficacy rather than effort.

Quite a few dog owners don't even try to train their dogs. "Small dogs bark" was a comment on a similar thread recently. Well, they don't have to bark and should be trained not to. Of course this is a huge generalisation, but it is based on what I see a lot (which is completely untrained dogs, and owners who don't have a clue).

Thighdentitycrisis · 17/05/2024 17:18

Neighbours 2 doors down have a yappy dog if it’s outside. they just seem to be oblivious. Newer mind polite notes through the door I stuck my head out of the window and shouted “Shut Up”

skyfairy · 17/05/2024 17:19

I think it is that so many more dimwits got dogs, without knowing how to care for them, during lockdown. I am now surrounded by barking dogs. They are rarely walked. They have no basic training. Their owners expect them to understand English, spoken in long sentences and using silly voices. So on the odd occasion they leave their prisons, they are a menace on the street.

frankentall · 17/05/2024 17:19

Our dog barks about once a month - and then it's a single bark, the big soft hound. Next door's yip if they are let into the garden, but only for a few minutes each day. I don't think it's normal to have dogs barking a lot.
