To give 5 star review for mediocre product

I recently purchased an item from Amazon based on the really good reviews and I’ll be honest, I’ve been really disappointed with it. It’s ok but no better than bang average and a bit of a waste of money. I just thought I was a bit unlucky as so many positive reviews.

Then yesterday I got a letter from the supplier offering Amazon credit for giving a 5 star review and that credit is 50% of the purchase price.

So do I give a 5 star review despite the product being meh and take the cash or do I think ‘no that’s not right’ knowing other buyers will be reading inaccurate reviews about a mediocre product?

YABU - don’t lie about the product it’s dishonest.

YANBU - who gives a stuff about other shoppers do the review take the money and run.

How much is the 50% lol

Lemsipper · 17/05/2024 11:13

Be the person you needed someone else to be :)

I had this, I rung up Amazon, reported it and got the seller shut down.

The product I reported was a medical gel to reduce scars, it's horrible to give people false hope for such things which is why I went full Karen mode.

Id like to think i was all moral but tbf it depends on the discount 🤣.. seriously a lot of us would. Now if the item was defective and useless thats different(id have sent it back, why didn't you send it back OP) but if it isnt defective OP its just not great for you..it might be for others.

Greenlittecat · 17/05/2024 11:27

I think it depends on the product and the discount! I wouldn't if it was baby or pet related but would for anything else!!

Catza · 17/05/2024 11:34

Pretty sure this is against amazon seller agreement. So you have three options.

  • Say no and stay quiet
  • Report the seller to Amazon
  • Take the money and leave 5 start review but stipulate that you were offered compensation for this review.
OldTinHat · 17/05/2024 11:44

I've done this before. My way of thinking was that it was an okay product but at half price it became good value.

No way😂 are they even allowed to do that? Now you know why the item had such good reviews!

Mothership4two · 17/05/2024 11:47

Report them

AgentJohnson · 17/05/2024 11:48

They are banking on you taking the money and because other people took the money, they sucked you in. Contact Amazon and put them on blast in your review.

thesugarbumfairy · 17/05/2024 11:51

Depends on the product and the price. Ive reported this to amazon before as the product was not worth 5 stars. And bribing me was not going to change that.
However ive also had offers of vouchers from companies who i would have given a 5 star review for anyway. I didnt need bribing! So i accepted it. My moral compass is shaky, but so is my bank balance.

1offnamechange · 17/05/2024 11:58

I've had this before, I think it's quite common (although obviously not great).
My item was was pretty good so I was happy to give it 5 stars but didn't write a glowing review, just a factual one. Not sure what I would have done if the item had been crap.

I think you can edit reviews so maybe post the good one (they usually ask for proof) and then edit it slightly, clarifying as someone said above for full price its not amazing but for half price it's worth 5 stars? Or post and get the money and then tell amazon playing dumb, saying you didn't realise it was dodgy until you discussed it with someone?

HugeCwtch · 17/05/2024 12:11

take the refund, and leave the review, but leave a 'paid for review' and then report to Amazon when you get the refund

HAHA! That's a nice little ethical loophole you've found yourself. I like it.

toomuchfaff · 17/05/2024 15:16

I'd reply and and for the refund, return the item, then leave the shitty review. God damn them and their underhand tactics.

Did you buy the item based on the reviews?

This sort of thing (fake reviews) really devalues the rating system. Surprised it's allowed.

I've been asked to do it before but didn't .

SamW98 · 17/05/2024 15:58

Just had a look on Amazon and there’s even more 5 star reviews.
Now I know the score it’s very dodgy as every single review is 5 stars and the comments are that it’s an amazing product when it’s absolutely mediocre

I am thinking about contacting Amazon because it’s false advertising.

IsadoraQuagmire · 17/05/2024 16:02

I wouldn't. I was offered another (free) bottle of a shampoo I'd bought from Amazon in exchange for a review, but they didn't stipulate that it had to be a 5* review or even a good review.
(I did leave a 5* review because I loved the product and was really pleased to get a second bottle free)

SamW98 · 17/05/2024 16:15

Well I’ve done the right thing and reported the seller to Amazon.

Even better they’ve given me a full refund so being honest does pay 🤣

They have also said the seller will be flagged as paid reviews so I’ll take a look later
