Why does the tooth fairy give money?

Just that, really. Why does the tooth fairy give money, and not a gift? Does anyone give a gift rather than money? How much do you give per tooth? Light hearted and cheerful post from an over thinker

Because it's hard enough to remember to give money without being organised enough to give a bloody present.

Hermittrismegistus · 16/05/2024 22:20

It's easier to put a coin under the pillow than a Barbie doll.

Choice4567 · 16/05/2024 22:21

because you can’t plan when the tooth will come out. It usually happens at 7pm as they go to bed! So it’s more likely that there’ll be some loose change in the house than a suitable present

ZipZapZoom · 16/05/2024 22:22

I'm sure I picked up somewhere that it was because teeth used to be seen as good luck so children used to be paid for them by adults going off to fight. Think it was a Norse tradition?

Although as children we were told she paid us for nice teeth so it was a good way of convincing children to keep them clean.

Letsbuildazoo · 16/05/2024 22:23

So you can buy sweets to make the rest of your teeth fall out. It's an investment for the tooth fairy.

Maryamlouise · 16/05/2024 22:26

It is a bit weird, not sure how we explained the first one but now it is happily accepted. We give £1 though have been informed that the tooth fairy gives more at school friends houses!

Curioustoknow1 · 16/05/2024 22:30

Our tooth fairy always gave £10 per tooth, wrote a letter & left a small charm relating to teeth- sometimes it would be a small charm in the shape of a tooth brush, a tooth, coin, tooth paste etc, but was always well received 😀

I want your tooth fairy! £10? I’d knock a few of my own teeth out for that.

Ponderingwindow · 16/05/2024 22:35

Money is cheaper and easier.

our dd decided the tooth fairy brought gold coins. She then lost her first tooth super early and we had to scramble to find one. They aren’t common in our country, but we do have some that are a very small denomination. After that we bought a mouthful worth and kept them in a drawer.

Hairspray123 · 16/05/2024 22:38

Our first ever tooth fairy visit gave a £20 note. Very generous, it wasnt at ll beacuse we didnt have any cash or change and had to take it from their money box and so it was that or nothing!

Tooth fairy gives €2 here then on the final ones a fiver (I don’t think she knows which one is the last one😅)

KrisAkabusi · 16/05/2024 22:52

Ours left €2 per tooth. It seems to be average round here. A couple of kids got a fiver, but that was considered very unusual.

reenlakm · 16/05/2024 22:54

Because she is paying for the tooth. She uses them to build her castle.

Edited to add - the going rate round here is £1 a tooth

Agree!
I had to have a tooth removed recently, but the bastard dentist charged ME £140. Tooth fairy conspicuously absent that night

Eeewww!

sashh · 17/05/2024 04:44

The fairies make fairy dust out of milk teeth, so they pay for them. They are not thieves.

This!
Although when my kids lost their teeth she was paying £2 per tooth, maybe there are more kids losing teeth so the cost per 'brick' has come down!

wickerlady · 17/05/2024 06:22

Cause a coin is the perfect size for her to carry!

Pippa12 · 17/05/2024 06:27

Where I’m from the tooth fairy also uses them to build a castle, so she ‘pays’ for good teeth!

It’s £1 round here tho. It was a couple of € one late night after an unexpected incident- my lad was very confused! We had to tell him she knew he was going on holiday (in 4 months 😂)

OmuraWhale · 17/05/2024 06:28

Don't set a precedent for giving a gift OP! You'll be scrabbling around looking for something acceptable at 11pm a few months from now!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/05/2024 06:33

Our tooth fairy gives £1 or £2 the next night if she forgets. Because we have cats, our teeth have to be wrapped in tissue and left on the shelf and not under pillows. It’s the rules 🤷‍♀️

Why?

VestibuleVirgin · 17/05/2024 07:22

reenlakm · 17/05/2024 07:19

Why?

Keeping teeth!
And building a castle with them. Altho' if you're struggling to get on the property ladder...

AhBiscuits · 17/05/2024 07:23

My kids get a £2 coin per tooth. They asked why their cousins get £5. It's because they live in London, London weighting.
