Anyone else's child find this paper really tough today? I've got to send her out again. Tomorrow for 2 more exams feeling gutted that she feels like she messed up on one of her strongest subjects.

Aibu to think this is just torture for our kids? What does it actually prove? Why didn't they change it when they had the chance (after COVID?).

Was that maths? Mine did OCR. I’m sorry, hopefully if it was really tough grade boundaries will be lower. It’s a horrible time, so much content to learn i feel so sorry for them.

There’s a chat on this in Secondary School and the consensus seems to be that it was really hard

I was invigilating today. We can't look at the papers but I didn't notice any difference in our students. No apparent struggling or issues, no apparent shortage of time. It was no calculators which makes things a bit trickier but I think I gave out three rubbers, 80 or so students in the room I was in, half higher, half foundation.

Hopefully she is feeling it was harder than it was rather than actually being hard for her (like I say, I couldn't look at the questions) Hope she did well - good luck with the rest!

Mine is doing Edexcel maths higher paper and said it was OK - but he should get an 8 so I’m taking OK to mean it was harder than he expected as he usually means Ok in a negative way - if that makes sense. If it was easy he would have said so.

What would they change it to then? Teacher assessments are too open to corruption and subjectivity.

Examexsham · 16/05/2024 21:30

Some coursework? Take 1/3 or 1/2 of the papers at the end of year 10? Continual assessment?

My daughter said Q1-Q17 were easy, but Q18 was 'astronomically hard'

So hard that there are even memes about it already 'Karim and his jars'

For reference DD was is a level 8/9 student so for her to say it was astronomically hard it must have been awful

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 16/05/2024 21:38

This was an actual question

Some coursework? Take 1/3 or 1/2 of the papers at the end of year 10? Continual assessment?

And some teachers were found either helping with that coursework or actually doing the coursework including things like art. As for taking exams at the end of year 10 some children only really get to grips with some subjects by the time they have done 2 years of it. Look, it isn't a fair system, it never has been but if everyone found it hard then the grade curve will accommodate that.

As I have said on here before, there are parents who have paid for private tutors, parents who spend tens of thousands of pounds a year on private schools, all the children can do is their best.

I want to say the answer is 24. I haven't done any calculations, I just feel that 24 looks right with what is in front of me. I do work with numbers all day and my spidey senses are great within my role but this has stressed me out! Poor kids!
