Anyone had a horizontal wisdom tooth out?

toothache23 · 16/05/2024 17:12

How bad was it? Dentist has advised that I get it removed as it's becoming decayed. But he also mentioned it's a big procedure and wouldn't usually do it unless absolutely necessary. I'm shitting myself because a) it sounds awful and b) I'm worried about infection and other issues in the time it will take to be referred to the hospital and get a date - which be advised will likely be ages.
It's not causing me pain (yet) which he said was a good sign but I'm really worried.

I did and I had to have the molar out next to it too as the roots were entangled and the horizontal wisdom tooth had fractured that molar too. I actually had it done in my dentists surgery under local anaesthetic plus sedation and it all went well. The recovery wasn't much fun for about 3 days as I had a fair few stitches in so my face was swollen and sore but it was manageable with prescription painkillers. It healed well and I had no problems since.
I hope yours goes smoothly.

ticktock19 · 16/05/2024 17:23

Meant to add, my wisdom tooth was still fairly deep under my gum but gradually moving along hence why I had to have it removed, I had the stitches as they had to cut into my gum.
I've had the rest of my wisdom teeth out too but just under a local anaesthetic

fancyfrogs · 16/05/2024 17:24

Yes, 2. A few months ago and was referred to dental hospital for it done, where I had sedation. It was absolutely fine. All dissolvable stitches and no issues with healing, maybe 3 or 4 days of paracetamol and ibuprofen but mainly just for discomfort rather than pain. It was a lot better than I was expecting

Isitisit · 16/05/2024 17:25

I did. They removed it and the wisdom toothe above it. It was pretty swollen and painful and then I developed dry socket but after a couple weeks I was back to normal.

toothache23 · 16/05/2024 17:27

Thanks for the replies. Can I ask how long referral took? I think it's probably going to be a hospital job but not certain until I have an x ray which I'm planning on doing early next week.

Yes. Had it removed under local anaesthetic at the hospital clinic as it was a 6 week wait instead of 8 months for a general. I'm normally fine at the dentist with any procedure. Wish I had waited for the general... 30 minutes of solid drilling as they split the tooth into sections to remove. I will never have that done under a local again (got another horizontally impacted wisdom tooth but that one's still ok).

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 16/05/2024 17:28

A max-fax surgeon took mine out as the dentist was worried about its proximity to a nerve.

FraterculaArctica · 16/05/2024 17:29

I have. I can't honestly remember much about the procedure itself, it was under sedation I think. It did get infected and I had antibiotics but all healed well.after that.

I wish I had had it done much earlier, I had always been told it wasn't a problem but then it led to decay on the adjacent molar because I couldn't get in to clean. I nearly had to lose that molar too... had to have root canal surgery to try and save it...that WAS unpleasant!10 years on so far so good but they said it wouldn't last for ever and it will cause a big gap when I lose that molar too.

So moral of the story I would go for it as soon as you can!

toothache23 · 16/05/2024 17:37

As silly as it sounds we have an abroad holiday booked for July and I'm worried that it will either flare up with infection/pain while we are out of the country or (if by some miracle) I get it done before, there'll be complications with recovery.
The tooth itself is definitely going black/discoloured on one side so I know it has to come out. But I'm so worried. And I'm also worried about infection in the meantime.

All 4 of mine were growing sideways, I was amazed to see the x rays because they weren't causing a lot of pain.
I had them out under GA and was fine.

pashmina696 · 16/05/2024 17:41

Yes I had one out in hospital under GA - I went on a hen weekend later that same week - painkillers for a few days but all fine.

WeightoftheWorld · 16/05/2024 17:42

I did. It was a fairly complicated one because it was quite close to a nerve, and it had to be drilled into three parts and each of those removed one by one rather than removed in one. Like you it was starting to decay and had started to decay the tooth next to it as well as the gap between them was too tiny for me to brush properly.

I had it out under sedation in the dental hospital and it was fine as I was barely aware of what was going on. Was surprised that the recovery for me comfortably eating solid food was a bit longer than I had anticipated, but it wasn't too bad.

I then had to go back to my dentist at a later date once recovered to get the other tooth filled.

coxesorangepippin · 16/05/2024 17:43

Yeah I had it done

It was fine

No pain afterwards, healed well.

Mercury2702 · 16/05/2024 17:44

Is it a top one or bottom? I had 3 out in hospital and they chose general as said bottom ones are more risky with being close to nerves but it was fine. My bottom one was on a side and the X-rays they took prior to that showed the other 2 still in my gums weren’t looking at though they’d come through straight either so they did it all in one go. From dentist putting in the referral to surgery day was 4 weeks

coxesorangepippin · 16/05/2024 17:45

Op, I'd get it done asap

ButterCrackers · 16/05/2024 17:45

One of my family had two wisdom teeth out that were horizontal. It was done with injected pain relief and took an hour. The teeth had to be cut into pieces to get them out. All was fine. The process was straightforward. Swelling last a few days. The stitches dissolved. Pain relief tables were recommended but not needed. It was difficult to eat for a few days due to swelling. I hope all goes well for you.

toothache23 · 16/05/2024 17:45

It's a bottom one.

I had two bottom ones out under GA in hospital. It was fine, though had a bruised and swollen face for a few days and had to keep the sockets clean for a while afterwards.

Octavia64 · 16/05/2024 21:19

Yes.

Had under local at the dentist's surgery but they got a visiting specialist in,

I don't like GA.

It was a bit tricky and painful after but no worse than a normal extraction.

No nerve damage.

pointythings · 16/05/2024 21:24

Yes, me. Was a hospital appointment under local, they literally drilled the tooth to pieces and took it out bit by bit. It wasn't pleasant and the recovery was worse than for a standard dentist extraction, so don't plan to be doing anything much for three days or so afterwards. Apart from that it all healed up well and was OK.

Rachel63 · 16/05/2024 21:27

I had a bottom horizontal wisdom tooth out that was very impacted. It was a more complex procedure due to the proximity to the nerve- I had general anesthetic at the dental hospital and the whole procedure took 30 minutes. I was very bruised and swollen but the pain was minimal- just a little warning- I had dissolvable stitches attaching the gum to the inside of my cheek which felt and looked a bit strange. No dry socket and quick healing. It took about 8 months for the referral but it's much better not worrying about the pain/ infections I was getting. Hope it goes well for you.

Thank you, and in that 8 months did yours cause you any pain or issues? Mine is discoloured/early stages of decay and I'm worried that it might flare up in the time between now and referral date.

My DD had all 4 wisdom teeth removed last September and both her bottom ones were horizontal. We were referred to a private clinic and, though it cost a fortune, she was treated fairly quickly. Op was done with light sedation, so she wasn't asleep, but she was away with the fairies and didn't care. Bit of pain the first night but healed quickly and stitches dissolved after a week.

2Old2Tango · 16/05/2024 22:00

This is just for your amusement. My DDs X-ray. You can see the bottom two are completely horizontal.

Anyone had a horizontal wisdom tooth out?
YogiLou · 16/05/2024 22:01

Yes, me
the extraction itself was fine
i Paid privately £650 as wanted sedation and nhs would not guarantee this
recovery was hideous, they snipped a nerve and I had dry socket
I’ve never known pain like it
I was taking 2 neurofen and 2 paracetamol 3 hourly and it didn’t really help
couldn’t eat anything other than yogurt
couldn’t open my mouth fully for about a month
severe pain for 3 weeks
was a hideous experience
