Caught DD vaping

CherryLimePie1 · 16/05/2024 08:34

Caught DD (17) vaping last night vaping. She says she's been doing it for a while is going to keep on vaping no matter what. I want to put a stop to it and stop her vaping. DH thinks there is nothing we can do stop her and she'll just keep vaping no matter what we say or do. Caught her vaping when I walked into her room last night, she knew I was coming in as she had asked me to bring a bottle of water up for her when I come up. DD described it as "just a vape" but I'm not happy about how laid back she is about this. What would you do? Would you just let her vape or would you try to stop her vaping? How do I stop her vaping?

She's 17, you can't stop her from vaping.

You can tell her you don't want her doing it in the house.

DH thinks we can't stop her from vaping too but I don't want her vaping.

I will tell her it can't be done in the house. Don't know how I can stop her doing it in her room as she'll just do it?

You can't stop her vaping, even if you want to. She's almost an adult.

But you can ban her from doing it in your house. If she does it anyway then enforce consequences.

needsomeadvice22 · 16/05/2024 08:43

You can't stop her, you can ban it from the house but nothing stopping her sitting outside and vaping.

Agree with this.
Have you talked to her about the dangers of vaping ? And talked about how addictive it is?- I've heard many people say giving up vaping is harder than giving up cigarettes.

I'm going to speak to her about this tonight.

I'm also going to make it clear that she can't vape in the house and they'll be consequences if she does.

This is what we had to do with DS18. Obviously we can't stop him consuming the wretched things altogether but we made it clear that we will not have them in the house (because there is then a risk that his 7yo brothers could get hold of them), and if any were found here, they will be disposed of. We have had to do this on a handful of occasions.

Fortunately he has now managed to give up of his own accord. Fingers crossed that he stays off them.

My 17 year old has started vaping.
Can't say much as a smoker myself apart from explaining the side effects to them.

However I don't smoke in my house. We sit in the garden under a little shelter.
17 year old has had many vapes snapped and thrown in the bin as that is the consequence for using it in my house.
They are at college and have a part time job (6hrs on a sat) for extra pennies. I can't and don't dictate how they spend that money it's theirs they earned it.

Even if they paid rent they wouldn't smoke/vape in the house as its not fair on the young siblings.

Muffin101 · 16/05/2024 09:14

You can’t stop her really, she isn’t really a child anymore, but I would be laying down the law about vaping in the house. That’s not really on.

Ontarioontario · 16/05/2024 11:10

She is underage…how is she buying them ? What money is she using to buy them? If you are not smokers or vapers yourself then you have every right to say not in your home and give some form of consequence. Even if it cuts down her opportunities to vape it will help, nicotine is so addictive people usually struggle to come off them.

You can’t stop her!! My 17yo DD is the same - and all her friends vape too!! The only thing we say is she doesn’t do it in the house!! And that she buys them from the registered vape shops as apparently the ones with 4000/6000 puffs in them are not registered in the UK.

If you remove it she will just get another one!

ivedonejuryservice · 19/05/2024 11:31

My kids would be under the patio by now if I caught them smoking or vaping! & they blooming know it.

I’d be in every vape shop in town pointing out they’ve sold underage. LOUDLY & telling the police.

Infinity234 · 19/05/2024 11:32

You can’t stop her, the more you go on about it the more she’ll do it I’m afraid!

Emmz1510 · 19/05/2024 11:59

There’s probably nothing you can do to stop her but you can certainly make it difficult and enforce rules and boundaries.
No vaping in the house.
No vaping on or near the property at all, so that includes the garden.
No vaping around you or anyone else in the family.
No vaping in the car.
Any vaping paraphernalia left lying around anywhere but in her room will be binned.
Unless she is earning her own money, nor will you be funding her vaping.
At the end of the day if feels she is old enough and mature enough to vape but doesn’t like your rules, then she’s old enough and mature enough to live somewhere else.

TheaBrandt · 19/05/2024 12:04

I’vedone how old are your kids out of interest?

Thisisreallyweird · 19/05/2024 12:11

I would really talk about health.
does she know what she is really breathing?
does she know that vaping was creating as a way to actually stop smocking?
doesn’t she care of the fact that she might be breathing substances that at best they will give her wrinkles and yellow teeth when she is in her thirties and mesothelioma in her 50s?

Where does she get the money? Does she work?

Investinmyself · 19/05/2024 12:37

Mine’s 18 and I wouldn’t like it. I’d be clear not in the house. Money wise are you being too generous if she can waste her pt job money on vapes. Cut back what you give her. If you know where us selling to her underage I’d report to trading standards. Shops that sell underage often sell illegal vapes so extra health worries, fire risk too.

DecoratingDiva · 19/05/2024 12:42

Sadly you can’t stop her doing it, all you can do is stop her doing it in the house by enforcing whatever consequences you decide are appropriate.

If you know where she is buying them you could report the shop to trading standards for selling to underage people but she will no doubt just buy from elsewhere.

SadJaneGrey · 19/05/2024 14:31

She wouldn’t be allowed to vape in house/garden etc.
It’s endemic in the young people around here. Vape shops everywhere. It’s definitely not been used by YP to stop smoking.
I’ve told my children that if they start vaping or smoking that as they are old enough they can move out.

Anonymous2025 · 19/05/2024 14:33

You can’t stop her but if you finance anything she has you can cut that . You f it was me no money for absolutely anything , food , mobile , clothes . I would buy her stuff myself but she would have no access to money .

commonground · 19/05/2024 14:45

Yes, I concur. Vaping is endemic and very difficult to police, but I do think there's a middle ground between 'yeah cool' and 'oh the horror'.

I think it's important for teens to know they are accountable to someone, just so they can check themselves occasionally and be reminded that someone is looking out for them. And actually, to listen to your views also.

So that would be my approach. You want to vape? More fool you, but I'm not going to make it easy for you (will keep reminding you of the harm to health and environment, won't allow it in the house, won't give you extra pocket money if you choose to spend it on vapes etc...)
