Which job would you take??

Hi, I could do with some opinions as I’m going round in circles and can’t decide.

I have recently been going through a terrible time. Stress at work led to illness and I’ve since found out I may have a long term disability (it doesn’t affect my ability to work but does affect day to day activities). My company’s response was to tell me they were putting me through a process (all very vague related to my illness) and threaten me with being fired. When I pushed back my LM started to bully me horribly. Anyway, I’ve gone from being really confident and doing great in my job to my confidence being rock bottom in just a few months! The whole thing has really shaken me.

My MH is not good currently (extremely anxious, trouble sleeping and feeling terrible) and having gone from what I thought was a very secure job to this, I’m so worried about job security in the future.

I have decided to leave and have been applying for roles like mad. I now have two offers to consider. Both similar salaries and benefits.

The first is for a company that is similar to my current one, but the department is smaller and my colleagues would be less experienced. I currently do billed work and I’m starting to think I’m getting a bit sick of it - this role would also be billable work. However, the work is so similar to what I do now that I could just step in to it with no problems (hopefully). My partner thinks I’ll be bored after 6 months and keeps pointing out that there’s no guarantee it will be stress free.

The second is a great company that I have some experience with. The people and culture seem lovely but the role is a step up. Not billable work but managing companies who bill like my current company (sorry if this is confusing, I’m trying to not reveal too much). It uses a lot of my current experience but there’s a lot to learn. I tried to make it really clear in the interviews that I have some experience in this other area but it was a while ago and there’s a lot I need to pick up- (and it’s a very technical role)- I’m not sure they really took this in (despite me repeating this). I was told I must be an expert with my previous experience. They did say there would be opportunities to learn but said I would need to start answering queries within my first couple of weeks as they were building up.

I would have three months of not working before starting so some time to read up beforehand.

I don’t know what to do. I have children and earn a good salary and had thought I had reached a point where I was content and wasn’t too worried about promotions and working my way up the ladder but this second job has caught my eye but I’m so worried in case I’m a disappointment and get fired (I would be devastated). My MH is awful right now and I think if I take the first I’ll feel like I’m settling and have turned down a great role (although I’ll still be well paid) but if I take the second the panic will set in. I have to make a decision in the next week.

What would you do?

Firstly bloody well done for being offered 2 jobs! You are obviously quality.
Go for the 2nd one. Good luck!

The second role sounds like it has quite a lot more responsibility than the first, so I'm a bit surprised it doesn't come with a higher salary? For that reason I'd be tempted to take the first. Unless maybe there is better potential for progression with the second?

Greenergrass40 · 16/05/2024 09:47

@heldinadream thank you- my LM has gone to significant efforts to tell me how crap I am at everything so that’s nice to hear.

@OmuraWhale the second is more responsibility but less of the actual work (more managing, problem solving etc but none of the slog of doing the work involved in the other job). I’ve previously done a very similar role although I was at the start of my career then and so mentored through the extra work that I mentioned I’d need to get up to speed on.

The salaries are similar because I’m pretty much at the top of the range for my role.

I’m wondering if I should have asked more questions during the interviews re. How much support there would be, and really clarified that they understood what my experience was - can I go back and ask before accepting or is that a terrible idea??

I would take the second one. You will have 3 months off to rest and recover and switch over to the new way of working.

They clearly believe you are the most capable applicant, which is why they have offered it to you. If they thought you couldn't do it, it would have gone to someone else. You can always leave and look for a more scaled down role if it truly isn't a good fit, but I imagine it would be harder to find a similar role if you took the other, settled, and then decided you were bored in 6 months.

2nd job

OmuraWhale · 16/05/2024 10:41

Don't go back and clarify that they understand what your experience is! They clearly think you're good enough for the role, and you were honest in the interview. Have confidence in yourself OP!

@mindutopia thank you . I guess I’m worried about messing it up and getting fired and the impact on my career from that. I’ve worked with countless incompetent people over the last 15 years of my career and have never seen any of them fired but after my recent experience i’m wondering if I’ve been a bit naive or if companies are more trigger happy now about getting rid of people.
