My 2.9 year old doesn’t have enough toys?

I recently visited a friends and the house was full of toys in every room. It was a bit too much for me but I left feeling guilty my son didn’t have half the toys.
He has

  • A bus
  • A Police car
  • 3 dinosaurs
  • A wooden puzzle
  • Books
  • Crayons and colouring books
  • Tonies box
  • Building blocks
  • Handful of teddies
  • Garden digger and ride on car

Am I going crazy?
It’s his birthday in a couple months and haven’t a clue what else to buy him. FTM mum here so clearly got too much time on my hands !

I'd love a minimal amount of toys but with a big extended family it's been impossible to achieve, and alas I have a home full of plastic tat.

Play dough would be my suggestion though, it's one of the few things my son will actually sit and do for a while.

Too many toys can be overwhelming at that age. Better to have just enough well loved things to rotate and keep it interesting and fresh.

Cantrushart · 15/05/2024 23:37

Add a cardboard box, wooden spoons and pans, some playdough, paper and crayons, and a puddle and he'll be fine.

Agree with train set
Those village/Town Map rugs can be a great addition too

Absolutely get him some of the great ideas suggested here, but please don’t worry that he hasn’t got enough. Most children I know have way too many toys so that they are overwhelmed and constantly distracted. Fewer toys will stimulate more imagination and play with non-toy things. He’ll be fine.

That's really lovely . . . such a broad selection. Schleich animals have been very popular here . . . I'm sure your DS will have good fun with them

We love puzzles of all sorts and I think they're really good for developing a lot of skills

So lovely to see an OP who has taken on board what all the PP's have said and has ended up with such a happy outcome

Ah this is so lovely to read OP, bless you.
Enjoy your darling boy and stop worrying you are his BEST Mummy!

Magnatiles, wooden train set, marble run, foam bat and ball, animal figurines, duplo, play kitchen/mud kitchen are all things I'd consider staples for that age. His toys do seem really very limited.

Have you seen the OP's recent update? She's bought some more toys which her DS is delighted with . . . .

I have also found food coloring fun to last for both around here- we create new colours, colour fake snow (buy from Amazon and hide the animals in it than we ‘rescue’ them) etc

My son is definitely happiest in the garden barefoot digging mud and collecting sticks haha We are renting so I can’t go mad in the garden but I will look into second hand garden bits

Have a look at mud kitchens or on Pinterest for DIY mud kitchen - all you really need to a bit of old furniture or a bench to put a washing up bowl on and some old kitchen utensil/metal tea pots from a pass on sites or if you’re near an IKEA their kids kitchen toys are really good.
