Has definitely gone out of the window. Sick of seeing customers shouting, being rude and abusive towards shop staff!

These heartless people have no idea that their behaviour is making staff leave. They are bullying. She was bullied at school and same horrible feelings inside. More needs to be done to make people understand that good manners matter.

Retailers are not replacing staff as one of my friends works in retail and she has been told that her store she works at needs to lose 250 hours a month. So that’s 2-3 members of staff for a medium sized supermarket! Staff are asked if they want unpaid leave. Not everyone can afford to lose £66-72 through not working a shift. Based on 6 hour shift. My friend and her colleagues haven’t got the heart to say to whinging customers who say “why not get more staff?” to say they need to lose about 60-65 hours a week!

Many shops are struggling with staff shortages and being abusive towards the stressed, overworked, unloved employees is not the answer. Especially now for the next 4 months, more staff on holiday going on that well deserved holiday or/and time away from moaning customers.

It doesn’t help when management say oh we have someone from HQ visiting and all go round like headless chickens making the shop look presentable. It’s very much like when OFSTED inspectors visit schools. Those higher up in the retailer hierarchy should turn up on spec to see what ACTUALLY happens and the state of the staff.

What do you think needs to be done to combat rude behaviour from customers? It’s a mix of retailers thinking about profits over employees’ MH and wellbeing. If shops and supermarkets have enough staff to manage, customers would still be rude and abusive.

Think tougher sanctions for customers who are abusive towards staff is one thing. Ban them from the shop and if they visit other shops and get banned for being rude. Tough if they have to go to a town ten miles away to buy groceries. If they don’t have a car, tough shit! These customers have no one else to blame for this, but themselves.

Treat others as you want to be treated yourself. So it’s fine to treat staff like shit? That isn’t needed.

My friend wants customers to complain to head office and not with the store staff as they can’t register these complaints.
