Sorry for the long one I don’t want to drip feed :)
DD 17m has been unwell for the past 5 days with some sort of viral infection her temperature finally broke yesterday morning but she’s still poorly and refusing most fluid. She usually only drinks milk and water but has been refusing water completely and is drinking maybe 200ml of milk throughout the day. We have tried milkshake, squash, fruit juice (diluted and undiluted) ice lollies and yoghurt but DD is probably having 400ml max total fluid a day. We are at our wits end today I’ve got some jelly setting in the fridge and I’m hoping she will eat some. She’s had about 150ml of milk so far and a couple sips of juice :/ she has had a couple of sips of my lucozade sport orange by accident and wanted more when I took it away but very hesitant to let her have anymore. Any advice would be much appreciated and AIBU to think she shouldn’t have any more lucozade DH thinks I should let her

God, give her the lucozade, honestly.

It's important to get any fluids into her when she's been so poorly.

I'm sure she will go back to milk and water after she's perked up a bit, in case you're worrying about starting something.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

Also, get her some ice lollies or ice pops. (In a flavour she fancies) You can get ones made of real fruit juice. (Or make your own- we do with pure apple or orange juice)

Edited to add about ice lolly flavours.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/05/2024 15:06

I'd let her have the lucozade tbh. My mum used to make us drink lucozade when we were sick and a) it hasn't harmed me, and b) I now hate lucozade, so all good.

YouStupidPoptart · 15/05/2024 15:07

Give her the bloody lucozade, why on Earth would you take it away? Why can you have it but not her?
Baffling.

takealettermsjones · 15/05/2024 15:07

Put some diluted squash in the lucozade bottle, see if she'll go for that.

Will she have fruit? Oranges, grapes, melon etc. Soups for meals.

Caterina99 · 15/05/2024 15:08

I’m on team give her some lucozade

gamerchick · 15/05/2024 15:09

Let her have it.

Pupupthenight · 15/05/2024 15:09

Your daughter is dehydrated and you took the lucozade away! Shocked you've posted this.

Prawncow · 15/05/2024 15:10

Team lucozade here.

fieldsofbutterflies · 15/05/2024 15:10

Why won't you let her have the Lucozade?

midgetastic · 15/05/2024 15:11

Lucozade sport may be quite bad for babies / children - I think it's not quite the thing we had as kids

Try and find ordinary lucozade or something similar

mrsbyers · 15/05/2024 15:12

I’d put some diahoralite or pedialyte in with the lucozade and give her it but tell her to sip it

OneAtATime · 15/05/2024 15:12

I’d probably steer away from lucozade. Will she have fruit - watermelon?

Pupupthenight · 15/05/2024 15:14

Don't do this. Lucozade sport already has electrolytes in. It's either or, not both together.

No. Don’t do this. Dioralyte or lucozade sport. They’re both good for rehydrating. If you added dioralyte to the lucozade it would be too concentrated for a toddler.

Evolutionarygoals · 15/05/2024 15:17

We recently took DD (4 years old) to a and e as she couldn't keep liquids down. Once they'd rehydrated her with some sweet liquid they gave her apple juice. Might feel a bit healthier than the lucozade? But yes, the general message was whatever liquids we could get into her was good. The nurse said we should aim for 20ml every 20 minutes. Went for some drinks of diluted Apple juice and some just water. Hope your DD picks up soon!

Lucozade themselves say it's not unsafe for children, just that it's not designed for them.

@RainbowZebraWarrior we have tried the ice lolly trick unfortunately it seems she only likes those on holiday 🙄 my only worry with the lucozade was that it would do more harm than good I didn’t want to go ahead if it would make things worse a lot of my mum friends have older children and then said they did at 3+ bur not before then. Thanks for your advice xx

Excited101 · 15/05/2024 15:19

Keep offering water, fruit, ice lollies (lots of the kids ones are quite fruit juice based). If you offer anything different like lucozade then don’t give it to her in her usual cups, keep it different. Any liquid is better than no liquid but there’s lots of other things to try first. Try fancy straws and drinking in front of a mirror first.

Mumma1822 · 15/05/2024 15:21

@Evolutionarygoals thank you for the advice. I’m sure she’ll pick up soon xx

BurbageBrook · 15/05/2024 15:21

Lucozade is a hell of a lot less harmful than dehydration! Obviously you wouldn't normally give it to a toddler but in these circumstances of course give it to her. It's a no brainer.

SatinHeart · 15/05/2024 15:21

A word of caution on the jelly, if it is sugar free dont let her eat loads on one go or the sweeteners will give her diarrhoea.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/05/2024 15:22

Let her have any fluids (except caffeine, alcohol etc) that she will take.

I can’t imagine taking a drink away from a dehydrated child, that she wanted more of, and what? Drinking it myself in front of her?

Mumma1822 · 15/05/2024 15:24

@SatinHeart thank you, it’s sweetened I can’t stand the sugar free stuff so didn’t think she would either xx

Team lucozade

Mumma1822 · 15/05/2024 15:30

Think some of the comments are unneeded I was just a little unsure if it would do more harm than good. I had a Quick Look at the ingredients and it has sweetener in I didnt want to give her diarrhoea when we are struggling to give her fluid anyway. DD is my youngest I wouldn’t be questioning it if it was for my DS as he’s abit older.
