To think a 6 day working week is a lot?

I’m contracted 37 hours but my role involves occasional Saturday working, which isn’t included in the 37 hours. Probably averages at 8-10 Saturdays a year. I absolutely love my job, so I’m generally happy to do this.

I am working this Saturday, but feeling really tired and in need of some down time this week and not even halfway through it yet!

We are able to claim time back in lieu, but not until after we have worked the Saturday. This means that there are weeks where I will work 6 long days Mon-Sat, have Sunday only off, and then work-related commitments on that Monday mean I might not get to take the day off until Wednesday or Thursday. That will be the case this week and next. I just find on that one Sunday that I can’t catch up with everything and do everything I need to do, never mind want to do.

Aibu to think that’s quite intense?

I work Saturdays in mine but we get the time back
So I work half a day in the week then half a day Saturday. Still makes for a long week though as like you say you've got Sunday then it's Monday again!

That’s frustrating. It’s not the same, just having Sunday, as it’s still 6 of your days out of 7 taken by work

Doesn't sound intense 8-10 times out of 52 to be fair. And you get your time back.

mitogoshi · 14/05/2024 20:58

I've worked 13 days on the trot at times, busy time of year! As much as it's not fun it's part of the job and you get the time back, people used to work 6 days routinely years ago and still do in other countries.

Celticliving · 14/05/2024 21:09

I work 6 days a week. But I'm in church ministry.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 14/05/2024 21:11

I think you sound a bit dramatic. It's about 15% of your weeks and you can take the day back the following week so equally you could have a long weekend 15% of your weeks too.

Jifmicroliquid · 14/05/2024 21:13

I work 6 days most weeks as I’m self employed. I usually try and take a 2 day weekend every couple of months. It’s exhausting.

curlysue1991 · 14/05/2024 21:14

I'm currently on day 8 and working straight through till next week at some stage, I wish I had a high paying classy job but it's just shitty retail manager 😭😂😂😂

Comedycook · 14/05/2024 21:15

It's a lot. One day off in a week sounds really limiting

Thank you! Was beginning to think I was lazy from the other comments

My brother works 12 on, 2 off.

DH works a 65hr week over 6 days. Sometimes more.

Both of them are sacrificing their health.

The odd 6 day week which you claim back seems fairly tame in comparison but having watched DH struggle with work/life balance, I'd advise you to make changes if it's too much.

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 14/05/2024 21:28

It's nothing compared to a working week in my sector, but if you're not used to it I guess it could be a shock to the system and seem like a lot.

When I started my current job (6 days a week, every week). It took me a good month to settle into it. Probably longer in reality.

Mannyshy · 14/05/2024 21:30

Everyone is different, with different circumstances. I work a 40 hour week in my full time job which always ends up more like 43 hours a week, plus I work 1 night a week elsewhere too by choice, it's something I do that I enjoy so it's good for my mental health. I sometimes do a bit extra for the 2nd job too, so my normal week can be 55 hours a week. So thats why you're getting different opinions based on what people's norm is. Someone else telling you it's intense because they work 2 days a week. Circumstances play a big part.

Depends what you mean by 6 "long days". I work either "long days" which are 13 hours (if you finish on time) or "standard days" which are 9 hours.

I would find 6 of my long days a slog.

Good point. 9am-5pm is very different to 7am-830pm

GlindaGossamer · 14/05/2024 21:43

I think six days is a lot, maybe not if you're a chef or working in private equity, but that's why I don't do either of those jobs!

dcsp · 08/06/2024 01:13

Personally I wouldn't find the occasional extra-long week too terrible, if I could take the time back in such a way that improved my work-life-balance as much as working the extra-long week hurting my work-life-balance.

For me, this could mean that I'd happily work 10 Saturdays a year but take an extra 2 whole weeks off.

I wouldn't expect the employer to give me this time off whenever I demanded, but I'd expect that across the year they'd be able to fit that in - and that it's fair that if I give them time when it suits them, they give me it back in a way that suits me - not a random midweek day off. If they didn't, I'd be job-hunting.
