To ask if anyone has found menopause just fine?

Another day another article about how I can expect my brain to fall out my ear any day now. "I forgot how to do my job!" and so forth. I'm sanguine about ageing (saggy jaw aside) but I really don't want to become wrong in the head so young. Please can you reassure me it's ok for some women??

A few hot flushes and that was about it. A non-event.

charabang · 15/05/2024 00:13

I was 50 when my periods just stopped dead after being perfectly regular. Apart from about 6 months of feeling totally exhausted I've been absolutely fine. I count myself very lucky.

NeedToChangeName · 15/05/2024 00:19

Night sweats for a few months were unpleasant. No other symptoms

skyfairy · 15/05/2024 00:48

I think 'awfulising' and medicalising the menopause is a big mistake. It's great that some women who were completely unaware are getting informed, but they are mostly being informed of the worst case scenarios. I am surprised they were ever so uninformed. It's not as if it was an unknown occurrence in the life of women. There have always been books about it in my lifetime. For the last few decades we've had the internet and a plethora of websites and many more books. I wonder if people don't go to their local library ever/any more?

If I hadn’t stopped having periods I might not have noticed I had even been through menopause.

I’d thought I would have a hard time because when I was younger I had such awful Pmt (do they still call it that?).

andyourpointiswhat · 15/05/2024 00:58

I had no problems with menopause. I think I was a bit ratty and had a few hot flushes but nothing major. Felt quite good about it until I got diagnosed with a particularly rare and aggressive form of breast cancer afterwards!

nothingsforgotten · 15/05/2024 01:05

Me, I had no issues at all. I felt hot a few times, no big deal, otherwise nothing, sailed through it.

nicslackey1 · 15/05/2024 01:05

I am one of the lucky ones and 60 now. When I was 52 I skipped two periods , had one and that was it. No sweating, memory loss or any other symptoms that I noticed. My migraines were linked to my cycle so that vastly improved as well. I know how lucky I was though.

Oh yes, I was the same. Awful PMT and wondered what I was in for, but it was a complete non event.

DiscoBeat · 15/05/2024 01:10

I think I'm probably in menopause (53 and no period for several months) but no symptoms other than that. Weirdly I had no pregnancy issues either - no morning sickness, stretch marks or breast changes. I don't know if there's a hormone connection or anything. I feel very lucky, and appreciate it's not typical.

Cannotbebothered19 · 15/05/2024 01:13

I think my menopause was aged 44-45 . Very heavy unpredictable periods ,never crossed my mind to see gp . I never had other symptoms and periods stopped by 47 . Maybe I was lucky but now wonder if HRT would have been beneficial…that ship has sailed though 🤦‍♀️

Me ! I had a Mirena coil in for years and didn’t have periods so wasn’t aware of what was happening. After a blood test showed menopause was done it was taken out and off I went. Also from a small consensus of similar aged women at work, not too bad , hot sweats mainly but no, not too bad at all.

Ive a mirena coil fitted too, and I think it’s helping. I have a little brain fog every now and then. That said, my mum didn’t suffer much through hers, so that could also be a factor.

Magpie50 · 15/05/2024 02:34

TBH it's probably one of the best things that's happened to me!
Sure, I gained hot flushes, joint pain and insomnia but HRT sorted all that out.
However I lost the fatigue ,anxiety, binge eating, mood swings, depression and 7st in weight!
Everybody I know says I'm now a completely different person and I do actually feel'normal' now. Turns out hormones just did me no favours at all!

TootsyPants · 15/05/2024 04:42

My periods became irregular, months between them then the last one came in November 21. Since then I've occasionally had hot flushes but nothing like the hell my mum described them to be.
Physically I don't feel any different apart from tiredness.

Mentally, my tolerance for idiots is much lower and I have a much shorter fuse than when I was younger.

So far, I think I've done ok.

Sheknowsaboutme · 15/05/2024 06:57

Apart from never wanting sex for the rest of my life, crying and feeling very low , so low i was thinking dark stuff, its a breeze🤨

sertraline is my new best friend. When i look in the mirror i see me! Not the meno me but the real me.

You’re not in menopause’s until 12 months without a period. Before that it’s peri. Some posters seem to be confused on this thread. You can have few symptoms until a year or two without periods when your oestrogen has dropped.

Lookwhosbackbackagain · 15/05/2024 07:34

Peri menopause caused me massive anxiety levels which are manageable now but hit me like a truck.

YeOldeTrout · 15/05/2024 07:55

Complete non event. I almost have FOMO about this even, lol. I had some mild hot flashes last year (during maybe 6 weeks?) & wanted to rush about telling folk "Wow! Something actually happened!" No HRT. Age 56.

I'm 70 in a few months. I don't think I'm confused when I said above that I barely noticed going through the menopause more than 10 years ago. But perhaps I am suffering from brain fog without realising it 🙂

Same here. I am in my 60’s.

Godesstobe · 15/05/2024 10:15

I don't doubt that some women suffer badly during the menopause, just as some suffer badly with painful periods or PMT. All I can go on is my own experience and that of friends. None of us has had any significant issues. The most common symptoms have been (totally manageable) hot flushes and/or vaginal dryness (also manageable). I did manage one woman at work who had a lot of hot flushes (which was initially very embarrassing for her) but I certainly didn't notice her suffering from brain fog. She was super good at her job and all her colleagues (male and female) were very supportive in relation to the flushes.
I do worry that there is a real danger of giving the false impression that all women are mad and incapable in their 50s because of the menopause .

BustyLee · 15/05/2024 11:27

I am in my sixties and fully expected to experience vaginal dryness because people seem to think it is an absolute given after a certain age, but it still hasn’t happened.

RenoDakota · 15/05/2024 11:36

I am 61 and had my last period at 58. Can honestly say that, apart from finding it more difficult to lose weight (bmi fluctuates between 25 and 26), I have never had symptoms of menopause. But think I am lucky to be in the minority.

There might be some unknown link here between women who have suffered from terrible PMT or endometriosis ending in a very easy menopause on this thread and maybe generally? I too was bracing myself.

Suffered from severe endometriosis, when menopause came i barely noticed it. Occasional warm flushes (which i probably wouldn't have noticed had i not been on the lookout for them, they lasted about 2mths and then nothing. Nothing at all, no HRT just a peaceful life.
