Ridiculously worried, found metal in takeaway

We’ve been regulars at local takeaway for years. Always a 5* hygiene rating and great reviews, well used by our neighbours and friends too.

Anyway, as I was nearing the end of my meal, I discovered two tiny bits of what feels like metal/wire stuck to a bit of chicken.

I feel sick with worry. I might be overreacting to feel so concerned but I’m 14 weeks pregnant with our rainbow baby and utterly terrified anything bad could happen to them because of this.

Like I say, I found it as I was finishing the meal. I have no idea if I have eaten any more of it and terrified that I might have. It does feel tiny, and not too scratchy or sharp when I hold it in my hand.

Picture attached. I don’t know what to do and can’t rationalise. What should I do?

I had the same thing in my mashed potato the last week! I saw it and didn’t eat it, but it was definitely off the scourer

AutumnLeaves333 · 13/05/2024 21:59

I think you would have noticed if you had any in your mouth, think how hard it is to eat even a tiny fish bone without feeling it in your mouth when you chew. I don’t think you could have swallowed any metal without knowing. It looks like a bit of a scourer.

This cannot be real. There is no way a functional human being can genuinely believe that metal can pass across the placenta.

Unless you stuck the metal up your vagina this will have no impact on your pregnancy

But you need to seek help for your anxiety because this pregnancy will not be easy with this kind of thinking.

Well done for being the first nasty commenter, hope you feel better. Luckily a lot of people before you were kind or scrolled past if they didn’t have anything nice to say.

OP there are whole threads on here about crazy things we did when we were pregnant, I certainly had some major panics about random things, you're not the first and won't be the last, I promise in 12 months you'll laugh. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Glad you've calmed down Smile

She just needs a bit of reassurance

Yes, but at this point in the thread, it wasn't clear how to be reassuring. Understanding what her fear is allows us to explain how her fear is unfounded

Treesarenotgreene · 13/05/2024 22:27

@Metalinmydinner I'm not the one who thinks metal can pass into the placenta..

Treesarenotgreene · 13/05/2024 22:29

Also if you wanted everyone to agree with you, be lovely and 'be kind' maybe post in pregnancy next time not aibu.

I stand by my statement that you need help

Your baby's going to be the coolest kid on the maternity ward with its little nose piercing! Wink

Careful. She might actually believe you

HappyHolidays22 · 13/05/2024 22:33

@Treesarenotgreene oh behave!

@Metalinmydinner - it’s easy to go down a rabbit hole with random worries when you’re pregnant and care so much!! Glad you have calmed down. This won’t affect anything with the baby. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

It really does look like a bit of scourer OP and they are generally made of stainless steel, and that is not toxic. A few metals like lead or mercury could be but they are not used for kitchen/food use items like that. I doubt you swallowed any but if you did it will pass through you safely and not affect the baby.

I totally empathise as I was horrendously anxious when pregnant. I once ate a bit of undercooked meat in a restaurant and OMG I freaked out for days and went to see the midwife in floods of tears. (Luckily she talked some sense into me and also did a blood test to check all was ok, probably to shut me up.) It’s out of proportion but that’s your hormones at work and I know how overwhelming it is. Sending you a big hug.

Thank you so much for your kindness and understanding. It is so very real in the moment, and you’re right probably influenced by hormones too! I’m glad your midwife could put your mind at ease - sometimes that’s all we need, isn’t it xx
