I see it on here more and more often.

My solicitor/social worker/GP/police officer/pharmacist/Housing Association/kids teacher/personal trainer are useless.

No they are not useless, they just weren't able to give you what you wanted, or what you wanted wasn't appropriate. That doesn't make them useless!

I think that once upon a time there was a greater gap between the masses and the "educated professionals" but that has become gradually smaller.
This means that years ago the average parent say, would look up to the likes of a teacher for example. They would trust their judgement in that they would consider them intelligent enough to qualify for the position, as opposed to the majority of the population.
Seeing as many people are educated to a higher level nowadays , it's more likely that you find yourself having to deal with people who appear incompetent. Not that they are necessarily, but it may give the impression of uselessness, because the reverence they were held to in the past is gone.

Yes and also you can look up a lot of information online so the expert knowledge isn't seen as something sacred.

I do think some people in the older generations still have too much reverence for doctors though. It's not because one doctor has said one thing that it is the word of God.

I understand that customer service has declined recently but I was referring more to professionals like GPs and social workers, ie, not people in a customer service role. I can kind of understand people calling customer service useless.

You are being unreasonable for being the arbiter of who is and isn't useless. In any job some people will be brilliant and some will be useless.

Mercurial123 · 13/05/2024 18:30

My mum can't get a GP appointment, and social services have been useless with regard to my dad's advanced Alzheimer's. Nobody cares. Great for you OP you haven't faced these issues.

RM2013 · 13/05/2024 18:36

There can be people who are useless in any walk of life, any job role and any profession. I’ve come across some amazing professionals and some less amazing.

I do think the generaL population is more demanding to the point of rudeness in some
cases. There is definitely more entitlement in a job which I have done for many years I am seeing this more often

I agree with the poster you were responding to about poor service, even from professionals. Only last week, I've had to make formal complaints about a solicitor who badly botched a property purchase causing a six month delay when all parties were ready to proceed, and an independent financial advisor who botched up a simple pension transfer. Both cases were pure and simple incompetence and both were incompetence of qualified/experienced professionals who both resorted to lying to cover their mistakes! Some just don't care and then lie to try to exonerate themselves!

Some of them are fucking useless, though. They're people, and people are sometimes inadequate/unpleasant/in the wrong job. If you encounter one, it's not wrong to say so. Fucking useless people in positions of trust and authority are dangerous. Gradually, we are moving past the culture of blind deference, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I agree and it's good that people are less willing to put up with shoddy service and do their own research to check things out.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/05/2024 18:40

But some people in these professions are ‘useless’. My dm died this year and frankly the contact I have had with some people has been absolutely shocking. So many people, including those working on dedicated bereavement helplines, who frankly could not give a shit about helping to resolve any queries.

Beatrixslobber · 13/05/2024 18:41

Some people are useless. I don’t like when people decide that a whole profession are useless due to a few.

I’m a nurse, we are either all angels or all awful. No in between and one bad nurse means that we are all bad.

Treesarenotgreene · 13/05/2024 18:52

I saw a post last week that said all midwives were useless and had about as much insight into birth as an aromatherapist

Mannyshy · 13/05/2024 19:19

Some people no matter what their profession are useless, and lazy. And people do complain about bad experiences much more than they compliment a good experience.

Nosleepforthismum · 13/05/2024 19:25

Working in law for a number of years I have to agree. The general public would be very quick to label any solicitor/conveyancer as “useless” if they couldn’t do what they wanted or give the answer they wanted to hear. Having said that I also had a couple of colleagues over the years that were genuinely useless so I can see both sides.

VolvoFan · 13/05/2024 19:29

I think it's the public sector, not what the profession is. Anything run by the government is always going to be bloated and highly inefficient.

SoupChicken · 13/05/2024 19:54

I don’t think it’s necessarily that people are ‘useless’ it’s that they’re overworked, fed up of rude, demanding customers with unrealistic expectations and we live in a culture where people know if they complain they’ll get what they want (discount/pushed to the front of the queue etc).

I’ve noticed over the last couple of years customers have got a lot less patient and my employer has put our targets up because they need to make more money which means we’re all working flat out so people resign and those who are left have a harder job .

hayleyrabbit · 13/05/2024 19:55

No, sorry. Some people are utterly and completely useless. It's a fact.

HcbSS · 13/05/2024 20:54

People are entitled, gobby and insufferable. And then they take to online forums to hide behind their keyboards and run people down. And it’s got worse in the last 10 years. I swear people used to be more polite.
