To think this man is stupid

  • Tradesman recomended via my local Nextdoor
  • Contacting him via his website so thought he was professional
  • On my first message I gave him my full address - my flat number starts with 7 (two digits)
  • Two days before the appt date he messaged me to ask about parking and claimed he knew where my address was and asked if my block was a new build opposite shops
  • I replied saying that is was a very old block and not oppposite to any shops. Then I sent him a photo with full view of my block taken from outside as some ppl find it tricky to find (many similar blocks on the road)
  • On the day/time of the appt, he called me from the bottom of my street asking if he was at the right place. I told him to walk up the street and my block was the last one on the road
  • He arrived and rang the entry phone. I told him the flat was on the xx floor
  • I waited a few minutes and nothing.
  • Went out my door to see if the lift was working and it was
  • Then checked my phone and there was a message “sorry I can’t go up, I get claustrophobic in lifts

Really.
From day 1 I told him my flat number which starts with a 7 and also sent him a photo of my block. Why did he not ask and clarified I was if on the ground floor if he can’t go on a lift?

Now I have to find somebody else but he wasted time and gas money. Luckliy I WFH and didn’t take time off work.

YABU - he is not stupid
YANNBU - he is stupid

I think the problem is that you are used to a particular numbering system and that doesn't apply in the UK. Some high rise blocks may incorporate the floor in the number. So 101 may be first floor, flat 1.201 second floor flat 1 etc. But others might just be, 1 2,3,4 etc and give no idea about the floor it's on. It might be best to stipulate the floor you are on. I always tell trades that I live on a 1 way street and there is residents only parking. And that I will provide a digital parking permit. Just for their info.

I am in the UK he is in the UK and the address is in the UK

My address clearly STARTS with FLAT 76 and it is what the council plus everyone elses use

If someone tells me that Flat 76 seems lije it could be ground floor, this is clearly mad

My block can be tricky to find by some people but nobody was ever surprised it was not ground floor

The reason why I said 9th floor when U answered the entry phone it is because there are two lifts. One of them for even floors and the other odd floors. Above the lifts there is a note telling people wich floor the lift serves. If I don’t tell people they have to figure out by finding the note on the side of the lift with all the floors and flats which is not hard but if you know the floor it is easier

But it doesn't say what floor it's on. My husband used to live at a flat number 206.
It was second floor, but then we moved to another street and lived at 45, which was ground floor. We last lived on a street where the houses were numbered 2-16,evens only. No odd numbers! There is no logic to how the blocks of flats are numbered. If you wanted your window sorted out, then it would be essential to say you were on the ninth floor as he might not be able to fix it from inside your flat. I'm in the UK and there really is no hard and fast rule for numbering.

Why do you call petrol Gas???

WhereAreAllTheBendyBusses · 13/05/2024 18:20

Does the block / residents look undesirable. ( I used to live in a very undesirable block) often trades people wouldn't want to leave their van with tools outside it. Maybe it was that.

Number 76 is on the ground floor in my block! I’m number 110 and I’m on the second floor. You can’t tell by a door number which floor you might be on, but yes, if you can’t get in a lift then of course it would be wise to check first!

YouStupidPoptart · 13/05/2024 18:24

On the 9th floor
and your flat starts with number 7. It’s not entirely obvious you’re on the 9th floor tbh, I’d assume 7th. He should have checked once you’d sent him the picture if he has such an issue though.

Was it King Charles?

This was I was thinking - if I thought anything other than a low floor I would say 7th.

I get that OP is frustrated but not sure why the man must be stupid

cultjarteriaky · 13/05/2024 17:40

Would you assume Flat 76 is ground floor?

I wouldn’t assume anything, it completely depends on how the apartment complex is configured. I used to live in Flat 114 and it was on the second floor because it was a long, low-storey building.

Exactly! I don’t know why it’s such a mad idea that high number flats can only be on high levels, it’s all down to the design of the building!

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 13/05/2024 19:42

Hi OP

The MN's questioning your stance about your flat number have a point

For many years I completed assmesnets in people homes, and about 80% of them were coucil/HA rented places and often on estates, tower blocks etc.

I've seen block number go to around one hundred on the ground floor and more than that the first floor via a few steps.

I do understand what you are trying to say but it is what it is.
you felt your time was wasted but the guy also wasted his time.

We all live and learn and good luck with the next repair person

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 13/05/2024 19:46

I'm not familiar with all flat numbering systems so the number itself would t mean anything to me but if you know you can't do lifts it is bonkers not to check before you set off

No but some are confused at you using American terms thinking it's cost him gas ...that thing we heat our homes.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 13/05/2024 21:47

Flat 76 could easily be on the ground floor. I’ve got a flat in city in the UK that’s a conversion of a Victorian hospital and associated buildings. All the flats are number sequentially along the road…starting at 1 and ending at 260 something. 76 could be ground, first, second or third floor. I don’t think any go above third floor though, or level 4 if you’re American ;)

the issue is not the fuel he uses in his car or the terminology

even if he came walking he wouldn’t still get in the lift and should have checked before hand when he read the word ‘flat’ and saw a picture of a high rising building

see I said flat not apartment
