Boss comes in and finishes the office milk off

I know it seems petty but I am unreasonable to get annoyed at this behaviour? We get milk delivered a couple of times week (paid for by the company). Without fail my boss will finish off the last pint making a frothy cappuccino when they arrive leaving the rest without - the amount of milk would last the rest of the office the rest of the working day. I just think its really rude when they could make an americano style one with less milk or a tea and leave some for others before someone can go to the shop. First world problems I know I should just let it go

So point it out that there is insufficient milk and increase the order?

Yes this

LostRider · 13/05/2024 10:51

Not my job, I do try to check an notify the boss, but would rather be getting on with what Im actually paid to do with a brew in hand, nor do I really want to be spending my lunch break fetching the office milk. Hopefully some hints will increase the milk order

Its not about the cost its the disorganization and a simple issue easily solved that is frustrating - brewless on a monday morning after the gorgeous weekend we've had is a little depressing! Atleast its a nice day for a walk to the shop later ! ..

I worked in a school where you had to bring on your own supplies, milk, coffee, tea bags etc. my last boss before I retired would use everyone's milk and coffee, leave dirty wet spoons in other people's jars, steal milk from the fridge and use personal mugs (and break them). All the while doing the cheeky chappy act. He is a total arse

Yes sounds familiar, its the going against social etiquette that probably winds me up too - this person also omits themselves as too busy to participate in tea rounds unlike everyone else who agrees its just as easy to make 2 cups of tea as 1 once you've boiled the kettle

@LostRider I think it's also because he is the meanest tight arse I have ever encountered! He and his wife, who is a lawyer, have very deep pockets and short arms. He never bought his department as much as a Christmas card.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/05/2024 11:14

We buy the milk and claim it back, can you not just do that when you're running low? I make myself a latte in the morning, have cereal, most of us have cereal and if the milk gets low one of us nips to the shop for more.

Does he accept teas made by others?

Why do you need to hint? Just tell whoever does the ordering that the office use up more milk than what is ordered and can they please add another couple of pints or however much you need. It's not a sensitive issues, you can just point it out.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 13/05/2024 13:36

Just thinking what I (the "boss") do in this situation.

I think it depends how desperate I am for my morning coffee to be honest!

If I'm not too bothered I just won't make a drink at all and will ask one of the admin team to go and get some milk.

If I'm desperate, I will use it up but will also ask someone to go and get some milk. If I'm in early I'll drop a text to someone to ask them to pick it up on the way in, so no-one is inconvenienced for long.

I do think it's a little rude to just use up the milk with a cappuccino, but sometimes needs must! (I do ensure the milk is topped back up at the earliest opportunity though, which isn't difficult as there's a shop under the office that sells it)

drusth · 13/05/2024 13:40

Don't the staff get annoyed having to pop downstairs to the shop for milk? I would be annoyed at the distraction from my work.

ClaudiaWankleman · 13/05/2024 13:43

I think I'd just bring my own pint of milk in. It'd last the whole week. I couldn't bring myself to get this wound up by it.

No the loo roll is finished off without telling anyone, I personally panic at my last 2 rolls at home and manage to never run out

2 rolls before panicking....you'd hate my husband....he thinks we need a whole pack in reserve....fine if a 4 or 9 pack but the one I had had 32 in it!!!

Aslong as I don't get there & realise there's none left Im fine with it haha! I've said to order more but going to try bringing my own in a non descript flask.. normal milk containers will be consumed as communal milk and falls into the same problem except more annoying having paid for it, we have been known to finish a 4 pinter in 24 hours..

It's effectively part of their job description - admin and secretarial staff answering phones, providing drinks for visitors, taking the post to the post office, etc. Not distracting them from chargeable work.

And it's twice a week, maybe 3 if it's been a busy week. A 4 pinter bought on Monday will last until Wednesday and the one bought on Wednesday lasts until the end of the week (as coincidentally most people choose to WFH on a Friday!)

Hippee · 13/05/2024 17:01

We're another school where we buy our own milk but one senior leader regularly helps himself without asking. It's annoying to have to remember to buy more (we used to manage with 2 pints a week in our department, so took it in turns to buy on a Monday - now it's often gone before Friday). And he earns more than 3x what most admin staff do.

buffyslayer · 13/05/2024 17:13

Definitely get it increased
We were going through too much so we get 16 litres a day now which works out about right

None of us get annoyed, quite glad of the distraction from work

VestibuleVirgin · 13/05/2024 17:22

Frothy cappuchino is an tautology!

PoppingTomorrow · 13/05/2024 17:41

I'll bet the boss would be astonished at the need to post and tell you to tell the person responsible for ordering to just order more milk?
Ditto loo roll.

toomuchfaff · 13/05/2024 20:14

Anyone that can look at the last half pint of milk in the fridge at 11am and think fk you all; I'm having a cappucino is a dick.

Regardless

Yes the milk order needs updating, but the boss is still a selfish prick.

Moll2020 · 13/05/2024 20:21

YADNBU - my boss is the same, our office (4 staff) take turns to buy tea, coffee, milk & biscuits). Boss rarely contributes, has to be asked then buys cheapest smallest of everything! If there are biscuits on offer, he’ll eat a whole packet , 2 biscuits shoved in mouth together!!

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 13/05/2024 20:26

paintingvenice · 13/05/2024 10:44

Asked them not to, labelled it, all sorts. But they’d just take it and when challenged would say “it’s just a splash” or just a little. By time the milk delivery arrived midway through a Monday morning I could be over half way through a 2 pint carton that should have lasted me a week.

Edited

You could, when the milk arrives, very obviously use it to fill your own carton back up. That would be completely fair.
