To think, with hindsight, showing The Neverending Story to a class of 6 year olds was a terrible idea?!

I was one of the 6 year olds in question.

The year was 1991. My teacher in primary school (infants year 1) put it on for us one day.

That shit gave me nightmares for I don’t even know how long. I worried the wolf was going to emerge from any given dark nook or cranny and try to kill me. I worried that the random statues that dotted the town where I lived were going to shoot lasers at me out of their terrifying stone eyes.

And of course, Artax… don’t even get me started on poor bloody Artax.

I haven’t watched it in a really long time so I’m sure the special effects and puppetry would look hilarious these days but still… AIBU to wonder what the fuck my teacher was thinking?!

At the end of year 3 I took my Jason and the Argonauts VHS into school. My teacher decided she could show it in a separate room, so people could leave if they found it too scary. I think that kind of agency is important.
I generally loved NES, had it on video, but for many years I would just nip into the kitchen or to the bathroom while Artax drowned. Absolutely no way would I show it to my kids now.
Interestingly, Watershipdown caused me no issues at all, but I'd had the book read to me before I saw the film. I think that must make a difference.

Six year olds are probably a bit too young to process the death of the horse.

Horrible scene.

I was up late for some reason (maybe a family bbq or similar) and ended up seeing ‘Jaws’ that was on TV that night. I wasn’t very old and was scared to put my feet to the bottom of the bed and worried about him coming up through the toilet. I knew logically that was impossible but still scared me.

I don't remember much about the Never Ending Story but the show that sticks out for me was Ghost Watch, Halloween 1992.
It was like watching The Exorcist live from London.. Aimed at children, I think they advertised it on Blue Peter! Terrifying!!

Let's all just stick with Teletubbies and flowers and rainbows 🙄

Yeah because there's nothing inbetween telletubbies and the never ending story that you could put on for a 6 year old 🙄

We watched Star Wars in year R. They offered us to watch it during a beautifully summer day and I remember looking out of the window and wishing I could go outside.

I have never watched Star Wars since. I was terrified.

My worst was being shown Threads (post nuclear war holocaust film) just before we broke up for Christmas at the age of 15. Which also happened to be on the same day that Lockerbie happened - to say it shook me up.. slight understatement :(
