Think I’ve found a lump in my breast

I think I can feel a lump and when I press down it’s very very sore. I’ve had issues with this breast for a couple of weeks with feeling itchy on surface and burning deep inside the breast. Now I’m absolutely terrified. Has anyone experienced this and it turn out not to be bad news I’m not coping

95% of lumps turns out to be harmless. Call your gp on Monday and you'll get a referral for a scan.

user1471556818 · 11/05/2024 23:46

OK deep breath .Get gp appointment ASAP and get it properly checked out .Fingers crossed its nothing sinister .
Not many people wouldn't be scared that's normal .
Please update us and wishing you all the very best

Echo what others have said about going to the GP on Monday but try not to panic Flowers I believe they fast track this type of thing so you should be seen quickly.

If you can afford it or have work medical insurance schemes, some private hospitals do breast clinics you pay and they see you quickly, they do a consultation, scan and other tests (such as needle biopsy) all there and then. I did this and i think the consultation was £250 then extra for the scan I had. I think the organisation was called Check4cancer or something. (I know this is not cheap and I was lucky to be able to claim from my work health insurance).

I know how scary it is, I was petrified when I found my lump, however as a pp said most turn out to be nothing xx

Mchorseface · 11/05/2024 23:56

I've had plenty of breast cysts - sore and painful when prodded and that in itself can be a sign that it's benign. So yes, get checked out, and as said upthread, a huge percentage turn out to be nothing to worry about. Just get an appointment made ASAP and try to tell yourself not to worry until you know what it is - not easy I know, I've had loads of cbt and it's helped massively to manage times like these, as am a bit of a worrier.

lemons44 · 11/05/2024 23:57

Sorry just to add... my lump also turned out to be a cyst.

Ev97 · 12/05/2024 00:04

Thanks everyone. I will call GP Monday. I Just feel like crying now because I’m mid 20s but my Nan had breast cancer at an earlier age. I feel like the lump doesn’t move around either. Im also a single parent and I worry loads so I’ve jumped to the worse case now I have found the lump

I found a little lump last year, GP did a referral, within half an hour of getting home from Dr, I had a call from the breast care unit to arrange an appointment for a few days later. Everyone was lovely at the clinic. I saw the consultant, had a mammogram and a CT scan and got the all clear. Some of the ladies were coming out with blood test forms and went off for biopsy but they were very much in the minority, most of us left with a relieved smile

TeenLifeMum · 12/05/2024 00:08

Cancerous lumps don’t usually have pain. I had a lump a couple of years ago and it was just a gland in the top of my breast likely related to my flu jab (body’s natural reaction). I was so sure it was cancer and so was my gp who I’ve known for years. He was very concerned. But all was fine. I also have 2 friends who did have breast cancer and both are now fine. Treatment was tricky but both cancer free within a year and one just did the London marathon this year. No need to panic (but totally understand you feeling nervous).

Amsterdamming · 12/05/2024 00:09

If its painful at all let alone really painful as you've described it won't be cancer. Very slim chance anyway. Cancerous lumps are generally not at all painful. 💐💐💐💐

dottiedodah · 12/05/2024 00:12

Ev97 I had this .our gp saw me within 2 hours.all good just a harmless cyst .I had it drained and 2 weeks of antibiotics. The worrying is the worst bit sometimes

Mothership4two · 12/05/2024 00:53

I had a benign tumour removed. Had a mammogram, then a couple of weeks later saw a consultant/had a biopsy and a few weeks later it was removed. The day I saw the consultant my aunt had a breast cyst diagnosed.

Agree with @dottiedodah the stress and worry was worst.

Like others have said, pain is generally not associated with cancerous breast lumps

The "probably not cancer if it's painful" thing needs to die.

My aggressive breast cancer (which the first GP told me was nothing) became so painful I couldn't wear a bra until my first chemotherapy infusion kicked in.

Most breast cancer lumps don't hurt, but that doesn't mean that it's not cancer if it does hurt.

2chocolateoranges · 12/05/2024 00:57

My 20 yr old dd had a lump in her arm pit , we went to the doctors who saw her quickly and had a feel and said that it’s only a tiny amount of lumps that are cancerous. They also said the fact it was painful to touch was good . Dr said it’s a sebaceous cyst and it should go away but will probably keep returning.

please don’t panic and make an appointment on Monday.

Corksoles · 12/05/2024 00:59

I've had 100s of breast lumps. Full to bursting of cysts. It's EXTREMELY likely that yours is harmless. It will be fine!

I said “don’t usually” which is the description the nhs used; it doesn’t mean never. But it is more likely to be not cancer and it’s not helpful to scare the op when she’s waiting for tests. Hopefully it isn’t but if it is then it’s not the death sentence it once was.

I can't be scaring the OP that much, after all, "it's not the death sentence it once was".

Mchorseface · 12/05/2024 08:43

@Ev97 the reality is no-one knows if your lump is something to worry about or not at this stage. As hard as it is, try to distract yourself from overthinking in any way you can, until you definitely know what your dealing with. All lumps are different, I have a massive scattering of cysts and am a frequent visitor to get them checked out - I've had to learn ways not to scare myself sick each time. Of course you're going to be worried because of your family history, I think posters on the thread are just trying to give you some comfort to know that a lump does not definitely mean cancer. Try not to waste valuable hours worrying about something that may well turn out to be benign. If it is cancer, you will deal with it and do everything you can to sensibly look after yourself to give yourself the best chance of survival. I'd really recommend looking for some CBT, it's helped me immensely to stop anxious thoughts in their tracks. Hope you can somehow find some peace today and get to enjoy this beautifully sunny day.

wateraddict · 12/05/2024 08:49

Hi OP, ask for an emergency appt and explain why you want to be seen so you get an appt quickly. My NHS trust could see me quicker than the private option and I had a mammogram just a week after my GP appt and an appt to discuss the findings a week after that. It won't be long until you know, so focus on keeping yourself distracted, discuss in real life with someone you trust. It's understandably worrying but try not to panic and be kind to yourself. I hope you have a clear answer very quickly x

Mchorseface · 12/05/2024 08:55

Yes, do explain you're a single mum and obviously your family history and that it's obviously massively worrying for you. I really hope they fit you in ASAP. And YY to RL support in the mean time - do you have anyone you can talk to about this?

Ev97 · 12/05/2024 14:07

Thank you everyone. Not really as I don’t want to worry anyone @Mchorseface we have sadly just lost my uncle to cancer so it’s a hard time and I think that’s worried me more

Oh you poor thing, that must be really difficult and worrying. Do try to tell all of this to whoever you speak to tomorrow as I'm sure they will fast track you if they can - you'd be very worthy of it. How are you feeling today?

I had a bean-sized lump in my breast when I was 33. Mammogram showed nothing as I was too young (blimey, they're painful at that age), ultrasound was done and they were satisfied it was just hard tissue

I'm almost 66 - at some point, the lump just went away!

It's natural to be scared - but the odds are massively in your favour. Just get to your GP soonest.

KLSill · 12/08/2024 15:44

Hi all, brand new here. I’m 43 and just discovered this indentation on my left breast. GP also sound a soft mobile lump at the top area of my nipple. I’ve been referred under the 2 week wait but literally terrified. Has anyone else had this? Thanks x

Think I’ve found a lump in my breast
Mchorseface · 12/08/2024 23:36

Hi @KLSill I'm so sorry you're going through this. How very scary. I do think maybe start a new thread of your own as well, as this is quite an old one. Not many people might see it and you deserve lots of support. I hope you get an appointment very soon Flowers

MidnightEagle · 19/08/2024 18:45

@KLSill I'm waiting to see the breast clinic too after finding a lump a few weeks ago. My appointment came today but it's not for another 2 weeks. Have you got an appointment yet?
