Basketball hoops in small gardens

Myneighboursandtheirfuckingbasketball · 11/05/2024 20:53

We live in a new build. Gardens are actually a decent ish size but still...new build gardens. About 30ft sq, no trees or anything yet. My fucking twatty cunty NDNs have astroturfed the entire garden and basically use it as a sports pitch. Football, hockey, tennis and motherfucking basketball. Not one but two bastarding hoops. And not one member of the family is capable of being in the garden for even 5 minutes without thwacking or thumping some kind of ball around. I hate them.

It's a lovely evening. All the other gardens are fairly quiet, you can hear people chatting, bbqing, eating, some quiet ish music.

Not in our garden oh no, thump thump fuckity thump bash. Scream, shout. Repeat. Repeat. So where am I? In the fucking house fuming because its actually impossible to enjoy being in my garden. Even my high pitched shriek over the fence of 'for fuck sake that fucking basketball' didn't even register. It will go on til about 11pm from experience. There are 4 adults out there plus multiple children. They have absolutely zero self awareness, literally do not give a shit how noisy they are.

We are actually looking to move house just to get away from them and I'm going to sell it to whoever appears to be the loudest, most irritating family.

ARGH.

Anyway. AIBU to think that my neighbours are cunts?

Welcome to new build life - its Horrific!

All sound travels so far and there are so many entitled idiots out there who wouldn’t know consideration for others if it bit them on the ass!

Aquamarine1029 · 11/05/2024 21:00

It honestly sounds like my worst nightmare. Well, one of them.

GoodVibesHere · 11/05/2024 21:10

YANBU at all. I can put up with noises - dogs barking, kids shrieking, music, lawnmowers etc but the repetitive dull thud of a basketball would drive me absolutely loopy. I bet you can't wait to move.

Silverlinning · 11/05/2024 21:28

Sounded like my garden for moment. Then I realised all of my neighbours have basket ball hoops apart from one. Don't play for hours in end either

TheAceWoman · 11/05/2024 22:08

They are putting their garden to great use. They should stop at 9 but otherwise good on them for getting outside and playing instead of looking at screens.

TheKeatingFive · 11/05/2024 22:11

We it's their garden and sounds like they're enjoying it. Much healthier for kids than screens. 🤷‍♀️

Your choices are suck it up or move.

TheKeatingFive · 11/05/2024 22:12

They should stop at 9

This is fair enough

Karensalright · 11/05/2024 22:21

oh god op you made me laugh so hard i cried.

we get on with our neighbours, but..

They have an outdoor TV played full blast hideous music all day yesterday. (Think i am a Barbie girl)

this was inter-dispersed with their sausage dog barking at me every time i moved.

Today gardening, sport TV on full wack, dog going mad.

Every now and then would tell the dog to shut up and put it in the house, only to let it back out to bark at me.

So fucking pissed off.

Told husband he has to have words with them tomorrow.

Elebag · 11/05/2024 22:27

The plastic grass makes them cunts.
I can tolerate activity noise tbh.

My ndn's DC plays basketball inside their terraced house, presumably because the garden is a tip.

LameBorzoi · 05/12/2024 07:24

It sounds annoying, and they need to stop at 9, but it sounds great for the kids. Far better than screens.

LameBorzoi · 05/12/2024 07:27

@Garyho Unless they have a sports ground close enough for the kids to walk safely on their own, "a proper sports ground" isn't an alternative.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/12/2024 07:27

Agree with PP. Were always whinging about young people being on screens (or watching too much TV a generation or so ago) but then when young people start doing something more active it's always inconvenient.

Octopies · 05/12/2024 08:48

My neighbours used to have one, stupidly position near lots of windows (both their's and my houses). They used to play with it using one of those leather footballs for some reason. One day they damaged my conservatory roof, so I calmly went over to let them know, thinking I'd at least get an apology. The dad just shrugged his shoulders at me!

Fast forward a few weeks, and I hear bounce, bounce, bounce, smash and a lot of effing and blinding from the Dad. Turns out one of the kids had smashed the wing mirror off his car playing basketball. The next day the hoop got taken down and thankfully hasn't been reinstated.

Just noticed it's a zombie thread, hopefully you have now sold your house to a suitable noisy family!

EmmaEmEmz · 05/12/2024 08:54

I have four children.

We have football goals and basketball hoop in out garden (along with bikes, slides and other outdoor play equipment except for trampoline)

They're children. They need the exercise and fresh air. They're playing in the garden that we pay for and can use how we want.

In the summer they're out 10am - 9pm and those days are lovely because they barely touching screens, and with teen and tween boys especially, that's important.

We are mindful for no unecesssrily screeching and shouting and to be careful that balls don't go over fences.

Cromwell1905 · 05/12/2024 08:57

We bought one new build meant to be our forever home, they are all too close together, no mature growth, thin walls and generally as they are so high density you will get at least one set of people that affect many others.

I have to say though the OP’s use of language may be an insight into the sort of place they live and I would imagine with this much aggression that they have addressed it with this family and would like to know what was said.

Trampolines in small front gardens on the roadside is another one. If you clearly don't have the space then just why?? I've actually seen a trampoline on a balcony in a block of flats before.

mamajong · 05/12/2024 09:33

We play sports in our garden including netball and basketball. On the flipside our neighbours have a hot tub and regularly host friends so we are as noisy as each other. I'd hope my neighbours would pop round and tell me if it was getting out of hand as I would them. I'm more chilled but dh would not react well to someone shouting passively aggressively over the fence, I doubt that will help!

I don't like trampolines (because I've seen too many injuries from them!) but why should the kids of families who have no choice to live in flats or have no space in back gardens miss out on fun and exercise?

Karensalright · 05/12/2024 13:24

@napody yep an outside TV he is not allowed to watch sport in the house

Because you'd have to be a bit thick to put a trampoline on a balcony several floors up?
