Is it wrong that they close the paddling pools etc in local parks on a hot day?

Ours was closed because of the cuts. It dosent open until the end of May and then it's reduced hours.
People were calling it for it to be opened on an and when needed basis, rather than by date?
It is sad that it's got so bad.
There's hardly any outdoor swimming Pools and splashpads now for people to enjoy.
Do you think they should open according to weather rather than the date?
👏

Yes the swimming pools are open, the paddling pools in the parks 2 out of 3 is...

Mairzydotes · 11/05/2024 17:44

No ours doesn't up til May half term . Apparently it takes a lot of maintenance and keeping clean.

Eviebeans · 11/05/2024 17:46

I’m not sure how many parks still have paddling pools in them - are you talking about places that are free to use?

Tagyoureit · 11/05/2024 17:46

So how does that work? You just have a team on stand by just incase the weather is nice?

WittiestUsernameEver · 11/05/2024 17:48

Who are they going to call in to make sure everything is working, water is chlorinated etc and staff and run them at late notice?

They tend to hire summer staff for ours on fixed contracts.

Yes. Agree, most of them are splashpads now.
Alot of people prefer the old type of pool, where you could just splash around.

We have a local lido but I don't think it opens until May half term. The weather is probably too erratic to open it beforehand.

ZipZapZoom · 11/05/2024 18:01

No our splash park is still closed despite the website saying it should have opened already, which is such a shame given all the beautiful weather this week.

CatamaranViper · 11/05/2024 18:03

We've got a free paddling pool in our park that was open today. It's not staffed but it does need setting up, cleaning and maintaining. Takes about a week to set up. The problem on hot days, especially at the weekend, is it is absolutely heaving and the bins are always overflowing so ends up quite smelly.

The splash pads in surrounding towns were mostly open too.

Splash pads are safer and more accessible

I have no idea about paddling pools, but there were plenty of people in the sea at Tynemouth today. I don't think we even reached 20 degrees here, but there are plenty of well 'ard people round here.

CountingCrones · 11/05/2024 18:25

How are they going to find staff for these ad hoc sunny days, OP? Have a zero hour contract team kicking their heels until the Met Office gives them the go ahead

With the reduction in council budgets, they just can't open facilities at short notice when the BBC Weather app says it will be nice out.

Not sure about other splash parks but ours isn't staffed. Once it's been initially cleaned and chlorinated, unlocked and turned on it all works on timers. Beyond the work to open it up no staff are needed unless someone reports an issue or until the end of the summer when they come and lock it all back up again.

Soukmyfalafel · 11/05/2024 18:31

I have one locally. I've seen guys cleaning it up because it got filled with crap over winter, but my local council was planning on closing the paddling pools due to their deficit. Maybe they were cleaning it just to avoid being sued as it was full of manky water before. My council seemed to be most keen on making cuts on things that largely affect children which is nice of them.

User1979289 · 11/05/2024 18:33

One of the biggest issues with the one local to here was people letting their dogs shit in it. They filled it in.

YouveGotAFastCar · 11/05/2024 18:46

three local paddling pools here, all open after May 24th

The problem is the initial set up for the summer season. I'm guessing that's at least half a day of unplanned labour? Maybe the councils try to do it, Welwyn Hatfield did last year when it was unseasonably warm... However, that's because I gather they're run by Better and they had staff that were available? But, it wouldn't have cost £0 to open it over the few days, and councils have tight budgets.

But the one a few villages away I think is "pure" council and I think they just have temp/summer staff run them, probably on a 3 months contract or similar.

So, whilst it's a shame, they'll all be open in a couple of weeks anyway - and they're an amazing free community resource that's accessible to pretty much every body.

If you want to take your 3 kids swimming at the local pools, it's around £5 per kid, adults have to be in water with U8 etc. adult tickets are £7+ so, you're easily looking at £25-30 odd for 45-60 mins max.

With the sprinkler parks, granny can come along and watch and paddle if she wants, you can use it as a wheelchair user, babies can have a crawl around, and older kids have a blast, no need for life vests/floatation devices etc. often their in green spaces, so you can stay longer, have picnic s, play frisbee, watch the world gonbu etc.

MotherFeministWoman · 13/05/2024 18:42

But if they can't afford it they can't afford it.

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/05/2024 18:46

No such thing as splash pools or paddling pools anywhere close to me. Closed decades ago due to "health and safety".
