To feel like yelling at neighbours

Well actually people about 4 doors down.

Its a hot sunny afternoon and i want to sit in the garden but for the last 3 hours at least they've been using some kind of machinery - I don't know what but the noise is loud and repetative and going through my head. It sounds like a mix of a very loud heartbeat intermingled with a bad tempered motor bike. It might be a jet washer I'm not sure.

I've had enough and am going to take the kids to the park for a picnic to get away from it. I can even hear it through closed windows. I just want to sit outside but can't. DD is in the middle of A level revision and has given up and gone to a friends to study as she simply can't focus with it going on.

I know people are entitled to use equipment in their own homes but even so...

^^ just realised said kids but DS is the only one here at the moment but will take him anyway!

I get it but not a lot you can do. I was wfh yesterday and day before and my ‘office’ backs onto the garden. I had to have the window open and someone was doing dyi all day. Either same noise you describe or banging. What can I do. People are entitled to do what they like in their own garden

LauderSyme · 11/05/2024 16:55

YANBU to feel like yelling at them but YWBU to actually do it.

The problem with good weather is it's a good time to get those outdoor jobs done. But I do feel your pain. Behind my back garden is someone's very large drive and in summertime they are always fixing car motors on it.

lovenotwar149 · 11/05/2024 16:55

Interesting dilemma. Do you get along with your neighbours? If you do then a conversation about it mind be ok.
I have lived in 3 different family homes, and have got along with all my neighbours. I think it "unwise" to fall out with neighbours personally.
Having said that, I am not conflict avoidant at all and have stood my ground, albeit it gracefully, when necessary. i.e.noise/rubbish/planning issues have arisen.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/05/2024 16:56

The reality of summer in the garden always surprises me every year.

I spend all winter imagining myself out there sunbathing to the sound of birdsong. In reality I live next to 4 people who can only communicate by shouting and like to spend every waking moment tinkering about with car engines.

lovenotwar149 · 11/05/2024 16:57

neighbours hey! Cant live next to them, cant live without them!!

ToxicChristmas · 11/05/2024 16:58

I can see why it's annoying, but unfortunately DIY and garden work needs doing, and sometimes it's noisy. Is there ever a good time that will suit everyone? Probably not. Too early or late you disturb someone's sleep or kids going to bed. Midday you disturb someone wanting to read or have a bbq. Weekday, you disturb someone working from home. It's part and parcel of having neighbours. Next doors bbq just smoked out my fresh washing -really annoying, but they are entitled to have a bbq, just as much as I am to use my washing line.
Hopefully tomorrow you will have a peaceful day!

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 11/05/2024 17:00

I’ve had builders converting barns next door for the last three years.
Their vehicles get turned on at 7:30am ( Monday to Saturday ) and as they pass by our entire house shakes.
Constant noise for 3 years and we are single glazed.

No offence OP but I wish it was just the occasional bit of obviously maintenance work going on like at yours.
I dream of that!

Rolson77 · 11/05/2024 17:00

People are allowed to do work in their garden. I spent an hour and a half Jet washing my patios today. They were disgusting. Unfortunately that's just life.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 11/05/2024 17:06

I have to say it’s no one else’s problem if you work from home. It’s the price you pay to be able to not have to commute.
I do like peace and quiet when I sit in my garden though.

listsandbudgets · 11/05/2024 17:08

They've stopped.. .was just about to go out with DS when blissful peace descended. Now it feels too quiet... no pleasing me is there?

Hopefully not just a tea break

I know I have to live and let live and I wouldn't really have yelled at them but my ears are still ringing. Grin

Going to eat picnic in garden instead

@Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions I'm not working from home today - it's Saturday and I had no intention of doing any work at all - too hot, too lazy.

@AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen OMG that's horrendous how have you tolerated it for so long. I'd be in a constant state of rage

Rage, stress and losing my hair tbh.
Id love to sell but it’s a tip next to us now.

listsandbudgets · 11/05/2024 17:42

It was a teabreak Sad Never mind it won't go on forever (hopefully!)

@AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen I'm not surprised you want to move - you must feel like it will never end. are they actually making progress or is it just an evil plot to drive you mad?

Deeperthantheocean · 11/05/2024 17:49

The same at the beginning of every summer, the first opportunity to do DIY outside, sort garden etc and it's always noisy. Annoying of course but to be expected, lawnmowers, children playing etc. The worst for me is those who blast their music out to festival level! Walking past a house earlier at 11am it was unbearably loud and I felt sorry for their neighbours. Really no need for it, so selfish and antisocial. Having music on is fine but at a non invasive level. Xx

dameofdilemma · 11/05/2024 18:13

Deeper - I’m with you on the music. If you’re a street away and I can still hear your music from inside my house with the windows closed - I’d hazard a guess it’s too loud.

Well, yes I think it’s an evil plot to drive us mad and yes even out.
We re the farmhouse, they want it.
They are doing it all on the cheap and seriously under budgeted thinking a 250m2 grade 2 barn could be done on £200,000. 🤣🤣. Loonies!
They haven’t even started the other one 450m2 grade 2 star barn. That one alone will cost £1.5million. They had a total budget of £200,000.

They are not allowed to move in till both are finished and are currently living in a caravan.
No one wants to buy the small one as they did the underpinning themselves on the cheap and cars can now park in front of their windows ( owner changed planning). Honestly it’s mind blowingly stupid, entitled, narcisstic behaviour. We ve called the police out 3 times due to harrassment and found out he’s recently out of jail early on licence.

We are architects and offered to help budget in the early days, they weren’t interested.

Going crazy everyday. Just pray for Sundays and bank holidays.

Will probably sell up and leave our dream house and loose half a million on it.

Life is for living and at the moment we are existing. I haven’t walked out of my house ( we share a drive) in two years. I only ever drive out as it’s safer.

OrangeCrusher · 11/05/2024 19:51

I feel your pain. Nightmare neighbours with anger, alcohol and marriage issues surround me. My nicest neighbour, two doors down, is an elderly man who is the first one out to help anyone. He fixes fences that have been blown down, catches mice, and paints anything you want, you name it, he can fix it. Unfortunately, he's out the back with Patsy Cline on full blast at the first hint of sunshine. It's driving me nuts, and I can't say anything to him. 😩

listsandbudgets · 11/05/2024 20:44

@AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen you know a lot more about building than me being an architect - but what I do know is that if I could avoid buying and renovating a listed building, I would. you have to do them to such high standards and keep so much detail it's prohibitive.

I suppose if they've not underpinned properly you could ask building regs to take a look but that may just make things worse..... I'm sure you've thought about that though.

As for the people down the road they seem to have finished and are now having a well deserved bbq on their gleaming patio. Smells delicious Smile

Glad your neighbours are done.
Yes our hse is grade 2 star 1430, so lots of work too.
Building control is farmed out these days, not council controlled or we would have reported them simply because their work could easily endanger future users. But we can’t even find out who they are using for building regs application.

Thats why so much inappropriate cladding was put on high rises (Grenfell etc ) no one takes proper control these days.

Hope your Sunday is quiet!

Itiswhysofew · 11/05/2024 21:36

I live in a village and have been hearing loud jetwashers for the last 4 days, all day long. I'm afraid noise appears when the sun shines, unfortunately😪

Scaredycat259 · 11/05/2024 21:38

my neighbour is currently hammering away near an adjacent internal wall. He first started this shit 1.25am this morning.
Dp has already been round at 7.30pm to ask how long it would go on for as 1.25am was a joke. He said an hour. Yet he's still at it.
DP has just gone round again.
I hear shouting 😬

Two doors down decided outdoor karaoke was a good idea. Me being me decided to join in and contribute to the renditions. Shame I don’t know the words or even the tunes but I do love a good warble.
karaoke was switched off after two songs. Spoil sports. :)
